A real treat! Thank you for having John Akinsonson as a guest. I always loved his reviews. the teaching he provided by way of measurements- along with the subjective observations he made of products under review, informed generations of readers.
Witty, articulate, technical, knowledgeable , impartial (....and quintessentially English). Alas John Atkinson represents a dying breed within the audiophile arena. Thanks for sharing.
Adrian, what a marvelous interview. I was hanging on each and every word from John and you provided excellent questions and knew when to shut up and allow John to speak as he wished. Just a great job.
Thanks for this series, what a great idea! I've followed John Atkinson with great respect since discovering HFN&RR while on honeymoon in Ireland in 1984. Later I remember thinking "what's going on here?" when I picked up a Stereophile and found him on the masthead! Listening to the lovely "Translations" now.
Many thanks for this video with John Atkinson. As I had been subscribing to Stereophile since inception, It was great to hear his life story! Solid state amp usually have very high gain and slew rate which if not well controlled feed back will have ringing and clipping resulting in odd harmonics which instruments would not normally generate. Tube amp would have lower slew rate and gain so overall less or no feedback.
Have long enjoyed Johns work... and of course any positive mention of legendary amplification and phono stage designer John Curl, goes down superbly, being a self confessed Parasound lover.. A21, A51 and now JC5 have all served my systems well.. Looking forward to the upcoming Stereophile review of the JC1+ by John Atkinson. Stay safe from London.
15:57 What B&W speakers did Atkinson say he still has and are in storage? It sounds like 7 Signatures but I'm not aware of just 7 Signature. 702 and 705 Signatures yes, but not that. I looked on B&W's website. Although you can see discontinued speakers going back to the Matrix series, there are no Signature models listed. There have been several Signature models offered including the 800, 805, and my more. Ahh! My GoogleFu skills to the rescue. Searching on John Atkinson B&W Signature review brought me to the B&W SILVER Signature review. www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/272/index.html
Total decline for two reasons and you don't have to be a genius to know this! First computers / cell phones / home theater / so many more things to do then what you could do in the mid-80s/ 90's! Reason number two $4,000 speaker cables people just are fed up with the rip-off prices but reason number one is more important. There are a lot more things to do than sit there in front of your $40,000 speakers! I myself much prefer listening to music videos with my giant OLED TV then I just do just sitting there randomly listening to music! That's why most Hi-Fi shops have turned into home theater shops, you don't need to be a genius to figure this out unfortunately! 🤪 hey, what would I rather have a typewriter or a word processor let me think that about that for a second, not! 🤪 That last 5 / 10% of audio quality means absolutely nothing to most people when you can get a good system if not a great system for under a couple of grand then throwing in a OLED TV and you're golden! There's a reason why Netflix is so popular and why Hi-Fi audio is in the decline not that I don't appreciate a good theater experience because I do, but yet I got one for under five grand tops with everything instead spending $30,000 for a pair of speakers which is ridiculous!🤪🤪🤪🤯🤯🤯 and I'm a guy that can throw $300,000 into speakers if I really wanted to it's totally waste of money for most people! Heck with this stupid stock market I could probably spend a million dollars on speakers I just would never spend that kind of money on speakers it's just ridiculous! hey, do I want to buy a Dan D'Agostino amp or a C8 Corvette let me think about that, not! It's only the people that are really tied up in the industry that are worried about these things otherwise people could care less! And yes if you worth 6,7,8 million dollars then you could do both and not worry about it but otherwise people are much more concerned about their home theater experience then staring at 2 speakers! And if you're worth that kind of money, you usually not always earned it and you never spend that much money staring at 2 speakers! I personally spend my money on travel which is quite obvious nit happening in the near future. Unless I start using set Jet which is a phenomenal company by the way! Either way when John Atkinson mentiond his kids aren't into hi-fi that's all I need to know!🤪🤪🤯🤯🤯🤯 fantastic and I do mean fantastic interview by the way but remember you're more invested in this Adrian and the rest of you then most people are!🙄🙄🙄🧐 And from what I can gather Adrian, this is just a hobby for you anyway so I don't feel that bad which is a good thing!😉😉😉😉🤗😇🤫🤫 long story short, home theater and yes Ultra high-end home theater is where it's at. Not staring at 2 speakers.🙄😳😕

Thanks for the album recommendations I'm going to listen right now, what else do I have to do!🤪🤪🤪🤓🤓🤫🤫🤗😇
Jay got all the action items.
Is there reason for moe and curly
On background? They just sit there?
Why are they there?
Ritual = foreplay
If I could of asked a question; I would of asked "where is your storage?"
