DIY Printed Holographic Display (Lenticular Optics Explained)

  • This project demonstrated how basic display can be converted to display stereoscopic images that don't require any extra glasses. A simple lenticular lens can be 3D Printed using a resin based printer and placed on top the display. Several images are interleaved but only one is visible from a each viewing angle. Since the eyes look from different angles two different images can be displayed creating a stereoscopic image.

    I'm stunned this isn't more popular - I saw this on advertising screens in Thailand over 20 years ago - they all had crowds standing staring at LCD monitors with the lenticular 3D effect and I saw into the future... then nothing!? Great that you're giving it a kick-start to reinvigorate the space!!

      Yep.... I first saw one of those Lenticular 3D screens in a Carrefour supermarket on a visit to France way back in 2004. Blew me away that here was this magic technology in a supermarket of all places.

      Sounds like you're referring to EyeFly3D by Nanovue based out of Singapore. Their products can still be found through online retailers. Mopic is a similar product from Korea.

    Used to love those holographic images as a kid. Back then they were just fun to look at, now they are interesting because of the technology that makes them work.

    In the far past I owned a HTC Evo 3D mobile phone. This phone was able to record videos in stereo an play them back in 3D as well 😎 The display showed no sign of fresnel lenses or any optical assistant. I was blown away by the image quality and still feel sorry this technique was not developed further. Really nice to see a diy comeback attempt 👍😊

      I believe that phone used a Parallax barrier, like the 3DS, which gives less blurring and distortion than lenticular lenses

    Being that the pixel pitch or size needs to be larger, I'd recommend trying this on a large 70" 4k UHDTV.

      Yes and nope. The viewing angle is critical on such a screen, you have to watch vertically to the screen. and on a huge screen, the corners are at an angle to you, so you will have to tune it to focus at a certain distance and if you move your head or even eyeballs slightly, the results get bad. I have commented about my friend's solution, If you wanna find out just read it

      @@yuxuanhuang3523 replying to an old comment, but do you have a link to that solution? I'm investigating use of similar tech for 3D pinball and the viewing angle is going to be an issue. I'm guessing that the pixels alignment could be modified on the fly by tracking the users head and adjusting alignment accordingly.

      ​@@Fontgod Actually I have a friend doing exactly this. The results are really good, they only need two images interlaced for wherever your eyes are relative to the screen. I have already gamed on a demo modified laptop and a huge 8K TV a few years back and they are both really 3D. They seem to be releasing the first commercially available display sometime next year.

      @@yuxuanhuang3523 That's really exciting to hear that they may be released next year. Are they going to be consumer grade or commercial? There is a reasonable potential market in producing an autostereoscopic screen for digital pinball cabinets but the issue is that the technology will need to work with the screen positioned in vertical/portrait orientation and placed on it's back at about a 10-15 degree angle (so at the same position as the glass on a real mechanical pinball table). I suspect that most autostereoscopic screens will be used in landscape orientation however there is also vertical orientation need for advertising stands. If your friend has any influence with the company then please mention to them the need for a mid sized portrait orientation screen solution of around the 42" - 43" diagonal size as this is the preferred size for virtual pinball (which most closely matches a real pinball machine size). Many virtual pinball machine cabinet users make their pinball cabinets themselves although there would also probably be an interest from commercial pinball manufacturers once they get a look at what the technology can do.

    Fantastic idea printing 3D lenticular lenses. Especially with the market shortage we are experiencing these few years.
    I've seen a hand made 3D device, made from a tablet, few years back which was made with industrial purchased lenses. The main trick was to remove away the screen glass that protects the display and glue the lens directly on the display.
    You do not need the pixel resolution of the display to be an exact multiple of the lens pitch. If you interlace it properly and take this difference into account you can use industrial purchases lenses. The secret is blending the pixels that fall between the lenses.

    Love it! Quite impressive - would never have guessed a printed lens would work so well!
    My family has been into 3D photography since the 50's - have 2 leather-wrapped cardboard boxes of the dual slides from my father's trips, and a bakelite viewer (finally replaced the feeble 3v incandescent flashlight bulb with an LED when it burned out last year 😂). Also have a Fuji W3D camera (from ~2009), a 3D Samsung TV I use as a monitor, and an Epson 3010 3D projector (both need glasses).
    Glad to see interest is still out there - seems to come back into vogue every 20 years or so!

    For some reason I was reminded of BOKODE by MIT. It used the Bokeh effect to allow a camera to focus on a microprinted image similar to an AR tag. You could then track the relative position, distance, and angle between tag and camera. It was kinda neat in that it was device-agnostic. You could either track stationary tags, or use a stationary camera to track multiple moving tags. Neat stuff for 2009.
    Why did I think of it? I imagined a progressive series of QR codes or AR tags sitting behind a lenticular lens on a surface. The big barrier to BOKODE was the fact that each tag needed you to have access to mirofiche-equivalent printing to manufacture. I'm guessing something could be done with a high-resolution laser printer and textured polystyrene sheets (AKA Shrinky Dinks), but it wouldn't be nearly as simple or likely to work as a position-dependent tag whose lenses you can print.

      They don't use a lenticular lens but an extra LCD layer with adjustable vertical lines. The lines are very thin and form slits that act similar to lenticular lenses

    Nice work! My recommendation is to try a WhamBam style flex plate on your build plate. No need to use a knife, you'll do less damage to the underside of your lens.

    Hah! You are on the path to bring the HTC Evo 3D screen to every phone! Very interesting work, although (as said phone demonstrated back in 2011) its real world applications are somewhat limited. Still, being able to do such a thing at home with affordable hardware and materials is amazing for a whole number of reasons, not to mention it was unthinkable back then.

    To make the 3D printed parts more transparent you should get some enamel resin/Varnish and put the cured resin part in it .Gives you glass like finish

    I worked with this tech in a professional context +30 years ago, we were producing poster sized work from photography and computer graphics that was imaged onto film using a QCR film recorder. The lens sheet is the most critical part and although 3D printers are an awesome tool for prototyping and proof-of-concept these days you still need to source optical grade film in the end. I can't think of any way around that other than making your own laser etched hot roller to process continuous rolls of a suitable film.

    That concept is actually why I was interested in your video! I was given a fake bill unknowingly and got home and realised it very quickly! As I could not do anything with this I still have it, but as an amiture engineer and scientific mad man I quickly started thinking of ways it could be made better and I think 3d printing a Fresno wins over the strip right onto the money itself and news 3D print the Braille I think sent counterfeit could beat dreamly credible I think the FBI could benefit from knowing this knowledge

    I love how you try printing lenses, I never thought of that though I did have a printer until I fried the motherboard.
    Actually my friend is a engineer working in a company producing 3D displays, he invited me to visit his lab once and you can't imagine how life-like a 70 inch 8K 3D display looks(effective resolution per eye above 4K). I even gamed on a modified laptop and viewed Rhino (the CAD software) on a 27 inch monitor. I could see how this is coming to the market soon.
    p.s. He told me some details about his displays. They have patented this so I think it is okay to say how it works. They don't display multiple angles nor do they tune their lenses so slightly off center you can see two different images. Because it will not work on anything bigger than a phone. Instead they have a custom FPGA that tracks eye movements and projects two frames onto the correct pixels real-time, so even if you move your head around, the image will be perfect.

    You realise you could make a lot of money working with one of the smart phone manufacturers to have this built into their product. You’ve showed it works and what’s required. Just a shim in the display software and your lens glued to the screen. Can’t wait to get one.

    Amazing, a little recommendation, make the same process, but in a 5 or 7 inch display, and put the lenses with resin in the glass, eliminate all space between. Regards from Argentina

    I believe those sheets are made by forcing mold onto a sheet, like pressing with patterned roller or something. That way the issues around flatness is passed along to sheet making process

    I'd love to see circular lenses with larger triangles (so they can be cured right when they come out if the printer without washing and are more transparent as a result) for high power LEDs.

    I miss when I was a child and we had magazines with those 2 angle "tech", disk interactive magazines, pop-up magazines, the paper red/blue(anaglyph) glasses to see the posters, and there was even a natgeo magazine with holographic cover of the *globe* and we didn't had that much flatearthers!

    Maybe you can try combining wiggle stereography on top of the lenticular lenses to have 3D on "still" images as well!

    I still have my HTC EVO 3D. It has a different method for 3D, basically another LCD layer with vertical lines but the end result is the same. However, if I run all the software updates, after a while the flash is full :(
