  • Now working on climate engineering, Salter has pioneered a method of marine cloud brightening - wherein a fleet of vessels would spray a very fine mist of water into the air, help to bounce sunlight back into space, and thus mitigate the effects of increasing global temperatures due to climate change.
Professor Salter is Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design at Edinburgh University. Internationally renowned for his pragmatic approach to modern global challenges, he has been solving the world's major problems since 1974 when he invented the Edinburgh Duck, a potential solution to the Oil Crisis and the world's energy needs.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Fun fact: energy requirements to pump that much water is 1/5th of power produced by small nuclear power plant

Fun fact: small sized thorium reactors, solar or wind can produce this energy too

Wouldn’t simply spraying salt water into the clouds (albeit a simple non toxic idea) pollute our fresh water supply by adding salt into the clouds??? I would really appreciate a reply I cannot find a way to contact any other geoengineers or climate scientists. Thank you in advance

The salt isn't sprayed over land but ocean water. The use of ships should have made that clear. The amounts are less than that used to clear city streets of ice and snow.

If you listen at 13:44 the water is filtered and desaltet before it is sprayed into the atmosphere

No, the total salt sprayed is so small that the increase in the salinity would be negligible.
The salt is there only to create reflection and nucleation the total amount is not relevant relative to rain amount

It's June 2021 and ice didn't follow that simplistic (based on no ice physics) extrapolation at 2:31. Followed much more closely an extrapolation of 2010-2014 only, which is essentially horizontal, no change.

The trajectory of the projection is 2027 for a blue ocean event / ice-free summer in the Arctic. Where is he wrong?
You aren't even taking into account the serious drop in Arctic sea ice density that's nearly as important as Arctic sea ice mass.

Even if the Blue Arctic Ocean Event happens in 2050 this is less than an eye blink in geological time.

Guess what? We've been emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, MANIPULATING THE WEATHER, for well over 100 years. With catastrophic results. Engage brain and think about this. shooting water vapor into the atmosphere to make short term clouds to reflect heat back to space and away from the oceans is sensible. Doubt we'll do it because that would mean people would have to actually use their brains but it would be a pleasant change.

Ocean water is salty and spraying our atmosphere is crazy drought and wildfire will overwhelm everything and flash floods. Yeah great we got brighter clouds. Australia more wildfire USA California/Oregon/Washington wildfire related to these brightening technics. Why not spraying direct salt water particals over forests?

    • @johnbows2555
      @johnbows2555 3 года назад +3

We're already overwhelmed. Our forests are dying. Western U.S. and Canada are now in mega-drought scenarios. Arctic ice is spiraling downward to negligible levels. Oceanic oxygen sources like the Great Barrier Reef are bleaching to the point where the ocean will turn anaerobic rather than aerobic. We don't have the luxury for 50 years of cautious research and testing. We are late in the game, and there's no excuse for us not to deploy solar energy management operations within the next few years with the best continuous monitoring, testing, and analysis that we can provide before we hit the 2032 barrier.

Indonesia use salt seeding to put out their forest fires...then a few months later Oz burned all upnand down the east coast...we just stood back and let it burn

@@lunde28 So these ships that blow ocean water into the air filter the ocean water so the salt stays out and white clouds form. That's nonsense this method would be even better than the best de-salting plant. with what energy are the ships operated, etc. would that solve the drinking water problem? The citizens are being duped into using the very drastic methods and a few are making money from it. Anyone who promises to be in control of a chaotic system like the weather will quickly be disappointed.

I guess if your name is 'Salter' .. then this is your contribution to the solution for climate change :-)
