  • Llangollen and Corwen Railway
First Day of Public Services to Corwen
    Saturday 3rd June 2023
Class 31 No 31271 “Stratford 1840-2001”, built in 1961 by Brush Traction at Loughborough and owned by A1A Locomotives Ltd, painted in 1980’s/90’s Railfreight Construction Sector livery, had the honour of hauling the first public passenger train into the new Corwen station. We see the locomotive at Llangollen station ahead of hauling the 10:30am service to Corwen on Saturday 3rd June 2023, before seeing it depart Corwen with the 11:45am Corwen to Llangollen service.
Freshly lined out Austin 1 (Kitson and Co. Works Number 5459, and worked for the Austin Motor Company, and delivered to the manufacturer’s Longbridge plant in 1932 to work alongside four other engines across their West and North Works) and Austerity 68067 (Hudswell Clarke Works Number 1752 Robert, carrying pseudo British Railways livery as a J94) double headed the first public steam service into Corwen, the 11:30am Llangollen - Corwen.
Austin 1 was the railways first steam locomotive and hauled the very first public trains on the line in 1981, and Austin 1 & Robert had hauled the official & member special trains opening the new Corwen station on 1st & 2nd June 2023.
At Berwyn the class 31 is seen returning up the bank.
A Hybrid Class 104 / 108 & Class Wickham 109 DMUs from Llangollen Railcars provided a third passenger set, seen returning into Berwyn from down below the Chain Bridge over the River Dee.
Also at Berwyn we see the Austerity, now alone on the 2:30pm Llangollen - Corwen.

Visiting from Australia, I travelled on this railway late last year. Now I have to do it again for the addition.
    Some beautiful, quality sequences.

It’d be amazing if the railway kept extending west into Bala and shared an exchange station with Bala Lake

Probably makes more economic sense to consolidate and build on what they have achieved so far. I think the facilities at Corwen are first class. Especially ease of parking which is a bit of nightmare at the Llangollen end of the line . The access for tourists will bring in extra business for the town, which would benefit the local economy. Corwen is a lovely historical town which needs to raise its profile. Like the correspondent below who passed by on his way along the A5 ..... that's the problem it's easy for tourists to drive on elsewhere. Up to now there is no eye catching signs for the presence of the new station in Corwen and the wonderful preserved railway with which it is connected. Let's hope things change?

@@kellyashfordtrains2642 Never is a negative word that I rarely like to use. When we started the railway during the early 70's onlookers told us that we did not stand a chance and they also told me that when I started my business 26 years ago, so I don't take any notice. But I do think right now that we need to concentrate on continuing the good work building back the railway to it's former glory and ensuring it has a secure future. I believe that if you are not moving forward then you are standing still and it's always positive to have a vision for the future which is something to aim for and maintain the public interest. In my view the thought of driving on to Bala would be very desirable, and an even more desirable thought would be to press on to join the Blaenau to Trawsfynydd Railway to achieve what would result in a remarkable scenic railway. There is also a bay platform laying empty at Ruabon which could still be another option. As always nothing gets done without active members and any increase would be good and help secure the future which ever way it may go.

Drove past here on the A5 many times and always wondered about the railway; so now it's great to see it reopened. I must stop there on my next trip. Beautiful countryside, The Mountains, River Dee, and now the railway to complete the picture. Let's hope the weather holds up.

Shame to see union flags in Corwen, or anywhere in Wales for that matter.
