Holy Crap! Polished indeed! Peep how they actually rendered the fx of your vessels firepower hitting the surface of the water - complete with splash effect 16:39 O_O If you look closely the ship even generates bubbles while under water.
That's a unique damage system as well- losing only your current weapon meaning you can take two hits per level and still finish on a single life. Not a lot of shooters have some unique mechanic (UN Squadron having the "danger zone" warning hit that you can wait out to take another hit later on, but always ensuring that you have to be hit twice in order to die in any level)
Alignn Blak... Tbh one thing bothred me more than how many times i die in the underwater stage, And thats the FLATness of enemys appearing on the first stage... Some people may get the wrong idea.
+eneomaos And chances are, we'll never see the sequel since the company who made the game, Konami, is on the verge of death (or at least, for most of its developers) Either that... or maybe we'll finally get Axelay 2... ...as a fucking Pachinko machine... ._____.
Axelay is definitely one of the best 16 bit shmups, also the beautyful detailed and colorful graphics and atmospheric soundtrack are one of the best in its timeline and genre.
how this awesome game didnt become a franchise on the same level as r-type is beyond me. i can only imagine what a 3D axelay wouldve brought to the table.
First time looking up this game, never played it way back when it was release, and I found it funny the enemy being shot sound is the exact same in Contra 3. Also the explosion sounds are the VERY similar.
im glad for this play through, i have seen others but they have the " later " issued games that have effed up sounds. this one has the original sounds like I knew. thank you for this play through. I loved this game with all my heart
hi!!! I am someone who knows this game.... and I have to say you play very good. I never saw anyone who plays that good this game. You even play better than me, which is pretty damm close to your knowledge. I am very impressed. As I watched your video I knew where and when u going to loose a life (19th minute).... you did still better than me..... till now I never saw anyone who plays better than me...till today. RESPECT!!!
Thank you for comment. Yes, Konami made good shooters and this one simply is a masterpiece. This game pushed SNES to his limit - great graphics with amazing effects, awesome music, horizontal and vertical scrolling, ability to switch weapons in the game! I'll try extreme hard when I will have free time. You can subscribe to my channel - sometimes I'll upload some walkthroughs :D sorry for my bad engilsh, it's not my native language, I'm russian.
OmKol your english is very good!!! I am Hungarian and grew up in Germany and now I live in Florida. I will subscribe, but my wife has to show me how first lol :)
your right, it "seems" to be.... but it is different to watch it or playing it ;) if you play it through from level easy to hard, you will experience the game play and get probably the right impression. Of course back then, that game was equivalent with the other games which we can not compare with games from nova days.
The only thing i find odd is how the background just suddenly stops at the end of level one when you start to fight the boss. Good game though I played it briefly back in the day
33:30 I was so hardcore back in the day, I finished the boss off without moving vertically, thinking that particular scenery would kill me on touch up and down (it didn't :p )
Beautiful run, but you should also try doing the Super Hard Mode, which you unlock by beating Hard Mode and staying through the whole credits. I did it once and it was insane!
Sounds like Konami recycled many of its Contra 3 sound effects for Axelay, or it could be the other way around since they were both released in or around 1992.
Axelay was made by the people who broke off to make Treasure. Before they felt they were good enough to do this, they wanted to make a 'new' game, so there was Axelay. Also it was decided that the same team would work on super Castlevania. Konami's problem was always that they don't treasure all the talent their IPs, legacy, and history attracts, which is probably what they thought of when they settled on naming the new company quite literally Treasure. Most of the classic Konami music was made by people like Taro Kudo, who formed legit bands within the studio, with techs and hackers to figure out what were the actual limits on console sound capabilities, as opposed to what Nintendo and SEGA claimed were the limits. As Axelay showed back in 1992, there's not a lot of limits when you're rocking a soundtrack that could be set to Dougram, Gundam, or Galforce, and the gameplay is S+ tier classic Konami at the peak of productivity.
Sad this wasn't included on the new Super Nintendo Classic. Hell, like there was even much shooter action period. This one should've been included just for the signature "Mode 7" usage and incredible music.
Had this on snes back in the days. I loved it because the mode 7 levels, the music was awesome, the ship looked cool AND it was actually not stupidly hard and could be finished unlike most shmups.
Did you knew if you play trough the "hard" level and you don't turn it off after finishing the hard level, you automatically go in an "extreme hard" level that you cant even choice ....u have this special difficulty ONLY if you play through the hard level.....
I'm really not a fan of the screen curving effect they are doing in a few of the level here. I actually think it makes the levels look more flat than just having one or two well drawn background layers without the curving, which totally defeats the point. I don't like the weapon you have to hold to fire forward then release to fire in other directions either. Outside of that the game is mostly cool.
If Konami ever goes bankrupt for any reason, Treasure Co. Ltd should buy the rights to this game and make a legitimate sequel, because the storyline of this game remains unfinished even as I speak.
Good job on making it through, though I have to question your constantly firing even when there are no enemies on screen; you are just pissing your ammo away!
The ammo's unlimited, the lives are not, so shoot, shoot, shoot away. This game really doesn't give you many moment s of not shooting something, and if you happen to not be shooting when enemies attack, and you let them clutter the area, you pay dearly.
God, Axelay just had so much POLISH. Look at all that enemy variety, those beautiful graphics, the super-memorable music...
Holy Crap! Polished indeed!

The final message.
"See you at axelay 2"

cmnweb the same to you bro.
Greetings
+cmnweb Another Mexican here, also waiting for the sequel =)
+eneomaos And chances are, we'll never see the sequel since the company who made the game, Konami, is on the verge of death (or at least, for most of its developers)
Either that... or maybe we'll finally get Axelay 2...
...as a fucking Pachinko machine... ._____.
me too my friend iam waiting
Axelay is definitely one of the best 16 bit shmups, also the beautyful detailed and colorful graphics and atmospheric soundtrack are one of the best in its timeline and genre.
Good run on Axelay. What a shame Konami never got round to producing a sequel.
how this awesome game didnt become a franchise on the same level as r-type is beyond me. i can only imagine what a 3D axelay wouldve brought to the table.
That cave level and that music, oh god... They knew how to make good games back in the days.
Great graphics, fantastic control, Amazing soundtrack, killer fx, real creativity and variety - a true gem for the SNES
The best thing about games released back in these days? They were actually finished.
+Ty Lawson. I think something even better is that they COULD be finished.
And you actually own them.
This game is by fare the best shooter ever made. R-type is great ... Darius superb... but this is master piece!!
For the SFC maybe.
5:05, best level-music in the game!!!! Awesome!
Haven't played this game in many, many years. The music is so calming! Glad I watched this video.
This game was a lot of fun to play! Loved the exuberant music, it still sounds fresh today.
Axelay uno de mis favoritos en Lima Perú, hoy en Diciembre 2019 recuerdo este juegaso
The best snes shootemup, period. At the time, i was waiting for a mix between Axelay and thunder force series
I don't think I've ever SEEN the second level in my LIFE on easy, let alone hard!!
😂
I remember every time I started a level I would say "good luck" along with the announcer lol.
First time looking up this game, never played it way back when it was release, and I found it funny the enemy being shot sound is the exact same in Contra 3. Also the explosion sounds are the VERY similar.

Ferenc Vad I am subscribing because of this conversation : )
+Ferenc Vad hm seems standard game play to me, at least where I come from

That little ship dances when you defeat a boss lmao
12:17 Looks Like A Cabal Cruiser From Destiny And Destiny 2
This Was No Mere Game.It Was A Cinematic Experience!!! Thanks Konami!!!!
man...that mode 7. I have never heard of this game...looks awesome
David Hilton Looks awesome, yes, but it’ll still test your skills even on Easy... ;)
David Hilton is not mode 7 is just scroll parallax I think
Yeah. mode-7 was only used in the intro/outro and the 2nd level Boss.
Neat how they decided to play with the angle for this. Could have looked just like any ordinary shootem up.
OMG! That KONAMI sound... we all knew that it would be great even if you didn't know the game.
i had the Japanese version on the Super Famicom, my very first title for that console. good times!
Some of the tunes in this game remind me a LOT of F-Zero's soundtrack. And the gameplay and art reminds my of a MUCH finer version of Phalanx.
The only thing i find odd is how the background just suddenly stops at the end of level one when you start to fight the boss. Good game though I played it briefly back in the day
All your bases are belong to us
Magnífico!!!...Parabéns!!!
thanks for the video!
Amazing game!! great music!

I didn't remove this video because people could share it on some websites.

mode-7 is hardly used in this game. Ingame only on the 2nd level Boss.

'that's cute'
1 of the beat Sfc games 👍
Had this on snes back in the days. I loved it because the mode 7 levels, the music was awesome, the ship looked cool AND it was actually not stupidly hard and could be finished unlike most shmups.
They aren’t mode-7 levels.
Axelay 2 will be a ROM hack
Wished the whole game was horizontal
Did you knew if you play trough the "hard" level and you don't turn it off after finishing the hard level, you automatically go in an "extreme hard" level that you cant even choice ....u have this special difficulty ONLY if you play through the hard level.....
Saudades.
Behold.... AXELAY
hey is there a third side 2 weapon to select. B/c i have never seen it before.

You're one mean son of a bitch I can't even last 5 minutes with full lives XD
good old times
This game is impossible to beat for humans. Where are you from?
Good video boy!!
If Konami ever goes bankrupt for any reason, Treasure Co. Ltd should buy the rights to this game and make a legitimate sequel, because the storyline of this game remains unfinished even as I speak.
*****
Because the old Konami already died out even before they go bankrupt, its just called Fakeonami now.
i really...seriously didnt think anyone liked this game except me
What A Slowdown...!

Autofire?
10.05 Are you cheating ??

Yeah yeah mode 7, except the perspective and how the enemies/objects fly towards you are totally unrealistic.
Lol
