Thank you for making philosophy accessible and less opaque. I am trying to understand Spivak's text for my literary theory class and it was almost impossible for me to do so. This background information and your explanation with the white board helps immensely. Thank you again for your work !
Dr. Campbell I think these videos definitely warrant a gigantic thank-you. I've been trying to get my heard around Spivak's article for a while, and your videos have helped immensely. You are a very generous person to post these lectures on youtube for everyone to learn from. Thank you so much. I hope you continue to educate the masses through social media!
Thanks Jason, I wish my professor had done this. Very clear. Reading/listening to Spivak is not easy (although I congratulate her beautiful speech manners), and you've explained very important concepts in a way that makes total sense when we're not familiar with her theory and its background. Thanks again!
Thanks for your clear explanation from 4:12 to 4:52 which helps me understand what Spivak's claim "No one can say 'I am a subaltern' in whatever language" means.
Thank you Dr. Campbell for this video. It's intelligent yet easy to understand. One quick question: By Spivak talking about the subaltern (though in a general way), is the subaltern finally getting that "voice" they needed? Has Spivak's seminal analysis finally opened the door for redefining western imperialistic intellectualism and thereby elevating the subaltern to the status of the oppressed?
Revisionist history is when an oppressed person is given the opportunity to be rewritten into history. The subaltern lack recognition and cannot contribute to revisionist history. The subaltern and oppressed are not interchangeable terms. All subaltern are oppressed but not all oppressed are subaltern.

2:49 "I'd rather just give a lecture because then everybody gets smarter." You're the real MVP.

Do you think the "Slave" in the Frank B. Wilderson or Jarrod Sexton sense is lower than the subaltern?
Pleeeease do the philosophical history of ideas for 'I'. That would be amazing
