Man I love your reviews! Im not buying anything without a replaceable battery ever again. Even with a good warranty on the battery, it's too much trouble sending a unit into warranty after spending time arguing with the warranty customer service (looking at you RODE). Too many bad batteries, wasted time, and time without the product you paid for.
I guess the chances of such devices using the same battery is minimal, especially when so tiny. And if the company has to offer spare batteries for customers to fit themselves, then they have to make and store them to meet worst-case-scenario needs, and of course the manufacture would need to be phased so that they didn't die of old age before being sent out. So one way or another, the environmental effect of making more batteries than needed might not be good, and you can bet the supplier would up the cost of the device to cover the wastage. So while the whole concept is well intentioned, in reality it's debatable in terms of real benefit. Maybe.
Very nice review as always Philip, never seen such a wide selection of products. All other channes just compare 1vs1, lovely to get the whole scene in just one Video. Im missing the new Sennheiser Profile Wireless, seems like a very nice system.
I don't need a mic. I turned this on as entertainment while I'm cooking and still learned something - of you can 'see' the sound, it's more conspicuous. Thanks for the great content.
Great overview and breakdown of what each microphone is good at! Too bad there isn’t “one to rule them all”, however in a few years that hopefully changes! I hope your life is making a turn for the better, we all go though rough times, just know that there are people who care about you even if they only know you as “the video drone cat man on RUclips”! Happy Holidays!
Ami going to buy a wireless mic? Probably not. Did I watch and still learn loads from this, yes absolutely. Thank you again PB for taking your time to share your knowledge with us all. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.
If you do pro or client work, the Rode Wireless Pro and Dji Mic ii are your choices. For smartphone only, get the Rode Wireless Micro. If you have the osmo cameras, get the DJi mic mini. The Larc 2 is great if you on a budget.
Interested in the wireless go 2. I have it but have trouble making it work with my Nikon DSLR. Anyone have a link to a video about how to set it up properly? I have better success with the DJI mini 2 mic.
Just when I thought this review couldn't get any better, you start shooting a scene in Fremlin Walk 😂Outstanding! Merry Christmas mate, hope you have a good one!
What a great Christmas present from Mr Bloom! Disappointed my Hollyland Lark Max didn’t make the 32 bit cut but I’m watching the whole thing anyway 🤷🏽♂️
I HATE how they all have LEDs lighting you up when you're recording - like I get it tells you what the mic is doing but it ruins basically every shot. I'd love for them to add a discreet setting which just shows the LEDs at start so you know what it's doing and then turns them off.
Great and entertaining review, thanks. At times with all the little lights on, you looked like a walking Christmas tree. Perhaps you hoped that someone would leave a gift at your feet. Anyway, there is one use of these types of device, especially when very small, which I seem to have uniquely demonstrated here, namely using a stereo pair of wireless mics as a binaural (or pseudo binaural) recording device. I clip my Rode Wireless Micro transmitters either side of a baseball cap, and use my phone to record using the excellent "Field Recorder" app, which offers more options that almost any Android app out there for any purpose, with huge meters. The mics end up close to my ears and are relatively inconspicuous on a black cap, especially when wrapped with a bit of insulation tape. And the stereo image and audio quality are excellent, with no wires involved. Maybe give that a try, if time weighs heavy on your hands post-Christmas - and I hope you enjoy the season.
Listening on a pair of Sennheiser HD 650's through a FiiO Olympus 2 DAC and I personally keep favoring the Rode Wireless Pro - really feel it's got some legit honesty to its sound. Though the low-end feels heavy but - Sennheiser headphones tend to pump the lows I think. Want to hear against a Sennheiser G4 pack/lav sample. Also: Your mom's a legend also. Love her vibe. Hope she and ya'll are doing well, sir. Love this sort of video. Love the experience. Also: Go Storyblocks.
Thanks Philip and Merry Christmas. I’ve been happy with my Rode Wireless Go II with lav, I just long for an option on a less congested band than 2.4ghz.
Really useful Philip. Thanks for sharing. Would have loved to hear your thoughts on the new Sennheiser Profile mic and how it compares with all these others.
I love the 40GB storage on the Rode Wireless Pros, it has come in handy before to save old audio that I never realised was so bad (from months previous). I do think they're all ugly though, lavalier mics are awesome but when I am travelling overseas I tent to just clip the thing to my shirt without the lav, just because it's less to deal with in a hurry.
I think the Hollyland Lark M2 mobile stereo option is app specific. I believe if you use an app like the Final Cut Camera or Blackmagic App, you can split the audio to stereo.
@@philipbloom I stand corrected, I just tested it myself in the FC Camera and BM Camera apps and you are correct. Another reviewer, from a video that convinced me to buy the Lark M2 haha, contradicts our findings. Oh well!
@@philipbloom completely agree! Wow you covered most every little detail of a large array of mics. IMHOP the acoustics of the room/environment, the positioning of the mic and the person's type of voice has the biggest impact. You have a very deep voice so when these are mounted on you chest or worse under clothing sound muffled with no clarity. Normally I like the extra bass of the Rode but not in your voice. Naturally all of these would sound better EQ'ed. Not to harp on your voice, the noise reduction might be working worse because your voice is down in the low frequencies it removes. But I agree most of time I would prefer the background be left in. Btw, one thing you didn't mention is the wireless delay of these mics makes monitoring them a headache but I don't think the target audience (solo creators) would monitor.
You can hear the terrible job he noise reduction does in between me speaking. It should never be used in the recording. Always do it post. My tests were all fair because the comparisons were like for like for environments and mic position.
Thank you so much for your comprehensive review Phillip ! Could I ask what lav mics did you pair with each of the wireless systems when you tested them with one plugged in ? And do you think it's worth swapping out the stock mics for something else ?
Posted this on the wrong video - Great review! I personally use the Rode Wireless Pro but I don't understand why when you export the 32bit float out of the Central app it comes into Premiere with the levels extremely low. Any advice on the workflow with the files and Premiere? Cheers! - Philips reply - Try setting your level in the TX higher. Why are you exporting out of the central app? When you start it the RODEs should mount as drives.
Thanks for the quick response Philip, I was used to exporting out the app as you couldn't mount them as drives on the GOII. I've read many people with the same query as to when you export 32bit out the app for some reason the levels are super low on import into premiere and wondered if it were due to some workflow I wasn't aware of with 32bit float.
