    Only three possibilities here.
    1. You use owner operators
    2. You pay overtime
    3. You pay higher wages so that truckers can survive on 44 hours and not quit the industry.
What this video suggests is somehow doubling your workforce for half the wages. Good luck

Im a company driver use to be OTR , and hate all the time wasted and not getting paid for., so is FAIR to get paid after 40 hrs of work like anybody else!!.

"Fully support this legislation! It's high time truck drivers get fair compensation for every hour they put in, not just the miles on the road. This bill isn't just about overtime; it's about recognizing and valuing the hours drivers spend waiting, loading, and doing other essential tasks. Yes, it might increase operational costs, but it's a necessary step towards ensuring that the backbone of our supply chain - the truckers - are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve. Better pay could also help alleviate the driver shortage by making the job more attractive. It's an investment in our drivers' well-being and the health of the industry. #FairPayForTruckers"

      I fully agree.
I disagree that trucking company’s will be able to all theses extra drivers to slip seat the trucks. By that logic the industry would need double the amount of drivers as now.
According to the ATA they’re a driver shortage! Lol, we all know that’s a lie. Big trucking is lying again.
They’re a fair pay issue with truck driving that cause the high turnover in the industry.
By the way there are company’s that pay hourly right now and don’t require slip seating. I suppose they don’t all pay time and half but even if they would have then I’m not convinced they would be able to easily hire enough driver to slip seat every truck.

  • @HeyYoZone

Let's not forget the human element in this debate: truckers and their families. These hardworking individuals spend long hours on the road, often away from their loved ones, to keep our supply chains moving. Supporting fair pay for truckers isn't just about economics; it's about respect and recognition for the sacrifices they make every day. Fair compensation for all their work, including non-driving tasks, is a step towards acknowledging their invaluable contribution to our society. It's about ensuring that they can provide for their families and have a quality of life that they rightfully deserve. Let's stand in solidarity with our truckers for fair pay and better working conditions. #RespectAndFairPayForTruckers

Treating the drivers like dogs for years will come around to bite the fleet owners in the butt. Enjoy.

  • @edwardjoseph5448
    @edwardjoseph5448 6 месяцев назад +8

You’re really only saying it from a fleet owner perspective. Not a driver perspective. Sure if I was a fleet owner I’d be saying the same thing. But let’s say the bill passes and all companies start capping drivers at the 40 hour mark and drivers make between 55-62 cpm (national average) . The drivers will leave and even less people will get into the industry. That’s 4 10 hour shifts of driving so potentially around 1500-2000 miles if you get good runs and have a good dispatcher. Thats 1200 gross a week MAX and on a VERY good week given the potential changes you talked about. But if the companies still kept the same structure and the overtime rule went into effect then we’d make a lot more money. Significantly more money in fact. Also the idea that you’ll get more team drivers for that kind of money is absurd. It’s hard enough nowadays to get people to drive team now. Let alone if you’ll be doing slip sitting teams. The other thing is that if we did go to 40 hour work weeks the companies would have to pay significantly more per mile or go to a per hour pay rate just to keep drivers. So either way if this rule passes and fleets cap the hours of the drivers they’ll be forced to pay more per mile or per hour to keep us. EITHER WAY the drivers will benefit. I get that it sucks as a business owner . I get your point but you’re definitely not seeing it from a driver pov. You’re seeing it as a fleet owner because you’ll have to pay your guys more for the same job they were doing before the bill. That’s my 2 cents anyway.

  • @RyanBanman

I think your right that it will disrupt the industry. It needs it. People need to realize that shipping rates are too low. Our wages, our equipment is expensive and people need to get that the industry sucks!!!
There aren't enough drivers as it is, so maybe carriers will be forced to increase rates to pay a good driver for the full time? Even O/Os will consider their time worked over regular hours.
A tradesman gets big money for taking on an out of town job.
Truckers make decent money per year. But always away from home without the same kind of bonus. And the amount of hours worked for the pay received is garbage!!!! I despise this industry
And of course the trucking associations would be against it. They're not for the trucker, they're for the big trucking company business owners!!

You realize right this would put pressure on ceos in trucking companies like ronin to put pressure on brokers and customers to pay better, BECAUSE, despite ronin clear as day dismissiveness, he wouldnt make you guys sit especially otr, you cant slip seat regional or otr, so the only course would be to put pressure on these shipper, recievers, and brokers to pay better, so it would increas frieght rates especially for o/o because dont wanna pay overtime for company drivers, pay o/o better rates to where it would be better then paying overtimes, but better then what they are doing to cheap rates gthey have now... REMEMBER ronin used to be a truckers... he has been a ceo for quite awhile now... the ceo mindset has kicked in. Nothing wrong with that, but remember in situations like this he is going to see this from the truckers perceptions..... AND GUESS WHAT??? he know it cause he clearly had to try and explain that it is a truckers perceptions, but i when he said that i got the vibes i get, when i have been around manipulators.. That way all time is paid waiting around at shippers and unpaid time with the numerous amounts of tasks that are involved in trucking.

  • @mikeziegler7008

I agree with Ronen in that this is the worst time to introduce this legislation. Too many trucks competing with too few loads will result on the loads being spread over more trucks with each truck earning less. Imagine a scenario where you have a load and you are told that you must shut down after 8 hours every day? This will certainly happen except in cases where the load is desperately needed as quickly as legally possible. When I was an OTR driver, I HATED sitting in truck stops when I could/should have been driving. It would really suck being forced to park while under a load all because the company only wanted you working for straight time.
So that is the question; Will the trucking companies be compelled to pay you for time spent sitting, (NOT WAITING FOR LOADING/UNLOADING), but sitting, waiting on dispatch or sitting because you are told to park to avoid OT? Losing the ability to earn while ALSO being stuck out of town will really, REALLY suck.

Other than eat a bag of dirt, or make my decision that may or may not have repercussions. Or having to settle for below minimum wage detention pay. I know how to run my clock. Split logging for example means more time working and not getting paid accordingly at times. That’s the problem I have and many others have. Time away from home and no proper compensation. The company is always going to make their business decisions at the expense of your time and labor. In my opinion that first 2 hours free is between that customer and it’s carrier not me as the driver.

I was a company driver for two years and now one year as son owner operator running under a mega carrier. This profession is amazing driving all over this country is amazing but the bullshit that we have to take from dispatcher, brokers, dot, truck stops 4 wheelers without us able to retaliate and if we do we get grounded like kids, I hate it, no one verbally can at work assault a fellow employee without consequences and hr involved but we do. The industry fears because one way or another we the drivers are the industry and even in bad times we make money, we are the industry, my mega carrier has more trucks parked in yard than on the roads, because we are the back bone of the industry and they know it.

So for the last 40 years the wages have sucked azz in the industry, I spent 22 years long haul all over Canada and the USA even a few times to Mexico. They have always whined about driver shortages every where every month another load of CRAP, the main issue always has been and always will be the money is not enough period. Month in and Month out the driver trades his lifetime of waiting and not getting compensated. You say now is not the time and guess what companies and operations managers have been saying that also since I got into it. Because they dont care about the drivers and if they did they would pay them for the hours they worked period. What other industry assumes a employee has to give away 3 hours a day roughly because thats just the way it has been since 1938??????? How about all those who oppose it in the offices and the factories shippers and receivers start working for 3 hours a day for free to balance out the wage gap between drivers and the rest working in the industry. I guess our families and our paycheques are not as import as the dock workers or the administration workers or the freight brokers. You know the average age of a truck driver in Canada is 58 years old. It is very hard to get people to stay in the industry after 3 months because they get a real taste of being away from family and friends and the money just doesn't cut it. When will the drivers pay match the drivers time in the trucks period. The rest of the world does not have to work 3 hours a day for free. And just because it used to be like that and it helped the industry grow is horse shit, the big companies and the fleet owners grew because they were not and still dont pay a driver a fair average hourly wage. So in the end all drivers will trade time for money and they will not get both they will only get one or the other. Fair pay and equality has never been part of the trucking industry and never will. You think now is not the right time some day very soon the boomers will be all gone(retired early or on time) then what is your plan.....it should be happening now. The changes need to be in place. The driver shortage they have always talked about is really going to happen in about 4 or 5 years from now. Just 1 long haul truck drivers opinion.... :)

Alot of companies do this but you have to be waiting for minimum of 2 hours before that hourly wage kicks in. One company I drove for starting paying you after 1 hour, but always the minimum waiting time had to be hit before downtime pay started. So if you waited for 2hrs getting loaded then at 2hr 15min you're done you still gave up 2h14m of free time. CPM plus "all time" waiting at a shipper/receiver should be paid. My ELD let me swap to "on duty @ shipper/receiver", every minute of that should be paid at 30 bucks an hour.

I am not going to be home on Thanksgiving. That’s why you should realize drivers don’t get fair pay. Some times are more valuable than any compensation offered. Think about this while you enjoy dinner with your family. Yes truckers deserve fair pay.

Ever since that worthless pile from Ga signed the Transpo act of 1980, taking the Gov't out of trucking, it's been a race to the bottom.
I may be retired now, but I want to live to see this industry returned back to the golden era of trucking. In the 60's and into the early to mid 70's, truckers were the blue collar Kings. AFTER 1981, that guy making french fries at the McD's was making more than a Company driver...

The fix is to establish a minimum wage per mile. Minimum per mile should be .70 a mile and time and a half should kick in at 40 hours making 1.05 a mile. Do it industry wide so it hits everyone and no one is out under cutting anyone because everyone has to pay drivers the same way. Bottom line is that if the BS Chinese crap that people buy has to go up by 5 cents to ensure the drivers are getting paid than that’s just life.
I think that some companies would try to slip seat at 40 hours but it’s really not feasible unless you’re a local driver. Unless they started building terminals all over the place, not to mention there are not enough people who want to drive a truck to make that possible.

Drivers should be compensated from the moment they are required to log until the moment they are relieved from duty. For all work, for all wait time, for every single thing that DOT requires be logged as time spent on duty(fuel, loading, unloading, Pretrip, post trip, mid trip, scaling, inspections, etc) and additionally either paid hourly or on a salary basis.
Trust companies to do what is FIRST AND FOREMOST in their own interest. If it’s in your interest as a driver, it’s incidental. If a company says unions will hurt you, ask yourself why the company is saying that. They say we think it’s better that you can negotiate your salary directly with us as if it’s negotiable at all. Can salaries rising beyond what a company can bare hurt you as a driver? Absolutely it can. That company and your job can disappear. But again, that’s not actually why companies give a shit about paying you for all the time worked and logged(and usually not logged) by drivers. It’s solely for a profit motive. And as an unapologetic capitalist I don’t oppose this motive. I’m all for companies making profits. And I am also for employees demanding compensation commensurate with the value provided to a company. In a trucking company, it’s almost all of the value outside of the trailer pool and sometimes the contracts. Contracts can change, equipment can age out of a fleet, but it’s a fucking storage shed without you the driver. Fuck these companies.
And if the ATA says it, you better believe it’s 100% not in your interest. Guaranteed.

Being an O/O it might actually cause the fright rates to go up. The reason for that thinking is that if a carrier has to pay O/T, then they aren't going to take the loads that are paying what they are. That would cause the reject tender rate to go up, which would raise the shipping rates.
This would cause another issue of a high reject tender rate. Yes, the price would go up, but so would inflation. We can see this of what happened since covid. So, in the long run, it would just make things worse than what it is already.
