It's great, I'm studying graphic design, (I'm a begginer) and in my college we do something like this but with illustrator... Now I'm in love with free software philosophy, and your videos are great cause I find an alternative to private software with something like I love who is graphic design. Pd: sorry for my English I'm not a native speaker.
I hope you find this amusing, I spent the whole weekend trying to pimp a logo, I had to stop and watch a dozen of your tutorials and voila it's done and brilliant thanks to you.
Wow Nick, I am so impressed with your tutorials! I worked on Coreldraw years ago but haven't been able to buy it again, so when I found Inkscape, i was over the moon. The fact that you make such comprehensive tutorials, creating these amazing logos and vectors, makes it even more of a pleasure - thank you thank you thank you - you have no idea how you are helping me find my creativity! Keep up the great work!!
Note that you can get a similar effect with the "Interpolate Sub-Paths" effect. You'll have to apply it for each of the pairs (the extension does that automatically), but then you can edit the path after the fact. You can even use this to make 3d wireframe figures! It's very relaxing to play with.
Amazing! Just want to say that I have been following some of your tutorials in the last couple of days and I think you're doing a great job explaining these things. I literally had no idea how to use inkscape, but the way you explained things really helped me to learn. Thank you very much.
Nice! Love this effect. If you set the colors for the lines before interpolating you can interpolate the colors too by checking "Interpolate Style"; I did three separate interpolation with just two lines selected at a time. Also, if you just do the interpolation from the paths, at that point you can still edit the stroke width, etc..
Wow youre amazing Nick. Love it. Just one question. Could you please do an Inkscape VS Adobe Illustrator video coz im starting to see no use of Ai coz inkscape is powerful! Thanks in advance
Beautiful! Thank you Nick! Also thank you for assuring me that my PC was not going to pack up and that I just had to hang in there! Your tutorials are the best!
Hi Nick, love your Inkscape and Gimp tutorials, great work. Just wondering if you could tell me something about the ideal export settings in order to use the designs for t-shirt printing. Thank you.
I know its an older video but I just found it right now. At first great Inkscape tutorials and I've never seen any better yet. And I really like this effect but is it possible to make an animation out of this lines? Like changing settings in small steps and make a sequence out of it? I really like to have a video background with this just moving instead of static. Hope I can get an answer to this.
excellent video, but could you change the dark theme? because you do not usually see which option you selected ... thanks for your high quality content
Great tutorial Nick but I face a problem in interpolating and the problem I face was it was saying an error occured while interpolating . But anyways thanks for giving me brilliant tutorials and also your explainanation is best 👍👍 Hope you will hlp me
Using Inkscape 1.0, I found that the smoothing multiplier should be about 25 instead of 65, which produced a straight line. Greetings and thank you from the future!
The first thing I wanna say is that these videos are helping me a lot. Now I want to become a graphic designer. This is a very special youtube channel, so go forward, don't give up! The second thing is that I have a question related with Inkscape, Ubuntu, and Windows. I have the same problems with Ubuntu about the programs that are available so I decide to install Windows 10. The problem is that in Ubuntu you can see the thumbnails of the svg files and treat them like images. My question is if you know how to do this using Windows. Thank you.
i have noticed that inkscape is sort of alott bether than Visio or gimp with path and setting`s for path especially like making the yellow line for road its evenly distributed but in visio its har to get same effect, only thing i notice inkscape is lacking is library of shapes like visio has or is it via add-on? :) btw great video :D
useful video ever i seen.. and one more thing is, if i save this into image or EPS , the file size will be more than 1MB atleast ? . Because when i save this i am getting file sizes less than 0.5MB.
nick.... at 4:17 when you fill in another colour - my lines turn more into an object when filled in. It doesn't just change the colour of the lines! Where did I go wrong?
when I try the freehand tool with the given smoothness and the spiro path..whenever I draw a curved line it always comes out as a straight line...every time I draw a line with many curves and I release the left click it becomes a straight line...please help pleaseeee
hey @nick , you really make great videos , simple , easy and slow for beginners . would like to ask you what is better in your opinion (gimp or inkscape) i want to learn one of them but cant decide, also would you please recommend a video editing program(beginner) and if u know a channel with some videos would be great ... thanks
It would be beneficial to learn both. If you want to learn to edit photos I would recommend learning Gimp first and then graduate to Inkscape. Some of the concepts are shared by both programs but they serve different purposes. Blender is great for video editing (among other things its capable of). Mikeycal Myers here on RUclips has some good video editing tutorials for Blender.
Comparing GIMP and Inkscape is like comparing apples to oranges. They're both graphic design applications, but they both serve different purposes. Inkscape is for creating vector graphics, and GIMP is for editing existing photos/images. It would be ideal to learn both simultaneously as they both work great in conjunction with each other.
after I run live preview in interpolate dialogue, its shown notice that "inkscape has received additional data...traceback" and fail to make multiple curve. what is the problem?
Hi Nick! I love your videos and designs a lot! But I have a problem with Inkscape. Whenever I try to use the eclipse tool, it just comes out has a few dots, no circle, just dots in a position as if there was a circle there. I was wondering if you could help. Thanks!
I've had this issue too. If your problem is the same as mine I found that hitting the "Make the shape a whole ellipse" button would solve the problem. The button is in the tools toolbar when the Ellipse is selected, and is the last one on the far right, the full circle image. Hope that works for you too!
watching this in 2024, I am strugling to get the lines with good interpolation. I have no ''interpolate method'' option where I can put the number 2 in. Could someone help me out?
Somebody, I need some help,, I cannot get the lines from generate to path- interpolate to make them. I add the interpolation steps. No live preview to see.. doesn't work for some reason. What do I do? Please help. Thanks!!
Awesome as always, you are great! But I cannot fill those lines with gradient, I constantly get fields instead of lines. What on Earth am I doing wrong?
Been trying for hours now and still can get it to work. Nothing happens when I turn on interpolation live preview. Followed every step, the paths are not grouped and still nothing, it's frustrating!
THANKs from BAVARIA! 1)How can i fill the space between each line with an vertical gradient too? 2)How can i use Inkscape on a UltraHD Display? It always closes and i cant see the menues siutable
Try bumping up the number of lines in the Interpolate plugin. If there's enough of them to fill up the entire space, then you can work with them. At first it will look ugly - just a solid black area. But then you group those lines and make them much more transparent in the Stroke & Fill panel (you can readily combine it with gradient there as well) and they will start resemble a real smoke then. You can also try experimenting with their thickness, and maybe add some slight blur to make them blend with each other better without moire patterns and other ugly artifacts. That's how I made mine that I linked in another comment.
I'm letting properties like in video: Freehand tool, Create Spiro path, 65 smooth, shape none, but in the end I always came up with *a straight line*. EDIT: Found a solution: you have to enable LPE, which is the button next to the smoothness. Now my curve lines aren't straight lines!
did you ungroup them first and then selectet all? Unchecked all the boxes in the interpolate menu? maybe try putting your original lines a little closer together?
For basic video editing, Shotcut's pretty easy to get into. You can't really do much in the way of effects, but it has a pretty level learning curve. If you want more access to effects, filters, and whatnot, check out Lightworks. If I'm not mistaken, they're both open-source (FREE), and available for & compatible with Windows 10.

Thumbs up! Nice tutorial. Quick and easy to realize.

Great video please try to explain how you save your finished works though, like do you use gimp or additional softwares to present em?
Have you used this technique with text? Or a paint splatter technique with text? I'd love to see that! Your videos are awesome!
Thanks, but I don't see why you need convert stroke to path, you can use a gradient for the stroke color and it looks the same.

I actually want to know how you made your 10 sec starting youtube logo video here, I loved it it would be nice if you can teach that :)

In newer versions of inkscape using 1.2 Exponent has to be more than 0.

reduce the smoothing I guess?

I get the same problem too...

good job
I dont know what is issue, but i am getting error like incorrect parameter, only for generate from path functions did not had any issue before.

You just need to apply some blur on it.
thank you
I used the above design along other things. But the smoky effect layer always stays on top. I don't know how to fix it. Could you please help me out?

libxml2 is required by this extension. Install python2-lxml.
Which OS are you running?
I'm letting properties like in video: Freehand tool, Create Spiro path, 65 smooth, shape none, but in the end I always came up with *a straight line*.

Does anyone know why Inkscape 0.92.4 doesn't have any extension?
Fucking hate this!
I was using it just fine with 0.91!
Can the file be exported or imported into illustrator or photoshop?
Yes, just export to svg, all vector program works with svg.
I have an I5 and it's been 10 minutes since I've done the stroke to path action and still nothing :(
Did you have all the lines selected?
Maybe it's fast, you just need to group them together, since "stroke to path" dosen't make them into a single object :)
I don't know why it give me a straight line and not a smooth line! I did all settings as mentioned, my version is 1.0.1
I don't know but under 60 I can get the smoothing effect!
