  • I've always wanted to have an exotic butterfly collection. however purchasing individual mounted and framed butterflies can get pricey at around $65 per framed butterfly. So I did some research on how to make my own for a fraction of the cost and I'm going to show you how.
    In this video I'll show you how I soften the butterflies to be mount and pinned. I'll also show you how I made the double sided shadow box frames and even how to cut the glass for the frames. I'll share my tips and trick that I've learned along the way. I came up with a smart way to easily hang the framed butterflies once they were completed, and i'll show you how.
    I purchase my unmounted butterflies on ebay ranging from $6-$10ea.

    Little extra tip (at least for people in Europe I don't know how it is in the US): You can buy butterfly cocoons for 3-4 € each. Like the beautiful blue morpho. They come from butterfly farms where they are being bred for zoos and butterfly gardens. That way you have a beautiful butterfly (if you want to give it the care) and after his life ends you can pin him if you want.

    My grandparents travelled all over the world doing missionary work. My grandmother collected butterflies from each location! When she passed away my mom gave me the collection which i have ALWAYS loved. I wanted to mount them but didn't know how. THANKS for sharing your process - tips were helpful and your wall looks AMAZING!!

      I make these, but it depends, you can easily but one of these frames, then you can easily cut some card to the size of the frame, and hot glue them , I think she focused too much on the frames,and not the butterflies since she didn’t move the wings.

    I recommend NOT using super glue. Elmers glue that dries clear is better. Using the back of the sewing pin to apply to the bug will make it adjustable with some water if you have to. Another point is if you want to donate them to a museum or something later, super glue and hot glue will damage the animals so much. Use a water soluble glue. Museums use Fish glue for their mounting because it’s always removable and does no damage to the bug.

    If you plan on starting your own butterfly collection, please do research first on which species are endangered and which are not. Fox example: common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is endagered in many parts of Europe as is the common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus). Avoid green swallowtails (Papilo blumei) since they're often collected illegally from national parks.
    Edit: as far as I can see, no endangered species were used in this video

    • @vettedwarrior7054
      @vettedwarrior7054 4 года назад +22

      Just because it is Uncommon or Endangered in your area does not mean it is in other areas, The United states is home to the common yellow swallowtail and they are NOT!! listed as an endangered species. The common blue is NOT endangered , It has decline in some areas while showing up in new ones ( Quebec Canada) and widespread in the british isles. And adding in don't collect a species because you THINK it might be collected Illegally is a dumb thing to say. I have collected for 45 years and never heard such BS from a fellow collector.

      Not to mention importing wildlife from foreign countries is illegal without CITES documentation. This can be tantamount to smuggling ivory, panda parts, and rhino horn if they are appendix 1 species. Honestly, I think it is weird that people keep collections of dead animals in this day and age. It would be different if you're a taxonomist. That said, my dad had a chess board with butterfly wings in different angles for the squares and it was very beautiful. If I ever decide to breed moths or butterflies in our greenhouse, I might do something like that when they die naturally.

      @missanna208802 3 года назад +3

      @@vettedwarrior7054 in addition to my other comment, checking the IUCN red list would be a good idea, though sometimes data is insufficient, so some species could be endangered but they don't know. What I will say about this entire hobby is that I dont think it is a good idea now that we are in the 6th mass extinction and especially because insect populations worldwide are plummeting. There is literally an insect apocalypse going on right now, and since monarchs are present in many countires and even in hawaii, the best thing to do to enjoy the butterflies is create habitat for them, learning about the diseases they carry, and, if they are a migratory population, not attempting to rear the migrating generation indoors. There were two studies about this in 2018 or 2019 and 2020 where even wild eggs raised in captivity in greenhouses and south facing windows failed to fly south. Also only plant the milkweed species that are native to your area, as some are making the OE pandemic worse.
