"Visions of Johanna" is one of the absolute greatest. Some of the best writing ever.
In the city where I live, there's a fairly popular art museum that would do free admission on the first Friday of the month (before Covid). I used to like looking at a painting for a little it and then saying to no one in particular, "This is what salvation must be like after a while." Nobody ever seemed to get the reference. Bah.
@@frigginjerk "salvation" line is the best of the whole song brother
Definitely!

Love that Bruce is such an enthusiastic music fan, let alone being The Boss.
I'd be honored if some Springsteen fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance DANCING IN THE DARK on my YT channel in tribute to the continuing relevance of this legendary American classic. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and vote 'D' for Decency on Nov. 3rd.
So was Petty. I just don't want him to be forgotten. I think if you don't listen to the richness of other voices in music and words you can't achieve the caliber of artistry these guys did.
“Visions of Johanna”. Remains my favourite song of all time. Blows me away every time.
Agreed. Going to listen now in fact. Well, after this video.
Good choice ,When I paint my masterpiece is mine
Absolutely! And the version from Cardiff is the best I’ve ever heard. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowland and Up To Me are my favorite BD tunes, but Visions of Johanna is is definitely top 5
Blonde on Blonde is a masterpiece.

Here's Derry Dylanger's cover of Visions of Johanna!
Bruce has got it all - great musician, great songwriter, great lyricist & great singer. But somehow he never takes himself too seriously. Utterly unique.
Not exactly unique. There are other music icons who belong in the Pantheon alongside Bruce. But The Boss is one of the most brilliant.
Mr. Springsteen has such a way with words. Could listen to him talk, let along sing for hours on end.
God Bruce is like a fine wine, and just keeps getting better. He's an absolute national treasure we're lucky to have during these times.
We can expect more, after all BB King kept on maturing till the end. Keef also and many more.
3rd.
Amen!
Am I correct, Bruce's face looks a bit different since I last saw him, which is about two yrs ago. A facelift, or botox ?
Well said..
Bruce was a good friend to Warren Zevon and helped Warren finish his last album when he was getting too weak. Bruce drove through a storm to Warren's house on Christmas eve to help him out on the last song. So freaking sweet. He also does Warren songs in his concerts.... so that's why I love Bruce.
What Zevon songs has Bruce covered??
@@markvaught672 my rides here right after Warren died at very least
@@markvaught672 Springsteen also co-wrote Jenny Needs A Shooter with Warren
@@billbitterman9487 I love that song.. my favorite is still Lawyers,Guns and Money lol.
Lana Del Rey is just wonderful. Love NFR as well as everything else. Listen all the way through. But, I play vinyl so have you do that for all the records I own!
I like his analogy of a band being like a ship. Very true. And his bit about the car with "all the yous" is the best description of life experience. A smart man, and a great story teller. I think he qualifies for Dolly Parton's title of "Storyteller".
I love how starstruck Stephen is when he interviews musicians.
Interesting observation! Never thought about it. Charlie Rose turned into mush when interviewing media celebs which was a black mark against him in my books; I think Stephen in a healthy way is just a big fan which is great.
Not when he interviewed Eminem, he was an unfunny dick to Marshal .
The greatest is really one of the best songs ever made.
Damn! So humble and so on target. Both.
Blood on the Tracks is the greater Americana. Such good stuff.
I agree. I love the divorce albums. Raw emotions come through.
My favorite Dylan album too, Tangled Up In Blue.
@@mikefannon6994 lot's of great stuff on that album. But yes, that is a special one.
Blood on the Tracks is a masterpiece, for sure 🔥
One day you"ll be in the ditch flies buzzing around your eyes blood on your saddle. IDIOT WIND. But I love all DYLAN
"don't look back it's alright". It's alright Ma, it's life and life only.
Cassette tape in car as a kid , Born to run ,to many years ago to say ,thankyou Bruce ,cheers mate,
I had just turned 13 and was beginning to be able to scrape up enough money to start buying albums instead of 45's the summer Born to Run was released. It was one of my very first purchases and I bought it on the strength of the title track. The rest, needless to say, did not disappoint.

Still in my car...2001Neon! Love that I can listen to my 80s music again!

I love you Bruce Springsteen! You are an American Treasure.
"Thunder Road" was the greatest song ever written. Thank you Bruce and good to see you.
My choices: Blowin in the Wind, The Times They Are A'changin, If You See Her Say Hello, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, It's Ain't Me Babe, Love Minus Zero, One More Cup of Coffee, All Along The Watch Tower, The Hurricane, Shelter From The Storm, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, and Jokerman.

Simple Twist of Fate!
Imagine you knew nothing about Bruce Springsteen, never heard a single song. You just see this amazing, beautiful human being. But later, in your head, out of nowhere, melodies and words arise. And then you hear Thunderroad or State Trooper for the first time. And it all makes sense. With eyes wide open, humble, through his mind and voice the spirit of music is alive for all of us.
I love how excited stephan was to talk about greatest and bruce looks amazing and charming
Just rediscovered Born to Run. The man is Legend.
Speaking of Dylan lyrics, one line that I've thought about this past year is from "Sweetheart Like You". "Patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings." It reminds me of a certain someone we all know.
Steal a little and they throw you in jail. Steal a lot and they make you a king.
@@gaudphree841 bingo
The originator of that quote is none other than Samuel Johnson: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel!"....from the year 1760!
My mom and dad had a ritual, every night my dad would turn the light off and they’d listen to “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” on the record player.
My favorite Bob Dylan song isn’t well known, it’s “To Ramona”. It helped me with so many events and relationships in my life. I love all his music though.
The Ballard off franky lee and judus preast
My favorite Dylan line: "A Cadillac is a good car to drive after a war."
Hello how are you doing today..👋
I definitely listened to this as an album, I’ve been working to it the last two days. Love it. How lucky are we that one of the few enduring icons of music left to us still has things to say?
There's about 50 Dylan songs in his top ten.
Mine too.
@@wanderinggeri8477 only 50?
Yes, trying to name your top three Dylan songs becomes about twenty or so as number one before moving on to the number two song. LOL!
Love this; "All of the you's are in the car." Bruce has accrued wisdom along his singular journey.
True statement. As a PhD candidate I had to write my professional statement. It was a homage to Bruce. I heard Jungle Land as a kid, and it made such an impact. I have never stopped loving Bruce. His words, and his music are true poetry. Bruce is such a word smith and poet and being a literacy major, I truly appreciate his genius. Thanks Bruce for being you.
Tangled up in blue. One of the greatest songs ever written. How didn't they remember that?
I was waiting for something off of Blood on the Tracks!
Rumoured, that Dylan wrote “Tangled up in blue” after listening to and being so impressed by Joni Mitchell’s album Blue.✌️
that's the beauty of music. Or art in general. Different folks, different tastes. Can't argue taste.
Absolutely
Criminal omission
Wow "Ring them Bells" gives me chills. I did not expect that song to be mentioned. It's definitely one of my favorites too.
2:35 "all of those folks are in the car that your driving.. a lot of it depends on who's at the wheel" Bruce's truisms never fail to floor me....
This was a great interview. Bruce does sooo many but you can clearly see when he enjoys them. No same ol questions in this one. Nicely done!
My top three Dylan songs are:
- It's Not Dark Yet
- Girl From The North Country
- The Times They Are A Changin'
Not dark yet...mississippi...dignity
Boots of Spanish Leather, Tangled Up in Blue, Hurricane.
Agree with you on “Not Dark Yet” mate!!!
Subterranean Homesick Blues, Tangled Up in Blue, and --- I cant decide.
Ain't talking, Key West, Simple twist of fate.
i think those songs he wrote in early 70's were his best, funny how he says he is sorry he abandoned it so soon
Love his metaphor - having himself in a car - the 23 year old, the 40 year old, and all versions of himself - and having the 70 year old now giving voice to all of his selves. Not bragging but I was named after visions of Johanna. 💕
First, seeing John B. at the beginning or end of a video always makes me smile. He is truly a joyous human being. Second, I don't always love celebrity interviews. Maybe not popular to say, but it's true. I LOVED your interview with Bruce Springsteen. It was great. (So was Dolly Parton)
Hello how are you doing today
Listening to records from start to finish...a dying art for sure.
Letter to You is DEFINITELY a great listen from start to finish! Quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Bruce Springsteen's career spans six continuous decades! Just amazing!
Dylan's is 11 years longer
Subterranean Homesick Blues was the first music video. I love that song and so many others. I can't believe they still tour. Amazing.
I think the fact that is isn't common to listen to an album all the way through anymore is a big part of why contemporary pop music is so shitty now.
Cheers to you, man, and long live physical media. 🍻🎧
So right...listening to a vinyl album, especially when you'd just got it from a record store, was an event! While it was playing you'd read the liner notes, look at the album art! It was the whole package .... nowadays you have "playlists" on your phone that fill the background... some of the magic is gone
Yeah I totally agree. Hadn’t thought of that but yes.
I still do. Long live albums.
Or, maybe it’s because most pop music is so shi**y anymore that’s a big problem for why we don’t listen to an entire album???
Great interview between two legends! I’ve seen Bruce more than 25 times. Each time was an enlightening and energising experience. Really looking forward to hearing those songs he wrote years ago
Two legends? Colbert went out of his way to encourage COVID vaccines...and shamed those who stayed unvaccinated...Steven, why did you do that? Are you so clueless about the medical industrial complex? 3 Noble Prize winners supported the policy of staying unvaccinated...he has no business being in the company of Springsteen...
Colbert a legend on a par with Bruce? Colbert is a puppet , does and says what he is told, like shaming people who refused to take an experimental harmful "vaccine".....Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, Tommy Smothers yes THEY are legends....But Colbert? He should not be allowed to shine Bruce's shoes.
I can not believe he is 71 years old. He looks amazing!
He's never smoked or taken any drugs. Probably hasn't drank in fifty years.
I am sort of glad you wrote that because I think he looks frail in the same way my Dad looked in his early '80s before congestive heart failure, which he survived. So perhaps my imagination.
@@bradleybrown8399 In his autobiography, he said that he didn't have his first drink until he was 23 or so. But, he does like to drink.
Bruce had a hair transplant around about the "Devils & Dust" period. He has also had some minor plastic surgery procedures. But he looks great.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl really? I'd like to read his autobiography. I didn't realize that. I'm pretty certain about the no drugs and smoking though, is that true?
Okay Dylan’s Highway 61 has to be the best opening verse of any song ever:
“God said to Abraham, kill me a son...
Abe says man you must be putting me on...
God says no Abe says what...
God says you can do what you want to,
but the next time you see me coming you better run...
Abe says where you want this killin’ done...
God says out on highway 61”
Everything that’s wrong with the world in one verse...incredible!
It always makes me laugh thinking of how the dialogue with play out and real life, Abe yelling at the sky and all
My dad says it's his favorite album ever. It is a good one.
If a RUclips poster says so, then it must be true.
You are right on. Been saying this for years. Those seven lines are not only scary but sums up Bob's unbelievably talent
"to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea"
circled by the circus sands, with all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
My favorite verse from that song!
No question Dylan is the consummate surrealist poet. Mr Tamborine Man taken up by The Byrds has to be part of our public shared musical landmarks. He has inspired so many great artists justifiably, but he's not God and had some seriously shitty periods and I would hate to have him for a father, don't know how Jacob Dylan turned out to be such a sane brilliant musician In His Own Write to quote John .Lennon.
Bruce Springsteen is one of the few people that can laugh without moving his face! 🤘
Botox possibly?
@@david-pb4bi it looks like his skin is pulled back. ..a facelift I think.

Bruce i was never a great fan but he is a real guy, gotta love him
That's ok -- I hate posts where the comments are all fanatical supporters, like Jordan Peterson where you get bumped off with a hint of criticism. Really appreciate your comment. No-one is perfect; I was very moved by The Kennedy Center Honours for Bruce when he sat beside Michelle Obama and was totally overwhelmed; very human. I know he celebrates 50 yrs of his group but heh he put out way more single albums than Tom Petty who I keep bringing up who truly would have been bereft without a band even during the Jeff Lynne period. I am not convinced Springsteen was as attached as Tom but that's life.
"I try my best to be just like I am
But everyone wants you to be just like them"
My top 3 Springsteen songs #1 Youngstown ( about my home town ) #2 Born in the U.S.A. #3 Glory Days.
Bruce is a very intelligent person. I hope he and his entire crew and Roadies live well and peaceful lives. Thank you Bruce

Greetings from Asbury park. I got my record in Australia imported from Seattle when I was 14. It's hard to be a saint in the city bent my brain.
Whoohoo yes!
"The answer is blowin' in the wind."
I would think Desolation Row would have been one. Bruce’s darkness at the edge of town, racing in the streets and his other songs about America’s challenges

Here is a forgotten Dylan song, so moving and sung with such tenderness:
BALLAD IN PLAIN D !
Dylan says he was a schmuck for writing it.
@@Chapps1941 yeah as you may know Dylan says a lot of things...John Lennon said Abbey Road was junk...Brahms tore up an entire symphony...and came close to doing the same for his piano concerto in D minor...what a loss that would have been!

YOU are ONE heck of a conduit there Mr. Bruce Springsteen receiver transmitter!
I see THE RISING!!!
I thank Our Creator for YOU, your connection with the BOSS!!!
Has seen M3 through some mighty dark times to where NOW I FEEL THE LIGHT, I FEEL THE LOVE, AND SEE THE RISING!!! It brought M3 to my knees when I first heard it, first time in April of this year. When YOU were finished, I made a vow to get up from my knees and STAND for the ONE that sent YOU, AWESOME ✌🙏🏿🙏🏼🙏🏽❤🖤💙
Love this!! My favourite line is "The bridge at midnight trembles / The country doctor rambles..."
Good grief, this man will ALWAYS be a true Poet Laureate of the USA & World... the re-tracking of “If I Were A Priest” on the new album is one of his Top 10 best songs. 🔥🤟🏼
Bruce is so relaxed and flowing now, remember when getting words out of Springsteen was an awkward tooth extraction.
Imagine Lana making Bruce references in her songs as a fan, and now Bruce is talking about her! Wow.
Pretty cool 😎
What is a Lana?
Great interview! Should've asked him about rough and rowdy ways! A legend speaking on another legend.
"You've got a lotta nerve. To say you are my friend." - My favorite Dylan opener.
That song's loaded with good lines. "I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes-- you'd know what a drag it is to see you."

Hey Bruce, it's nice to reconnect with you and your music. I have many many great stories about hearing and even playing your music. One day in 1979, I was hanging out with some friends on the balcony across the street. There was a real heavy rainstorm presence in the area around Calgary but we were sheltered with a roof and comfortable. A friend and I were singing Born to Run and really hitting it up. We were approaching the climax of the refrain, "Baby we were born to . . . " and there was a monstrous bolt of lightning right there and then so we couldn't hear ourselves sing "RUN!" It was a magical gift as is your music. Thank you. Come up to Vancouver when isolation settles down.
I listen to whole albums over and over - Dylan and Queen mostly.
Good choice. I re-read books over and over again, listen to music -- have an acquaintance who doesn't get it their loss!!
His voice attracts others. Blend together.
Finally get Bruce with an interviewer and it's this guy...Bruce still shines
The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle must be listened to from beginning to end. It's not just an album. It's a song cycle.
Love his laugh! Keeps me strong! I do my exercises to "Born to run"!!
My 3 favourites

The slowed down, NYC version of Idiot Wind is something else man. So incredibly beautiful
I'm sure your top 3 has rotated a few times since your original comment
Changing of the Guards
Chimes of Freedom
When the Ship Comes In
A couple of my favs..."when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose"....and "you can't win with a losing hand". Nobody, I mean nobody better than Dylan.
Nobody …of course no body …
Springsteen:
- Like a Rolling Stone
- Visions of Johanna
- Ring That Bell
My picks:
- It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
- I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)
- Mr Tambourine Man maybe? I was going to put another song here, until Stephen mentioned the lyric from this song and it reminded my how excellent his poetry was in that period.
Desolation Row, Girl from the North Country, Ballad of Hollis Brown, Ballad of a Thin Man, Simple Twist of Fate and Shelter from the Storm for me
The last album I listened to all the way through was Nebraska. The story that weaves its way through that album I never tire of listening to.
Best Dylan story is 'Black Diamond Bay' on the Desire album.
I adore that song! In fact I adore that whole album. The only two Dylan albums that probably surpass it for me are Blood on the Tracks and Blonde on Blonde. Bringing it all Back Home is also really high on the list.
Best lines:
As the mornin’ light breaks open, the Greek comes down
And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write
“Pardon, monsieur,” the desk clerk says
Carefully removes his fez
“Am I hearin’ you right?”
Nice. Bruce. Like always, eloquent as ever.
My line is: “the harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain / and these visions of Johanna are now all that remain”
I would have to pick the "hurricane" as my favorite Dylan song, I imagine Bruce would approve ? I feel like I have known Bruce since my 1970s HS days. He's important to me, no other way to put it.
Well it would tie in with their shared political conscience, so yeah. I also grew up with his music since the '70s so I get it; just don't want to one of those guys who say to people who have just discovered something, well I was there at the beginning so I have special rights which in no way are you saying at all! Great comment.
First Dylan line that comes to me: "If today, was not an endless highway" ("Tomorrow is a long time" -- but only the Elvis-sung version).
Inspired by the Odetta version

I love the Born to run anniversary story
I think Bruce's description of your life as a car containing all the previous versions of you is very true. As someone who is 2 years older than Bruce, I recognise the analogy and the fact that sometimes it's the earlier version who's driving. This is especially bad when my early 30s incarnation is at the wheel. I wasn't very pleasant then. Age tells you that you might give that person some slack.
I am only 64 but I get your great comment!
'Changing of the Guard' ...Love Minus Zero/No Limit...that's mine
So many amazing songs, impossible to just choose three, but I'll say Just like Tom Thumb's Blues, Sign on the Window, and Going to Acapulco.
Name your favourite Bob Dylan anything: impossible.
Mr Tambourine Man, It's alright Ma, My Back Pages, Like a rolling stone. Love the line "a self ordained professors' tongue to serious to fool" reminds me of many professors I had - but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now.
Top 3 Bruce songs:
Thunder Road
10th Ave Freeze Out
The River
You gave me shivers. I think I agree!!!!!!
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky ,with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea.
