  • Top things you didn’t know the purpose of! These are the everyday items and things you didn’t know the use for!
    #14. “Pen Cap”-- You have definitely noticed the tiny hole in the top of a cap and may have used it to try and make a whistle or pretended it was a tiny spyglass. Most people believe this hole has something to do with preventing a pen from drying-out but this is not the case. The hole in the pen cap actually serves as a safety feature. In the event that a small child swallows one, the hole allows air to pass through and reduces the risk of suffocation.
    #13. “Measuring Tape Tools”-- The modern measuring tape machine is a handy invention that most construction workers and contractors can’t live without, but even some of the most skilled workers might not know it has two incredible yet simple features. First there is the serrated edge on the metal end of the tape. This was put into the design so that if you desired you could put a minor scratch or indentation into the surface you are measuring, in order to give you a marker to make further measurements or designs off of. The other feature is right next to the serrated edge. You may have noticed the small hole that is commonly located in the metal tip. So what’s the purpose of this? Well this is so that if you are measuring something from a point where a nail or screw is you can hook the tape onto the nail and hold the tape in place.
    #12. “The Quarter’s Edge”-- You probably have spied the hundreds of tiny grooves that mark the outside edge of a quarter but not thought twice about it having a purpose. But these tiny ridges actually once served an important function and no it’s not just so magician’s can get a better grip during coin tricks. Up until recently, historically speaking, the cost of the metals in a coin reflected the coins value so many people took to shaving the edges off of the coins and then used the rest of the coin to purchase items as if the coin still had full value. They would then save up their shavings and melted them together to create new coins or just sell the chunks. In order to combat this, coin minters started putting these ridges on their coins so that retailers could tell whether the coins had been shaved. This practice, though not necessary today, is carried on for the sake of tradition and aesthetic. So why don’t nickels have them? Because no one cares about nickels.

      @@misshappyballl How are drugs horrible? If we legalized everything and made all you want of whatever you want OTC, you'd have way fewer overdose deaths ( because the drugs would be of a known and consistent quality ), jails wouldn't be overcrowded, law enforcement would be able to focus on murderers, child molesters, and others who need to be arrested, you'd have fewer young people getting into drugs because they aren't some forbidden fruit, drug addicts would be functional members of society instead of committing crimes ( doing the drugs at the appropriate times and places ) I could go on and on, but shouldn't it be your choice what you put into your own body?

    15- Jeans small pocket was originally for a pocket watch
    14 - Pen cap is to prevent choking
    13 - measuring tape metal edge is to scratch on a surface to mark it or to latch onto a screw or nail to hold in place
    12 - quarters were shaved off back in the day for a reason that isn’t relevant today
    11 - Hole in the tab of a soda can is to hold a straw
    10 - clothing that comes with extra buttons/fabric in a small bag is to test how they’re affected in your washer
    9 - small metal loops in grocery cart are to hang grocery bags although this video didn’t even show demonstration or pics as examples
    8 - half belt was a way to keep warm and be used to tighten clothing back in the day
    7 - fuel gauge on dashboard has an icon of a an arrow/hose letting you know what side to pull up to when getting gas
    6 - converse holes on the side are for having your laces go through them if wanted
    5 - pill bottle cap can be placed on top of the bottle but upside down for easy access every time you need to take a pill. That way you can just lift up the lid instead of unscrewing it from those orange medicine bottles every time. For people who would have a hard time opening otherwise(elderly or if you have hand problems)
    4 - margins on paper originally for preserving writings. By having margins you had more room on the edge that so if the borders of your paper deteriorated then your actual writing would still survive. Like if rats chewed on the edges of the paper. Margins on paper have just been kept ever since.
    3 - ketchup cups are meant to be unfolded to allow room for more ketchup or easy access for dipping. Chinese boxes are also meant to unfold.
    2 - cotton ball on top of beanies were to cover up unsightly seams and also protected from hitting your head under a boat dock back in the day
    1 - underwear’s small pocket is for hygiene

      I'm not sure I even buy that explanation. The cuplet is folded up that way because it's easier for a machine to cut it and shape it, making it mass-producible and cheaper. Same with the chinese food container -- easier to manufacture and easier to build on the fly. I think people are reading in potential uses never intended, and anyone stupid enough to unfold their Kung Pao Chicken container is going to get a lap full of permanent stain.

      They call it CONVERSE's design. Well let's get this fact straight - ALL low-income kids word shoes just like these, with the little circle on the side - we called them high tops and they were the cheapest shoes you could buy. Converse somehow took the cheapest shoes available and made them expensive. And people with money to waste started buying them because of the name... go figure.

    Page margin are historically to allow for bookbinding. Traditional bookbinding methods literally involved sewing the pages together with needle and thread, and running the thread through the cover. This could consume a considerable amount of page space, especially if a bookbinder wasn't particularly talented or experienced.
    Also, bindings were not nearly as durable back then, and could tear apart, suffer gradual wear through normal use, or otherwise fail and cause a book to fall to pieces. Whether performing maintenance on an encyclopedia or repairing a now-illegible text, this would require rebinding, where first you would cut off the previously bound portion plus a bit, to remove any paper torn or compromised by the damage. You would then take additional real estate on the page for the new binding. I'n this fashion, old books would "shrink" as they aged, due to this maintenance.
    To ensure that the book's actual content remained undamaged and legible, significant margins were all but universal. By providing plentiful dedicated space for binding work, there would be minimal risk to the book's content.
    Even though we now use many more simple, more advanced bindings now (from glue to 3 ring binders to hybrid bindings and more), this was commonplace and expected when it first appeared, and because these companies don't want to spend money on redesigning their product for little reward at the risk of alienating consumers with a new look, they leave the old feature in. Besides, people have found many side benefits to having a wide margin, such as the uses noted in the video.
    Also, while I'm primarily discussing full-page binding due to the context vis-a-vis notebook paper, packet or booklet binding also required a similar margin; its placement was just a little more complex.
    tl;dr page margins exist so you can bind pages together to make a book

    I have found that the best place to store clothes is on the floor. Not only is there a lot more space on the floor than in a dresser or closet, but you can also see all your clothes. You save time by not having to fold things, and you get exercise when you bend over to pick something up. Great way to use all that wasted space. One more special advantage is that your friends won't want to come to your house if your floor is covered with clothes, so you get to go to their houses and eat their snacks instead.

      It's not to hold hygiene products ( My family were clothing manufacturers) what rubbish! 😁... it's just extra material sewn in the gusset area , because obviously it is a delicate place where we need more strength, absorbency and softer fabric .
      It needs to be easy to wash though for hygiene purposes considering its position , for this reason it is often left open , pocketed for more easy rinsing of a more frequently, less expensive underwear , that may be worn more regularly and therefore washed in bulk in a machine.
      We usually take better care of our more expensive lingerie eh girls! 😘 I personally hand wash my good stuff. .

    Chinese takeout boxes are not meant to be unfolded for "plates", folding a piece of card stock is simply a good way to make cheap leak resistant containers without fancy manufacturing techniques like glueing a bunch of precisely cut seams.

    • @SeanFlesch
      @SeanFlesch 5 лет назад +33

      Umm. No it wasn't. Do a little research yourself. The old pull tabs also had a hole in them, for strength. Guess what. You can't use a straw on a pull tab. And guess what else. If they didn't roll the metal up, it wouldn't be strong enough to withstand being pulled up and not bending.
      And as per a comment below, do you use a straw on dog food and tuna and other cans that have the same type of pull?

      If you're standing facing a cart like you'd be pushing it... the hooks are around where your thighs would be below where the child seat area is. They're not really hooks, just small triangles jutting up from the cart. I'm a cashier and had a customer show me that a few days ago... never heard of it before then. I thought you were supposed to put the tampon inside *yourself* , not inside the panty pocket. And the sanitary pad *over* the fabric, not under it. I guess we should put diapers on babies over some undewear as well.
    And to think I've been using these products incorrectly for so many years... Thank you, internet! /s

    • @Palmieres
      @Palmieres 5 лет назад +39

      Tampons have existed for centuries, and disposable sanitary pads came about in the late 1800s. Before that women didn't wear panties fashioned like modern ones, they were more like shorts, so there was no real gusset as we see in modern panties. If you look at 1940's underwear, it's still mostly shorts. The gusset is not exclusive to underwear and its purpose is to reinforce areas of stress and prevent tearing, which I suppose is why they exist in modern clothing, especially because women wear much tighter pants now than they did in the past, so more stress on the fabric.
      The use of folded cloth in the place of pads to absorb the fluid would lose its purpose if you placed it under the gusset, because the underwear would get soaked and soiled all the same. The point of the pads (or the folded cloth) is to be able to change it when it can't hold any more fluid. It's not one per day; depending on the person it can be one every two hours. It's like the elevator in The Shining, man...!

      By making the hole, they rolled the metal around and made the tab stronger. Had it been a solid piece of metal, it would have had to of been much thicker to be as strong. That's why the body panels on cars have creases in them or are curved. It makes the metal more resistant to bending, and allows for less material.

      TFBAndrew: From the History of Converse: "It was in 1908 that the Converse Rubber Corporation opened for business. At first the company only made galoshes and other work related rubber shoes on a seasonal basis. But eventually the company decided it was more efficient to keep their work force employed year round, and began making athletic shoes. With the popularity of basketball, the Converse Corporation saw the need to develop a shoe that people could wear while playing basketball. After lots of research and development, the very first version of the All Star basketball shoe was produced in 1917. The All Star shoe originally came in natural brown colors with black trim. In the 1920s, Converse All Stars were made in all black canvas or leather versions. The All Star was to be the first mass produced basketball shoe in North America. It consisted of a very thick rubber sole, and a ankle covering canvas (or sometimes leather) upper. At first sales were slow. They would rapidly increase a few years later, thanks to Charles ‘Chuck’ H. Taylor."

    I can assure you that is not the correct way to use chinese food containers - they're shaped like that to produce a container with no seams or joins on the bottom or sides of the container, preventing it from leaking sauces. The fact that they unfold flat has no meaning, because that's just how cardboard and paperboard boxes are manufactured in the first place.

    Many of these seem to be clever uses rather than intentional design features as they are portrayed here. For example the original patent for the “Paper Pail”(Chinese takeout box) makes no mention of it being usable as a plate, but instead states the way it is folded is to allow it it to be made from a single flat sheet while not requiring any seems that would need to be sealed to prevent liquid from escaping

      The real reason for the hole is to make it easier to pull the pen out. Without the hole the pen will make a slight vacuum once inserted, resulting in having to use increased force to pull it out.

    The margins one is completely wrong, they originated in scrolls to differentiate 'pages,' then became a place for writing (marginalia) when scrolls became books with separate pages. It's also a place for readers to put their thumbs. It's also believed that not having a margin actually makes reading more difficult.

    The hole in pen caps is NOT to prevent suffocation. It allows air to escape when you put the cap on so it doesnt pop back off.

    • @Avanyiza
      @Avanyiza 5 лет назад +3

      did you know that air can be drastically compressed, far far far beyond what putting a pen cap on does? i really hope this is a joke post lol. not to mention you can still find pens with no holes in the cap and it never pops back off lol.

    • @carcophan
      @carcophan 4 года назад

      i always thought it was the opposite... so that when the cap is on, it doesn't create a vacuum and lets the air in to make it easier to pull off. however, i did see an article somewhere that was supposed to be regulations that the said the purpose of those holes was for choking... who knows anymore... i don't know why i watch these things anymore, i don't believe half of them.

    • @barrya.6212

      100 % right. It is also for molding too though. Makes the mold design better and cheaper with the hole. If it was solid they'd have to move the parting line and have slides to release it. It actually is more dangerous with the hole, heimlich manuever won't work

    Measuring tape: The metal end is designed for measuring within a space, and outside a space. The metal part MOVES - compresses when inside a space, such as measuring the inside of a corner. And it expands when measuring outside, such as from the end of a board. When compressed, the width of the metal end is included in the numbers on the measuring tape. When expanded, it adds space equal to the width of the metal, so the resulting measurement includes the gap.
