I think this person just meant that listening to Thay has made them look at life differently and contemplate different perspectives. I don’t believe their choice of words necessarily indicates that they don’t understand the value of silencing one’s mind or the benefits of meditation and stillness. Im glad peace and compassion have touched both of your lives. Eternally grateful for having received guidance from people like Thay.

Here's a quote from his book, No Mud No Lotus "Happiness is possible right now, today-but happiness cannot be without suffering. Some people think that in order to be happy they must avoid all suffering, and so they are constantly vigilant, constantly worrying. They end up sacrificing all their spontaneity, freedom, and joy. This isn’t correct. If you can recognize and accept your pain without running away from it, you will discover that although pain is there, joy can also be there at the same time."

Such a poignant point about looking insde and understanding your self. How simple and yet so profound. All the answers are always inside. That is why it is so very important to start your own Inner Journey, so you actually can understand who you are and why ! The simple truth is most people are afraid to look inside and afraid to let go of the many illusions they live in daily. They are totally consumed in the illusions and do not realize they are living in a state of nonreality. I know this from helping thousands of people take those first few steps. Then the magic happens !
I am checking this fellow out a bunch and waiting for him to speak about the two worlds we all live in daily and have acces to. And then to mention there are other worlds as well in even higher consciuosness states. We can all go there rather easily. Most people are only aware of the lower state we call reality or the physical world or outer world. The daily working world. The Inner World has much different boundaries and limits that are in fact limitless. That is where all peace of mind, knowledge and understandig comes from.

It's true that many, many couples give up on each other through lack of patience and sufficient compassion; they give up prematurely perhaps. So I can appreciate (what I think may be) Hanh's motivation for claiming that changing one's attitude is the key, not changing partners. It's not about changing the environment, but one's attitude - something I've heard from other Buddhist practitioners. Well, yes - up to a point. But there are times when patience and love are not enough: people often grow apart; they discover that their temperaments are too different; their values also may be quite different - something they learn much later in the relationship. Now sometimes open-heartedness, patience, compassion can salvage the relationship, but it would be naive to suppose that it would in all cases. Nor is there any cosmic law stipulating that two people OUGHT to remain together indefinitely. What many people are unwilling to acknowledge is that love doesn't last and that what binds them together (in many cases) are the children and family responsibilities. Even if they do love each other still, it doesn't necessarily follow that they should remain together. Moreover, just because you're willing to listen and open up, your partner will not necessarily do so as well. Speaking from experience, I'd say that many people would open up in turn, but not all. It's not your fault or responsibility if your partner doesn't. If the Buddha, a supposedly enlightened being, was dismissed and disliked by many, then it's perfectly understandable how others might not listen to us, irrespective of our spiritual development and good intentions. It's a complex issue - to be examined case by case. To make nice-sounding conciliatory generalizations, while laudable, is simplistic and naive.
In another context, I can imagine a scenario in which it would certainly be appropriate to change environments. Let's imagine a 17 year old boy who wants to earn some money working at a factory. It's mind-numbing and repetitive work - but he agrees to do it for a while because he needs the money and is still too inexperienced to attain a better and more stimulating job. It would be dangerous to say in this case: "No, my boy, you can stay in that factory for the rest of your life; your dissatisfaction has its root causes in a negative attitude. It's not the environment or the job that's the problem; it's your attitude." Which is clearly nonsense - and dangerous nonsense. Staying at the factory would be intellectual suicide; it would kill his spirit. He'll need a job where he could one day utilize his creative intelligence (ideally speaking). While it's true there are situations in which more forbearance, more patience, more compassion on our part can mean the difference between heaven and hell, it's also sometimes true that staying in the same place would be idiocy and nothing more - limiting our options and opportunities for growth.

"Interbeing means you cannot be by yourself alone. You have to co-be, inter-be, with everything else ... You carry Mother Earth, you carry the sunshine, you carry the rain, everything. So, 'we' means the whole cosmos." - Thich Nhat Hanh

Thank You dear Sangha. This question seems like something of a trick question and somewhat implies a conflict in Buddhist teachings: if there is "no self" (Anatman) how can we try to end suffering. Firstly, Anatman, "no-self" requires definition. Anatman was Buddha's response to Atman (eternal, "divine?", beyond death), after inquiry, experience, searching and enlightenment. I believe Judeo-Christian cultures equate Atman with "soul", something which survives without a body or life. Buddha was reported as claiming that after searching the universe for "God(s)" he found no proof of their existence. Who has? I believe that Buddhism seems to imply a greater (God-like) self and a smaller, personal self. Perhaps Thich Nhat Hanh got into that later, as he said.

In such moments fairly hard to resist so called " inner monster". I feel weak in front of it. Im trying to get the insight while practising breathing and walking. However, its not too easy for me. Maybe im doing something wrong...

As much as I love Thich, I don't think it's quite true to say that one need ONLY change one's attitude or perspective, not the circumstances. Sometimes, due to impatience and short-sightedness, we admittedly, hastily try to change the circumstances. Yes, sometimes that's uncalled for, but not always. And why make the separation between a change in perspective and a change in circumstances? Isn't that a false dichotomy (at least in some cases)? For example, if you realize that your brain and abilities are worth much more than a factory job, won't you seek out employment which is more in alignment with your abilities/talents/intelligence? To stay in that job would be a kind of suicide, especially for a person of ability. Or perhaps one discovers serious differences in temperament, perhaps profound cultural differences which make living with a partner nigh impossible. Neither person is to blame, and it need not be an outcome of psychological issues. A separation may be the only sane choice. Sometimes a gentle approach, sometimes openness and wholehearted listening works - but sometimes it doesn't, given the differences in temperament and values. Nor is it necessarily even desirable to remain together. Sometimes the people can wind up being friends upon separation - in part, because they recognize that the separation has done them good. It depends on the situation and on the strength of love. So I'm in partial agreement with Thich: we may be too impatient and angry to try to save a relationship. But sometimes a change in circumstance is simply the outcome of clarity or of simply acknowledging our limitations. We may change our attitudes, but it doesn't necessarily follow that those around us will. They must also acknowledge THEIR OWN responsibility to themselves as we assume responsibility for our own lives.

"We may change our attitudes, but it doesn't necessarily follow that those around us will." ... if that is a source of suffering of any sort, I guess we haven't embraced large enough ... others are just the reflect of ourself and if we don't understand those illusionary outsiders, we suffer

The safire experiment proved the electrical nature of our sun . To do the right thing is to treat people equally. Like squares. An arc angle might be kind of important. Its important to care about something sometimes

People do want to know about life after dealth.
If the conscious mind still goes on or not. What to know or expect.
    Recieve unsight, wisdom and training.
Its part of the life and death process.
People suffer loss of many kinds. Loss of loved ones brings us to these questions.
Suffering of illnesses and death brings us to these questions.
So we do turn to other religions or ways of life to gain insight on these issues.
How to be a good person and have a good behavior should be taught in childhood through out the regular school system.
    Hard to transform broken adults.
Also, living on a compound and out in the real world where you have to make a living is hard to follow any religious concept because no one is on the same page.
You cannot reason with snakes and or the ignorant.
So that leaves a huge problem for much of the world.
Buddah was a rich hippie seeking to know life. He ran from his responsibilities yet was always protected and had the choice to ask home for anything. Just as many of the upper middle class/rich hippies did in the USA with their free love BS that tore at the traditional family unit even more.
Having options changes the game also. 😘
Thank you for posting this lecture as it is very much on point.
I have come into his teachings late but this stands to his legacy of teaching.
I hope Thich recovers and lives many great years to come. Recovers his voice to lecture again. Maybe we will see another great writing.
Best wishes and thank you for a life teaching personal responsibility and self empowerment.
Everyone live in peace, live and let live.
    Everything is within you.

Well, he speaks of remaining in a relationship and not divorce because you will only transfer what you have not resolved within yourself. I think that is what he is saying, but that can be very difficult if someone is in a very emotional and physical abusive relationship.
