Probably somewhat in character. She definitely acted like they were Fran Fine and Max, like when she referred to it taking five years to get him in bed. For someone who didn't know the show, that would end up sounding like she had a relationship with Shaughnessy.
So maybe Fran Drescher is in some ways different from Fran Fine? There was joke in the show with Fran asking Max, "Can I talk to you for a minute?" And Max actually replied, "I doubt it." Over the years, he'd learned something from Niles (i.e., wit).

I love The Nanny series. I have seen all the episodes so many times. Whenever I am feeling blue, bored or just want to see some good comedy entertainment, The Nanny is my first choice. And I'd like to also mention the wonderful older women who played in this series, (Sylvia and Yedi) and Niles-he is an excellent actor (especially since he isn't British at all).
