Chrono Trigger, FF6, and secret of mana had great music. Good music is so important when you're grinding
Finally someone that shares my appreciation for how important music is.
It also is the emotional core of the story. If a good tune kicks up at the right time it takes it to a new level.
Music is crucial in both games and movies alike I agree
you can always play music which ever you want so it doesnt matter
@@norman20100 Wow that was pretty dumb! You might as well play a different game then. Do you even get the point of music in games? I'm sorry for being rude, but that was so stupid...
Erick: I don't love Final Fantasy Tactics.
Me: Alright men, get the pitch forks.
Erick: I fricking love with all my soul, Chrono Cross...
Me: Put the weapons down men, he's an ally.
😂😂
Erick: ...but i don't love Chrono Trigger.
Me: Allright guys, bring back the pitchforks!
chrono cross was an amazing game with 1 massive flaw. it had chrono in its name. yeah the game has other issues, but none is as problematic as this one. to many people the fact that its the sequel to chrono trigger, will forever taint it beyond return.
@@marcosdheleno Cross' other major flaw is that it was never given any form of european release. 2020.........and still nothing.
hell, it took us here in the uk until 2010 to get a proper release of Chrono Trigger.
Tactics was my fave RPG for most my life.
I'm here in defense of Skies of Arcadia. It's my favorite game ever and i have played hundreds. I do think the ideal time to play it is in your mid to late teens however it can absolutely be enjoyed as an adult too. It has such an optimistic and excited spirit of adventuring and finding your place in the world. The story is so fun all the way to the end. The characters are so lovable and diverse. The game is just oozing with charm. I think you need to play it longer than 5-10 hrs - the story is just warming up by then. It is a truly epic journey and an emotional experience that i will never forget. The ending brings a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat each time.
yeah the only thing that annoyed me sometimes was the absurd encounter rate, but it was such a great game it didn't bother me as much as it does in some other rpgs. i still kick myself for not holding onto my dreamcast and all the games i had for it, especially skies of arcadia and sword of the berserk. i really wish they'd do a remaster of arcadia on modern consoles, every time i hear it mentioned i want to play it again so bad.
Sounds like nostalgia reasons and not actually good game reasons. Because I played it and was bored out of my mind and I have beat 40+ jrpgs prior SoA.
Airship battles were the king of all RPG’s I ever played
I love that game, it's 1 of those rare gems that definitely needs a remaster, i would gladly pay good money for it.
@@Jack_80 Did you ever play the Gamecube version? I heard they cut the encounter rate down considerably in that version.
I think Skies of Arcadia is a great game, it has this grand adventure feel into it that non of the classic JRPG has since grandia (which is also amazing, specially 2!). I love the overworld map and i remember hunting for the special hidden islands which i though add to the wold of piracy and wonder. One of the reasons why Golden Sun was such a cool game is when it was reelease it was one of those moments where you've never seen graphics like that in a portable game type of deal. similar to what pokemon did to the old GBA. On top of that, the game is not bad.
i loved a lot of ps1 rpgs so i think the main reason i loved skies of arcadia is because it was the first next gen game of that type i played and there weren't many rpgs of this type on dreamcast, so i was really happy to have a really good one on there. i also liked that it offered a decent challenge, while my main flaw with many ps1 rpgs like ff7 is that they are far too easy.
I never really could get into grandia 2. G1 I loved, and finished.
Hey I agree with your comments, however Grandia 2 literally only came out like 2 months before skies of Arcadia lol, so kind of impossible to compare the two like they're from a different era.
@@trisonicbrandtech I thought skies of arcadia is a Sega dream cast exclusive title
Chrono trigger isnt great because of revolutionary traits but has one narrative with cause and consequence with a great pacing that really hook people with all its strenght.
It's the pushing man! Everything just flows so fluid. From the systems to the story itelself
I didn't care for the story in chrono trigger.
Golden Sun 1&2 are 2 of my favorite jrpgs of all time. I think age when a certain game releases can have great impact. From your description of the timing of pokemon for you, I'd say I'm a few years younger. For me Pokemon released when i was in grade school, and was my first extensive romp in jrpgs. It had a pretty profound impact on the type of games i would favor in the future. Though i do feel like the series has lost a lot of it's charm, becoming pretty stale all in all, it is still beloved for me because it had that impact on me at such a young age. Likewise, Golden Sun dropped when i was in middle school and had a similar effect on me. I could take it anywhere on my new gba, it had insane graphics for a handheld game backed by an amazing soundtrack and even if the mechanics of battle weren't revolutionary, they were incredibly solid and required a certain degree of planning that I hadn't experienced on handheld at that point. There were secret bosses, special weapons that only dropped from specific mobs and had both positive and negative effects. The battle system with its core in the djinns, allowed you to mix and match elements on your characters changing their class and abilities they could use in battle drastically. The summons and their cinematic nature, also coming with the effect of putting your djinns on cooldown reverting you to a lesser class until they regenerate, requiring you to plan defensive turns just as readily as offensive. This is just the surface, the world was vibrant, the characters were charming, i could def go on haha. These are just some of the reasons i love GS, but again i do believe impact greatly depends on age and exposure. I was a kid born in a generation of handheld gaming and that game was def a heavy hitter for me.
I grew up on golden sun must've beaten 1 & 2 over 50 times my favorite games for Gameboy other than zoids legacy
Man you wrote 80% of I was thinking about Golden Sun, thanks a lot for loving the game as much as I do, and yeah, the secrets in the game, dropped items and the activation of their effects... oh god... everything at that point in my life... I think even now few games I can play and put them at the same level.
Same, other than Pokemon Yellow, Golden Sun was the first JRPG I ever played and I freaking loved it! I loved how you could use psynergy outside of the battle and affect the "real world". And on that note, the world of Golden Sun felt very "alive" to me, lots of characters, lots of towns each with their own characteristics
I liked the story of Ni No Kuni but i hated the battle system. I just didn't like having to recrut and boost monsters to fight for you. I would have prefered to do most of the fighting myself and the monsters to be an optional sidekick to use now and then.
That's how I feel about Pokémon.
I tried to like the game but just hated it! Felt like it was a little kids game and hated the whole battle system. I had to bail!
I love Skies of Arcadia. The turn-based ship combat, the exploration, the characters. You mentioned that you didn't know where to go - aimlessly wandering around in the skies is actually like a side quest in the game as you try to discover everything you can find in the world, and the feeling of flying freely in the skies is so beautiful. Not to mention upgrading your ship to the point where you can destroy anything hostile you may run into. The earlier parts of the game are pretty good about warning you away/restricting access to any areas you're not supposed to be in.
Chrono Trigger is one of the few games I replay regularly. The story, the characters, the translation, the scope of the game. The way everything fits together as pieces of a coherent puzzle. The way it earns every emotional moment, the emotional range, the way it turns RPG tropes of the time on their head, the way it makes your decisions matter and affect the world and even the story told, was revolutionary. The art style and music, to me, is the very best of the 16-bit era. I understand not everyone will have the connection to it that I do, having first played it as a teenager the day it came out in the US, but it is my very favorite RPG, and quite possibly my favorite video game, of all time.
You are a honest guy, honest to yourself. Even if i disagree with some of your choices, i respect that because it's your opinion. You deserve my like.
Couldn't agree with you more GhostFace, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If someone starts smashing you because you don't like a certain video game, don't let it get you down. The people that do that, they are just wasting time and a waste of space. No one has the right to do that to you.
@@robcharreviews5609 You said everything, my friend. I agree with you.
When I heard you saying "Golden Sun" you broke my heart man... to me that is with Legend of Dragoon the best RPG I played and I am still waiting whatever they give us from Camelot, remake, reboot, sequel, prequel... oh man =/
It's literally just one dude's opinion. Lmao
I found the mind reading in Golden Sun to be so amazing! I spoke to every NPC in that game for the mind reading alone. They would drop hints on where to find Djin, delve ever so slightly into the true thoughts of casual placeholder NPC's. Really made the world feel alive to me and was enough for me to play-through the game twice. I've only felt something similar from Star Oceans Private Actions and just love that level of detail to the characters thoughts and motivations.
For Final Fantasy Tactics, here's a tip : Save your game and reload! Simple, really. You can also revive your characters with something called white magic and a phoenix down...
Other than that, I understand some of your choices. Strangely enough, I loved FF Tactics, but Tactics Ogre didn't stick somehow. I'll give it another chance later...
The battle system held Ni No Kuni back from being an all time classic for me. Plus that platinum trophy was brutal.
It needed more action basis like the sequel
Watching your vids is like listening to someone i know. It's awesome cause i don't really have a lot of friends who are into gaming especially jrpg's
the battleship system in skies of arcadia is what makes it beloved by a lot of people !
That and the sky pirate theme world, and the story that starts off fast paced a bit like FF6/FF7, and small things like lining up a good alpha storm and see all the enemies health bars fall (not every RPG had health bars back then) or having alot of focus ready for a turn when you get many cannon bonuses. Firing the harpoon cannon was probably the most satisfying move in a RPG at the time.
The characters are the weak part of the game imo, not that they are bad but Grandia II has it beat there. Only Drachma is memorable to me since he has his own quest and doesn't just follow Vyse around. He acts cold but if you talk to the red haired street urchin later in the game he tells you that Drachma was watching out for Vyse during the colosseum battle like he was his son.
Another thing was the Moby Dick style theme with Drachma. His character and the arc whale were taken directly from Moby Dick just like Ayla in Chrono Trigger was taken as directly as can be from Clan of the Cave Bear given that the name was exactly the same: Ayla.
Kinda crazy that I started to like it when the system got more in depth, cause it first I absolutely despised the battleship system. It was just so goddamn slow and tedious without any sense of difficulty or challenge, but at a certain point I started to admire what the game was trying to do with the system and it made it a lot more enjoyable.
For Skies of Arcadia Legends, the selling point for me was the airship battles. At the time I played the game it was an unprecedented game dynamic for me, and I had played quite a few games by that point including at least some RPGs. I also liked the hurricane dungeon that required you to travel through this almost Bermuda Triangle-like area. A lot of the appeal came from the various "discoveries" that you had to find throughout the game as well as the many crew members you had to recruit. I've played many more titles since but even today the game's airship battles is still a favorite.
DQ8 is so good. It’s one of the first true open world jrpgs
I don't know what game you were playing but DQ8 is not open world you need to play through everything in a pretty specific order.
It feels Open World but it's not it's actually a very classic World Map system (a very beautiful one mind you) it gives you the impression of open world but it's not, heck the funny thing is that the 3 first Dragon Quest as well as the first Final Fantasy were probably more open games than DQ8.
To be honest true open world games tend to be very boring or not balanced very well for the amount of content to justify an open world setting. I find Dragon Quest's 8's approach good similar to why I like it for the old FF games in that it allows for good progression through the world and makes you feel like you're constantly exploring new places.
Hey I didn't say I like Open World (I don't like them at all in fact) just stated that DQ8 wasn't Open-World I to prefer an world like DQVIII, FFXII, Ys VIII ...etc... that open little by little when progressing through the story making it so that there is still a good amount to explore but come little by little instead of throwing everything right at the beginning.
I wasn't exactly disagreeing, I was just stating why I'm not a fan of open world games.
If anything I agree we you. Progressive content is more enjoyable and is more well designed instead of a large open field of nothing.
Tales of Symphonia is so bad, but people love it.
Dude you need to have a certain level of patience and plenty of spare time (like100+ hrs) to enjoy a game like tactics ogre
for someone who has a game like ragnarok tactics and hates tactics ogre, and ff tactics really blows my mind
No jrpg needs 100hrs. That only means it is mostly filler and uninteresting
@@civoreb Tell that to the Trails series each one of those games is long af.
@@huzefaharis7991 i have only beaten Trails in the sky 1. It took me 46 hours. You can go on howlongtobeat(dot)com and look up any game. It tells you how long each game takes.
This is true...
What set Skies of Arcadia apart from a lot of JRPGs at the time is its world building imo. The game has very deep lore and the world in the skies you're able to explore IMO is so rich and authentic feeling that to this day I've yet to see in very many games
My favorite JRPG's in no particular order: Final Fantasy VIII, Chrono Cross, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, Arc the Lad (all of them), The Legend of Dragoon, Thousand Arms, Wild Arms 2, Tales of Eternia (Destiny 2), Dark Cloud 1&2
Has nothing to do with the video and no one asked
@@Ripley_From_Aliens did he say if someone asked?
i could never get into dark cloud, but i love rogue galaxy that was made by the same developers.
WOW! rare to see someone giving FFVIII some love, most people hated that one, personally.. I liked it also. I guess people were just expecting something better than what FFVII had given them and never go it.. so they just jumped on the bandwagon of hate.
What can I say about Skies of Arcadia? Although I admit it has its flaws, it's one of the most incredible journeys I've ever been on in a video game. The game takes you on an adventure, where you - the player - feel like you are out sailing the skies, discovering the unknown. That frontier spirit is so strong that it makes you genuinely excited to go out and explore the world to find all of its secrets. It does such a great job of building up the obstacles in front of you that you feel a sense of accomplishment when you finally surpass them (for example, the prison break section in Valua or sailing through the dark rift and making it out alive). No other game has ever made me connect with its world in that way, even to this day. Hopefully I've been able to do the game justice. I think most people who love Skies of Arcadia will agree that that is why the game is so special to them.
needs a switch release Skies of Arcadia
they did release grandia, so I guess SoA is coming.
OMG I would buy it straight! Even overpriced like Mario 3d All stars!
I can feel the viewers urge to jump in with the "Nuh-uh the game of X was great because-" getting stronger with each game mentioned. Calm down everyone, it's an opinion video.
Kind of funny how everyone loves Chrono Trigger but hate Chrono Cross. I love them both and yes Chrono Trigger is the best RPG of all time.
Chrono Cross is NOT a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Apparently 2 different games
@@megaman1806 it's fit what sequel mean. it wrap schala and lavos arc. yeah it's different games. but honestly some sequel have different mechanic. and that's it.
people seem hate it because it different in battle system apparently, too many party member (despite saying suikoden, fft game masterpiece). and other petty thing like mia of chrono party. how the story is convoluted (like wth, many classics masterpiece story is convoluted ex: ff7 ,xenogears, etc). But if people already hate from the start, they will become petty and blame a very little thing ever.
tbh this phenomenon not only exclusive to chrono cross, ff 12 when come out get the same treatment. or any franchise that want to experimenting anything in that regard.
I just wish that there was more to explore in Chrono Cross. It seemed like such a small game exploration wise.
Trigger is fairytale, beautyful in its simplicity.
Cross is pretentious verbose mess of literally NOTHING, which rapes Trigger's legacy and 40+ wooden logs without personality instead of characters.
The question is, how anyone can love this game now without baby duck syndrome.
i don't think cross is that hated really. i like it but i think trigger is superior in almost every way. better story, better setting, better characters, better combat system. i was especially disappointed with the overly simplistic, boring combat in cross. i was expecting a similar combat system to trigger with added depth and instead they switch to this generic system that makes every character feel pretty much identical in combat because of the element grid.
Seriously Bro! Skies of Arcadia is a masterpiece! Its universe, its artistic style, its combat system, its airship battles, and OMG its soundtrack!!! You really need to give it another chance! I agree for almost all other titles of your video. For DQ VIII, even if I loved/completed it on PS2/3DS, I get what you mean and you aren't the only one.
Tactics ogre is one of my all-time favorites, but I had trouble with when I was first starting. The thing you have to realize is that the enemies are scaled to your average level. So if you have any over-leveled characters in the party they will drive the average up and make the enemies overpowered. So it’s a good idea to go in with characters who are all about the same level. Once you realize that, the game is challenging but not impossible. I urge you to give it another shot because i find it to be a very engrossing game.
Great list, thank you for sharing!
For me Skies of Arcadia is unique because of its awesome ship battles and its setting of pirates, geographical discoveries and so on. It starts as an your average JRPG, but then you open up many new interesting features. Atmosphere of discoveries and gathering your crew (and each of them has a personality and impact on battle system) is so rewarding! And you can have your own island later in the game with the ability to build and improve stuff (and the shipwrecked "quest" is one of the most unusual and interesting - you have to gather resources and make a campfire to survive the night). It also has a cute Cupil that evolves into different weapons, ship battles (I've already mentioned them, but they are just so great), many memorable characters (everyone in my family still remember them) and quite a good story with a mix of a drama and comedy. Random encounters are quite often and battles are tedious and sometimes boring (as soon as you master the Focus technique), that's for sure (and because of that I love Grandia II on Dreamcast better). But it is an interesting JRPG with some great ideas you can't find in other games.
I just realized that I have the same guitar as you do! Same model and everything. I got it like nearly 20 years ago or something.
Good videos btw!
I liked ni no kuni but....the battle system just murdered me....
I felt like I would quickly lose mp and then just run around in circles trying to survive by luck. I gave up because of this.
But otherwise I liked the game and still wish I could go back and finish it one day.
nano retro I felt the same way about Ni No Kuni!!! That’s why I’m looking forward to the sequel that comes out next week, it has a different battle system.
I used to think like that too. Until i lost my saved file (around 20 hours) and started a new playthrough 3 years afterwards, this time i paid more attention to the instruction and noticed it's not as simple as i used to thought. I wouldn't say i love the battle system, but it's much more enjoyable than my first playthrough
The ending sucks
I felt the same way about “Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together”. It took me picking it up like 7 or 8 times before the battle system really clicked and I finally fell in love with it. The story is really good also. The battle system is so similar yet different than most SRPG’s and until you get the hang of it and understand it, the game is not enjoyable. I really loved the portrait artwork also.
Me: “wwwhhhaaaaaaaaa”
You: “I can feel your right now” (talking about Chrono Trigger)
With that said sir, I see all your points for every game. I love almost every game on your list but I see every point you made, no hate from me. Your point of view, though prefaced with negative feelings came off positive and can’t get made when you speak from the heart man!
Great vid!
i don't get how you can love chrono cross but not chrono trigger. i like chrono cross but trigger had a better story, setting, characters, and especially a better combat system than cross. the combat system in cross is so simple, repetitive, and boring compared to the much deeper and more fun system in trigger. i still like cross a lot but to me it's inferior in most areas.
I think something we don’t recognize enough is the fact that a lot of our favorite games are favorites because we played them at the right time. Some games just don’t hit the same when played 10-20 years later, especially if you have a different set of benchmarks and experiences to compare them to.
So true
Nahhh
Xenoblade for Wii is one of the game I've played the most. It doesn't start as an epic game, but I really loved the open world, the day-night cycle, the music (my favorite part of a game), the story and even the predictable twists we've seen in so many games. I like how npcs are part of something you develop from time to time and the many subquests and even some of the late game boss fights. By the way I really understand and appreciate you Erick for standing on your opinions, it's really important to be truly passionate about something! Thank you, I really enjoyed the video!
i can feel your respect to people who love the games and the games itself even if they arent your cup of tea 🙂 even if you got some of my favorites in there i love to listen to your opinion, its interessting to see what people like and actually i think its cool that not everybody loves the same games
Damn trigger and ff tatics, right in my middle / high school nostalgia feels.
Skies of Arcadia is my top 5 JRPGs of all time.
Maybe you only have 5 games then.
Excuse my language but holy fucking shit, my heart jumped when I heard Matataki Village at 9:53 I had to pause the video and control myself because I live in a society where most forget about this game's existence and Dark Cloud is my favourite game of all time!
You know you can resurrect death characters in final fantasy tactics right?
yeah you have phenix down or magic
I would reset if a character died. I was hardcore back then.
You know the corpse turn into crystal gone after 3 turns?
or just use main people who dont die for good : D
@@mooserocka522 umm no they can
Even though I already watched this when it came out im clutching my old Mr Face pearls all over again at the top 2 lol! That's ok though more CT & FFT for me lmao
Lots of games on our list would also be on mine. We dont dislike them, we understand why they're important and even acknowledge how good they were for the time they came out, but yeah the claims of best of all time, and best rpgs ever are hard to swallow lol. great list man.
Thank you.
Chrono Trigger’s dark secret is that it’s safe. That’s the only reason it’s as well loved as it is. On paper it’s one of the most cliche jrpg stories ever with one-dimensional characters, but it takes a light-hearted, cartoonish approach in order to not take itself too seriously, so it doesn’t get criticized for that because the combat is competent and time travel based multiple endings is a cool gimmick. But it’s more “flawless” than “impressive,” there is a difference, and it’s able to be that flawless because it doesn’t really take a lot of risks. But nobody talks about that.
I will preface this with. I think it depends on when you play a game. Chrono trigger and FFT and tactics ogre LUCT. All came at a certain time in my youth. Chrono trigger is extremely nostalgic for me. If those memories were not attached. I don't think I would love it as much as I do.
Final fantasy tactics is my favorite. I am always comparing tactics games to it.
I understand why others don't like it though.
Also.. it really is simple. Don't let people you don't want to lose die. Seriously... I would replay whole maps when I royally fucked up. When I did lose someone not really important I would just try to finish fast, or hope for a crystal.
Xenoblade is a masterpiece for me. Maybe my favorite jrpg, maybe.
The ost, the world, the characters, the charm, the story. Just excellent in every area.
nano retro Same here. I just love how complex is the story, there is nothing with this magnitude at the moment...and I love how story is connected with XC2. OST is top notch, probably number 1 of all the time for me. And, God, this story...very special game to me. With rest of the games I agree (even CT, because Im annoyed by the fans, who bash Chrono Cross only because it's not a sequel they wanted, and I do think Cross is better game overall, my top 3 jRPG's of all time-probably next only to first Xenoblade).
tbh after Xenogears Xenoblade is ass so yeah it didn't live up to its firat game
I didn't love the game until I learned how to play as Melia. Now it's in my top 5 favorite games I've ever played
The only game I love more than the original Xenoblade is EarthBound. Top 2 games of all time for me.
Killah Los Xenogears and Xenoblade aren't the same franchise....they're totally separate....you're free to prefer Xenogears ( my sister is the same way ) but you really can't say Xenoblade didn't live up to a game it has nothing to do with and wasn't trying to be.
Xenoblade??!
Well you opinion I respect it
I mean I get him, I also love Xenoblade and consider it as one of the best JRPGs that I played, but in the first 10+ hrs of the game, the progression is slow, especially on the battle system (arts were few and had longer cooldowns so you have to rely more on auto attacks, which initially turned me off on my very first hour of my first playthrough)
So 4 years has past. Did you changed your mind on at least one of them? 😅
You often have this beautiful old stratocaster. Must sound great, I guess.
Funny thing... I also think chrono trigger is somewhat overrated. It feels like a good little tale, like a fable. The world map is small, not that much exploration and NPCs to interact with. It feels kind of empty. The music is great though and it has it's own atmosphere making it stand out. But it's not epic like a whole world to explore with airships, submarines, ships. No hidden bosses, side quests... No reason to grind or build your characters to absurdly high levels. It's just a great little story. But it has a soul that many game lacks. But I don't think it would qualify for my top 10 list.
Skies of Arcadia is really good game, the pirating, sky battle, open world exploration that is rewarded, VMU side quest, story is way better than many other jrpgs, crew recruiting, ship customizing. All these are quite unique for this game that is very hard to find at it time, even big game FF9 which released same year didn’t have these features. To summarize Skies of Arcadia is one of those unique, great games.
I see.
Skies on ps4
still trash lol sorry rogue galaxy whoops that game
I think to fully understand the appreciation so many people have for Skies of Arcadia, you need to look at the context of it's release. When it came out the writing on the wall was already there that the dreamcast was kind'a done for, but games like SoA showed SEGA was going to go down fighting, or at least go out with a bang. Compared to other console games at the time SoA was visually impressive, and simply massive in scope and scale. It was also incredibly unique thematically and stylistically vs other JRPS of the time, with the whole Skypirates thing, including ship to ship combat. With was a very solid story with some extremely likeable and memorable characters, there truly was nothing on the market like it, either in style or substance. All of this just added up to a very solid package that Dreamcast fans could show people as proof of concept for the DCs power and appeal, thus giving it a massive cult following. I remember in the early 00s it was actually a meme that SoA and DC fans would find a way to insert SoA into almost any gaming conversation. I may of even been guilty of this myself a few times.
That being said, with hindsight we can admit it's not perfect - the level design is often a little bland, and the random encounter rate is just awful. The Gamecube version is better, as it completely fixes the encounter rate, and adds a whole new side story that's practically a new mini-campaign involving rival sky pirates. Even with the issues, however, I do still classify it as a masterpiece, simply because of the level of care and polish that clearly went into making a game so unique for its time.
Skies of Arcadia!? Noooooo! That game WAS a masterpiece. You never played the whole game. It really picks up and keeps getting better. The exploration was so so good as well as building your own base. I LOVE the two antagonists as well. Ramirez’s music is in my top 5 villain theme musics. You are missing out by not playing the whole thing. Use a walkthrough if you dont know where to go. Agree with ni no kuni though. Too much grinding and bad battle system. Also, Xenoblade Chronicles? Eh? AND Chrono Trigger!!?? Well.... FFT you say? It is one of the best games ever mate... It’s tough but tremendous. Wiegraf anyone? Respect your opinions though. 👍
Skies of Arcadia was such an underated gem. I wish there could have been a remaster for the ps4.
I've always wanted to play skies of Arcadia it reminds a little of Grandia 2 graphic wise and that's one of my favorite games
If you've got time to spare, the guy in this video does a phenomenal job at breaking down the Chrono Trigger storyline:
ruclips.net/video/_JoPAn_dbr0/видео.html
He breaks the story down into two timelines (original and modified) and he really shows the connection the two have and how your influence changes from one to the other. It really uses the time travel mechanic better than any game (and most other media) out there. I also find it incredibly interesting how it mirrors Earth's history (dinosaurs were killed by a meteor giving humans dominance, man survived the ice age by primarily living in a high tech city in the sky, medieval ages of the 1000s, and the end of the world- Y2K, etc).
The battle system of Chrono Trigger is simple and complex at the same time.
This happens mainly because of the way area of effects work (lines, circles, etc) rewarding you for waiting the right time to use a skill and, also, double and triple techs are simple to understand but add a lot of depth to the party you are currently using. This creates a rewarding experience that is not overly complicated (unlike, say, FF6).
The story told is very good and the characters evolve with the narrative, which is not true to the vast majority of jRPGs of the time. I mean, I love Secret of Mana, but the character development is almost 0.
I believe the only title from that era that rivals the history/party evolution of Chrono Trigger is FF6 (and I played the vast majority of the jRPGs from those times, gotta love emulators).
See, that actually sounds like a pretty fair look at its gameplay. I like Chrono Trigger myself, but I never really understood all the people talking about how it's so "revolutionary" for some of the things it did, like time travel. How? The time travel is basically a glorified method of accessing other world maps (something Final Fantasy IV and I'm sure many others have done before), and the most that things in the past can actually affect things in the future is using a trick to get two sets of particular items from treasure chests (via one of the only locales in the entire game that appears in more than one time period), while the rest of the time you're just following a story which is itself extremely linear (though I will give them props for having multiple endings depending on which point in the game you decide to take on the final boss, which is possible to do very early and even earlier in a New Game+, though multiple endings weren't exactly a new concept either). The combo attacks is another thing it gets praise for, but I also doubt that's never been done before (one example that pops to mind being the twin mages in FF4, albeit a more simplified version). New Game+ was pretty cool, though, and I don't think much if any games were doing it before Chrono Trigger (and it's somewhat rare to see even now, which is a real shame; given how freakishly long RPGs are, plus all the level grinding you need to do, it should be standard to let us re-play through the story with all levels and non-key equipment left intact).
@@YamatoFukkatsu the combat system in trigger is a lot deeper than it is in cross. in cross every character feels pretty much the same because of the stupid element system. i still like cross a lot but i think trigger has it beat in just about everything.
@@YamatoFukkatsu excuse me, FF IV has time travel? Care to explain that one? I played FFIV and didnt see the party traveling to the past / future.
@@Castapher I didn't say that. Look at my post again, I stated that FF4 has multiple world maps. That's the comparison I was making.
@@YamatoFukkatsu Understood. I was about to say that the past changes the present (treasures and even world maps gets changed, depending on what you do in the past) Such as, in the medieval time Robo stays behind at the Church and cultivates the land and when you return back to that same place in the present, you notice theres is now a forest where before it was just a lifeless piece of land.
Basically this was a novelty back then. Oher games can provide different maps, but these maps are just different places. In CT, they are the exact same places that one can modify the other depending what you do in the past. I only wished CT could let you play and progress "new game+ story" for the "saved" future map and see how the cities would like if you defeated Lavos in the present/past. Bummer :(
That CC poster in the background is so much more enjoyable than the actual game was lol. Chrono Cross isn't beloved, but enough people love it for it to make my list of 10 rpgs that everyone else loves but I don't.
To me FF6 is better than Chrono Trigger and I played both on the Snes.
But to choose the best JRPG is very hard for me. Cause there are good games coming out every year. I normally go towards the Tales of series or Star Ocean series. Then for SJRPG I love the Disgaea series for many reasons. I played so many. Also I can respect your opinion. Also I agree 100% on tactics ogre let us cling together. Never really like the Tatics Ogre series.
The trouble with Xenoblade Chronicles in general is that it devolved the Xeno franchise from a lore-heavy philosophy session into a collect-a-thon. I still really love the game, but that pressure to complete all the side-"quests" really drags the pacing of the story.
What I liked about Golden Sun was not so much a retro feel; on the contrary, it felt very different from classic SNES titles. I liked its artistic style and the idea of the Djinns, of elemental companions. Incidentally, that's also a major piece that I liked about Chrono Trigger. I can't stand RPGs where all the characters are more or less interchangeable as far as abilities. I want an incentive to play with each character in my party, the ideal being that I can't decide because everybody has such nice advantages. Golden Sun nailed that. I just wish it didn't have all those goofy icons in the menus.
ffs, Xenoblade is not the same franchise as Xenogears or Xenosaga....I really wish people would quit trying to claim there's a singular Xeno franchise when it's at least 2 completely separate ones ( the saga trilogy had some very obvious connections to gears, but Xenoblade is it's own thing ). I mean Xenoblade was only called that to pay homage to the team's previous work and the use of similar themes....it was originally meant to be called Monado: Beginning of the World. I do agree a bit on the collect-a-thon aspect getting out of hand though, as much as I love all 3 Xenoblade games it does get exhausting grinding for items to complete side quests ( or in XC2's case, grinding crystals hoping the gacha decides to be nice instead of giving you another million generic Blades.... )
Man, you shot down 3 of my favorites.
Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VIII and every Pokemon game xD
Live and let live says I.
I agree with some of them (I've never been interested in Pokemon, for example), but Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are two of my favorite RPGs ever. I wouldn't say it was the first great SNES RPG, nor would I say it revolutionized storytelling, only it's overall execution was what makes it remarkable. Everything put together was what made it great. The music, characters and story. And I have to say that the music plays an integral part, the way certain songs revisit the main theme to make everything feel connected through time. Same with Cross. They are extremely charming. This is similar to why I consider Phantasy Star IV one of the greatest as well, the charm of the whole PS IV package is huge. Something to consider though is that I played these games when they originally released, but I still feel the same after numerous times replaying them throughout the years since then. Thanks for the video, always interesting to hear others' opinions of loved games!
You miffed me with Tactics Ogre. Broke my heart with Final Fantasy Tactics!
But then you put Chrono Trigger...
... and totally redeemed yourself.
I’ve tried so hard to like that game. Maybe 9 year old me would have been blown away, but I really think that game is overrated. It’s just so random and not unified.
@Erick Landon RPG. If you can't finish FFT, then I would suggest watching and reading through the story on RUclips. There are so many twists, turns, backstabbing, deceit, misdirection, you name it.
Wasn't gonna comment until what u said about chrono trigger...😥u even got the cross poster man...:'( lol
Haha thanks xD
As someone who was in the early teens when gen1 pokemon exploded, I think it was something special in the sense it was portable and allowed for you to trade digital goods and engage in pvp with your friends in the very early days of multiplayer games, and on top of that you still got the single player campaign, exploration etc. It remained interesting up to gen2, which is a favorite among many people, but I dropped soon after that.
Aside from the gameplay and some tech novelties these were "ugly" and "outdated" games even when they first came out. What really baffles me is how gamefreak can still churn out ugly, buggy and outdated games decades after and still see tremendous sucess.
This is the video I point to when my friends, who all know my love for JRPGs, ask me why I hate this channel, refuse to subscribe to this channel, and immediately tell RUclips to stop recommending (which I otherwise don't bother with). Of course, this video COULD be a 4D troll video, but I doubt it. This is one of the few times where I will state that someone's opinions (yours) are factually incorrect. One only needs to read some of the other replies to understand why.
But hey, got me to reply, enjoy those extra pennies!
I’m getting to that point, a lot of his recommendations on his other videos are just flaccid, flat, and dry JRPGs.
He just doesnt love these games
X2 He Just want to be edgy
I admire your courage putting Chrono Trigger as your number 1 on this list (or having it on the list at all for that matter haha). I love these videos because everyone has their favorites and I appreciate that you share yours. And while I disagree having it on this list, well done sir.
“I love JRPGs” hates the Dragon Quest series.
11 is actually good, but even 5 and 8 are....just.....average.
I love RPGs, and I have no use for most of Dragon Quest. So what?
He actually loves DQXI prolly the only DQ game he rates very highly.
Your comments are all over the place. Watching your previous videos about best jrpgs, with some of them from this video on that list. Either you like them or you don’t. I only came across your channel this week and watched many of your videos. Now I’m conflicted what jrpgs you actually like or not.
DQ 8 is my favorite RPG of all time!
I can appreciate your honesty in this video. You're not trying to be edgy for views, you tried these games several times and acknowledge that they're just not for you. I feel the same with a bunch of games (Super Mario Sunshine, Disgaea, etc) and that's ok.
Final Fantasy 4 (or 2 on the SNES) was the game that made me really fall in love with RPGs. Final Fantasy Tactics is IMO, the best game in the series. The permadeath just made things interesting. I actually agree with you on Chrono Trigger. I tried that when it first came out and put it down out of boredom, never to pick it up again.
man... FF tactics is on this list? And I understand the criticism about the pera death but I thought everyone saved before a fight just in case u permanently lose a party member. So u could just restart the fight
I can't believe you don't like Xenoblade :( I love it with all my heart.
I'm sure he loves a game you don'k like as well.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion on games. I respect this list Erick. Anyone who has negative things to say about your list needs to relax. To each their own. I really understand the love behind Ni No Kuni. I played through a decent amount of it but I need to finish it which I’ll probably start a new game. I think the love for it stems from the artist behind it. The artist is renowned for his movie genius. I wish Ni No Kuni just had more difficulty to it. I felt it was missing something but I just don’t know exactly what it is... did anyone feel the same way?? I got through a solid amount of FF Tactics too but just didn’t complete it. I honestly never tried Chrono Trigger despite having it for PS1 as part of the FF Chronicles. (I really don’t understand why it was released in a FF compilation release...)
Hi Erick.
Excellent list. I can see your point of view on many of these titles, but now its on to the criticism lol
I can't speak for everyone, but for me what made Golden Sun so beloved was the variety of environmental uses of the psychic abilities, and the surprisingly deep class system based on which Djinns were equipped to each character.
Tactics Ogre is essentially Final Fantasy Tactics with critical path options, which serve to give the narrative extra weight for players, and while the skill system certainly isn't as exploitable as the FF job system, it allows you to make very powerful characters with a singular focus, which I enjoyed, but I know its not for everyone, even among SRPG fans.
And I agree wholeheartedly about Chrono Trigger, as its seen as a "perfect" game due to nostalgia goggles.
I personally think its a great game, but I regularly criticize my friends for calling it perfect because that can only be said on a surface level due to the technicality that there are no flaws to point out, but it doesn't excel on any level other than in its soundtrack and visuals for the time.
Keep it up!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing, Erick! Chrono Trigger is my personal favorite game of all-time but I understand the spirit of videos like this and I appreciate your honesty man! Hey...at least we agree on Chrono Cross being an awesome game! ;) And just curious but have you ever played Chrono Trigger on the Super NES? My younger brother and sister actually played the PS1 version and the load times on that version are CRINGE-WORTHY. The SNES version is definitely the one to play for a true, seamless gaming experience. :)
Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favourite games of all time, I'm sure a bit of it is down to nostalgia, and I haven't played it in years, so if I came back to it now I might not enjoy it so much, I don't know. Ni No Kuni is like a far more childish and simple version of DQ VIII, so I kind of agree with you there. Saying that, I did enjoy Ni No Kuni, but fuck all the hand holding.
Not sure if it fits in the same genre, but one game I didn't enjoy much was Okami. For many reasons, but the little imp/fairy was a big one. So damn annoying!
I'm just playing 8 for the first time (never played DQ at all though) and I think its great
0:55 thats crazy i mean even i beat it when i was a kid
in regards to fft i recommend overlevelling. trust me it makes the game infinitely better
I like how you slog through so many hilariously arduous games for the hidden gems/hidden trash series but then you have so much trouble getting through or liking much much smoother experiences.
I can see why someone wouldn't be blown away by FFIV or Golden Sun 1 (had the benefit of being one of the only worthwhile RPGs on its system for a bit and leading into lost age). I have similar thoughts on the DQ series that seems to keep afloat off nostalgia, music and Toriyama's designs. I can understand being annoyed by open-world systems. Ni no Kuni also was considered to be riding on the presentation by a lot of critics.
But then you dislike Tales of Symphonia, Chrono Trigger, FFT and Skies of Arcadia? It boggles the mind.
Especially considering CT is like a 25 hour RPG max.
I always believe that it's ok for people to hate or love certain games no matter what the hype is. It boils down to personal taste. In my opinion if you play any jrpg long enough you will develop somewhat of a love hate relationship with that game especially if your playing an older title. Most people defend most of these games based off nostalgia in my opinion and that's totally ok because I tend to do the same thing. I held off on playing Chrono trigger till I was thirty years old and I didn't get all the hype and love most people have for that game. But I recently finished xenogears and was dreading all the negative shit I heard about disc 2 and I actually loved what they did in disc 2. That said, I really love your channel dude!
Thanks, but I don't hate any of the games in this video. I just said I didn't love them ;)
I actually think almost all snes jrpgs are extremely basic and prototypical. And in comparison chrono trigger really stands out (for an snes game).
Even FF6's battle system just completely underwhelms me with the lack of animation and music.
Honestly I prefer the ps1 era of jrpgs because I think they took the genre to the next level.
I can completely understand Number One. When I first tried it, I hated it because the objective wasnt clear. At one point, the game gives you a choice of random portals and says "have fun!". I basically had to use a strategy guide to tell me what portal to use, and from there I'm halfway through the game without using a guide. Now I'm really enjoying it.
I definitely would not consider DQ8 to be the best Dragon Quest. I would choose DQ7, but I still think that the DQ series is just not for you although you should give DQ11 a try when it comes out
Once I get a PS4, I will.
Dq7 is so frigging long I'm at 100+ hours
It also comes out for PC on Steam.
they all suck tbh to chilfdish Tooooo childish same with the mana Gay series rather play Lunar
Ok I'll bite. I did love Skies of Arcadia. However at that time it was only the 3rd RPG I ever played. I was sucked into the world and loved all the characters and was really into the story. Looking back on it now after so many other RPG's I can see it being a by the book RPG. So with me, I may hold it up high because of how early I played it and not knowing how much better other RPGs are out there. So I'll give you that sure.
The best jrpg ever made is Dragon Quest 7. Second is Grandia
Wow.... That's what I was thinking! Well said!
it took me a few tries to get into grandia, it just seemed way too kiddy and silly in the beginning. once i did get into it i did enjoy it a lot, but it still wouldn't make it into my top 10, there are just way too many amazing rpgs that top it for me.
I understand and agree with most of the list but I also happen to love Chrono Trigger for it's music, sci-fi-magic story and it's simplicity. Yes, simplicity is something really good, hard or complex doesn't mean good nor better and high difficulty or complexity it's not a requirement for a masterpiece. The other I'm going to call is Xenoblade Chronicles. It's flawed and tedious sometimes, 5 or 6 music tracks are great but all the others are just ok, it lacks some hidden interesting places, everything is outside there are no indoors, and combat is weird, hard to keep the fight under control, but I can overlook all that because of the incredible scenario (you'll have to play for more than 30 hours to realize what you are looking at and your position in this very weird landscape and then the story goes all J-RPG at the last minute
I’m gonna help you out on two of these, and you’ll thank me one day! But first I have to agree, Dragon Quest 8 is NOT all they make it out to be... it bored me to absolute *tears* at times!!
So. For Tactics Ogre, the PS1 version is entirely different in its battle mechanics, and a lot more accessible. But you need to know one trick: ALWAYS KEEP THREE WITCHES. Always. You need to use their elemental spells to manipulate enemies’ who deal certain elements with their spells. If you’re gonna play the PSP version, USE THE BRADYGAMES GUIDE. Seriously. It requires it imo.
And as for Final Fantasy Tactics, the trick is to give all your dudes auto-potion, then eventually sell all potions that are not high or above. Then eventually switch to keeping only x and above. If you do that method, plus keep a summoner for healing and plenty of time magic, you should be golden. I never have people die with these defensive strategies unless I’m being very reckless. Also, you recruit sooooo many special characters that eventually you run out of slots for very many generic ones. (Red chocobos are OP.) The PSP FFT sucks imo. The PS1 version is tops.
I enjoy your videos and opinions! I hope this can help you to be able to appreciate those games. Before I figured out these things, I was in your same boat. Now, they are two of my favorites!
Thank you. I really need to give FF Tactics a second chance, no doubt about it.
8 Bored you? What does Dragon Quest 7, killed you to boredom? 8 is "yeah whatever" but 7 is "GOD IS THAT BORING"
I used to like pokemon. They call us genwunners
U should give 1 More chance to Tactics ogre and all ogre saga in general
Marco Ochoa I agree. It doesn’t really pick up til the end of chapter 2. Plus many branching paths and the replay value is sky high.
i think the reason why golden sun is so well liked is because it was for a lot of people very nostalgic, and plus its considered to be one of the best rpgs on the GBA. If both the first and second game were one game (like Camelot intended) it could easily make the top 5 greatest jrpgs ever made.
Ah, the nostalgia factor, just like many other games. I don't have nostalgia factor over games like Golden Sun or Chrono Trigger; I didn't grow up with them nor did they leave something deep in me to become memorable enough.
10. love that franchise but its definitely not for everyone even within RPG fans
9. that's one of my most favs final fantasys :D
8. it didn't register with me either. still hope its fanbase gets a remake for switch
7. didn't care for it as well
6. equipping djinns in various ways for myriad of spells and use spells outside of battle for puzzles, thats the appeal :3
5. how you feel about pokemon is exactly how i feel about dragon quest franchise. love yangus from DQ8 still
4. hate Ni No Kuni. meh story, dumbass characters and idiotic party A.I. i wish its battle system was in pokemon tho
3. loved its battle system but its story was so predictable. its not open world at all having very linear zone progression lol
2. i didn't like that game either, so you're not alone haha.
1. LOL dude, i don't like that game as well. i love its battle system but i didn't care for the characters or the story at all
Tough list to share for sure. For most RPG fans it comes down to the story. Your list contains most of the best pre-teen friendly stories.
You have said many times that you prefer a darker story so this list wasn’t surprising to me.
One reason I follow your channel is because you are honest enough to share your real opinion.
Dragon quest viii is the best rpg on the ps2 how dare you sir
Agrenost shadow hearts
Smt Lucifer’s Call
But Ps2 was just the best in general
Omg... I had to write a second comment because of your #2 on the list. I recommend you revisit that one my friend. Its literally the best the genre has to offer. You should never let a character die in the first place. You have forever to revive a character. Losing a character is on you.
Out of all these games, I somewhat agree with DQVIII, in that I liked it, but was never blown away by it. I simply thought it was a nice classic style JRPG, but nothing amazing. I strongly agree with Ni No Kuni, though. I played about 12 hours, and while nothing got me confused or really bothered me, the game simply never hooked me and I quickly got bored and just moved on to other games. I preordered the sequel, though, because it looks more interesting, so hopefully that works out better for me. I disagree with FFIV. It's not my all time favorite JRPG, but it's certainly one of my favorite SNES games. Same with Chrono Trigger, except it is my favorite of its period, and I found it to be very breezy and charming in every possible way, while Cross never quite hooked me in.
Me: Come on just say your number 2. It’ll be fine.
Him: Number 2...
Me: *rage builds* It’ll be fine with his 1.
Him: I love Chrono Cross, but...
Me: head explodes.
Was hoping to see Secret of Mana on the list.
I've only played it for a few hours, so I couldn't really talk properly about it.
GamerBill
Am I the only one who find Secret of mana freaking boring ?
Nope. It's also the only installment in the series that needlessly has the stamina meter if I remember right.
GamerBill
Yeah ,way to kill a gameplay
You find it boring because of the fact that you have dedicate time
Skies of Arcadia was a great game and a rare gem. Of course there will never be a game that everyone will like just as there will never be a game that everyone hates..ok maby E.T for the Atari 2600. But then again there is probably someone out there that has E.T videogame t-shirts.
Omg I also can’t get into chrono trigger. I have tried so hard so many times. I also LOVELOVELOVE Chrono Cross. This is an old vid but I’m just seeing it and was thinking to myself “it would be funny if 1 was chrono trigger”.
Thank you for showing me I’m not alone my friend.
Always wanted to play skies of Arcadia. Golden sun was cool just because of the mechanic of combining the djinni but was done better in the second one. It was neat to have so many options for battle though. The story was meh to me. And no nostalgic feel for me either- and I am 36. Def doesn’t feel like a snes jrpg or anything.
I didn't grow up with Chrono Trigger so I have no nostalgia for it and my first and only time playing it on the DS was in 2016. Assuming that the DS is very similar to the SNES, I'd say it held up for a game that was 2 decades old and that's a major accomplishment by itself. I can't imagine what the experience was like for someone in the 90's.
I also absolutely love the fact that it didn't have random encounters and it had a ton of replayability with the multiple endings.
It's obviously not the best JRPG ever if you count every JRPG that came after it but the significance of it's impact can't but understated.
My gahhhh i thought i was the only one who disliked most of these XD
Xenoblade and chrono trigger are the most overrated games imo
Well, I don't dislike them. I actually liked them and enjoyed them.
for the hardware its on its nowhere near overrated no jrpg comes close besides ff6 which is extremely good in its own right, but imho lacks the story depth.
Anyone that plays Chrono Trigger and thinks it's overrated is playing it with a modern mindset. The music, the battle system, the story, the time travel effects (it actually got time travel right), the characters, the world, are all memorable and top notch. And considering it was game with no fat on it (it's about a twenty hour game with tons of replay value for all of the endings), if you were to hold it up against any of its contemporaries there are just no comparisons.
If by "overrated" you mean "perfect" then yeah, I agree
If his opinion is that it's overrated, then it's overrated for him. Enough said. Nothing you say will probably change his mind.
My only beef with your list are the reasons. You only played a few hours of Skies of Arcadia so yeah you don’t see the appeal. From finding a crew, to the ship battles all unique for its time. It may not ages well but yes it deserves its praise. For FFT that’s so easy to overcome and to deal with. Auto heals, revive spells. Not to mention you have to get rid of those guys anyway because you pick up so many characters. And for Chrono Trigger your first mistake is you played the PS1 version first lol. The SNES is the best version of the game. The story is not light hearted at all. I could go on and on but in the end it’s your opinion and that’s fine. At least your honest and not trying to appease people and I respect that.
I don't think playing Trigger on the SNES or wherever else would change my opinion on it, since I enjoyed the game regardless of the PS1 version's flaws. Same goes for Tactics; I've given various chances to that game in the past and nothing has worked, so even if I could easily overcome the thing that bothered me about it, I would still have the same opinion on it. It's a great game, but I just don't love it. Now, Skies of Arcadia, I have to admit you do have a point; I should give it another chance and perhaps I'll love. Thank you for respecting my opinion, and yes, I like being honest with all aspects of my thinking, even when it's about games I don't love or like, regardless of what people think or say about me.
