- In this video, we show you how to remove your front and rear valance on your 4runner. Once removed it's up to you whether you paint them, vinyl wrap them, or completely replace them with the trd pro option. We chose to show you how to paint them because not everyone is comfortable doing vinyl wrap. It's a cheap and easy way to make your valances black and save over $300. Below is a link to the trim black we used. If you have any questions please comment below. Thanks for watching and remember your xpedition is on the horizon.

Nice job! You had me at removing the front valance clips but lost me at removing the rear bumper. I'm okay at taking stuff off, not so okay at re-assembling. I will take my chances sanding the rear valance on-vehicle. My TRD ORP is silver. I've added the gray TRD rims, added black overlays painted with gun metal gray Plasti-dip which is what I will do to the valances. Not as much contrast as black but it's different.
We ended up removing the rear bumper so we could completely remove the rear valance from it. So we didn't take the chance of getting overspray on anything or accidentally sanding on the white. It made it easier to also sand the edges. Removing the rear bumper doesn't take long and it just made the painting process easier.
Will definitely look into doing this. I have a black ‘16 Trail Premium. Looking to have full black balances. Considering if I should take them to match the paint or leave the “matte” look… subscribed and looking forward to your content!
All depends on the kind of look you are going for. The paint matched valances do give you a cleaner look in my opinion. The black valances have a more aggressive appearance. In our case, the silver valances were hideous against the white and we wanted to show the 4Runner community how to paint them black in a DIY manner.
@@yotaxpedition would you recommend the sem flexible primer or would that be unnecessary. Thanks for responding
@@AG4runner I think you will be fine without it. As long as you just scuff the clear coat to get that top layer off the paint should stick fine.
@@yotaxpedition thanks!
How much time do you give between each coat of paint?
Looks good for now but being the front bumper part. Just get it professionally painted or buy one that's black. It will save you the headache down the road with chips & flaking. 😆👍
We sell black ones as well.
Do you ship to Hawaii?
Did you end up using 2 cans or is 1 can enough?
any tricks on reinstallation of the rear bumper? order of operations or anything t hat a novice would need to be aware of? picking up my 2023 trd off road lunar rock in a few weeks and want this done
The rear bumper removal and installation is not a difficult job. Just take your time and be careful to watch the paint when reinstalling it.
I wish I saw this video before doing my plasti dip. I prefer taking the valence off.
Plasti dip isn't the worst, at least if you want to go this route you still can!
Hello there, thx for the video. I have a 2020 SR5 and do you know if the rear bumper have the markings inside where the clips goes like the front bumper does? Thank you for the help
Yes, the rear bumper has the markers so you know where to cut.
I have no idea how you reached all the clips in the front bumper. The two extreme side clips where the slits run vertical impossible. I ended up putting my clips back in that I did get off and just masked the car with plastic and masking tape. Back bumper worked out as you did 👍🏽
Yeah, some clips are hard to get to. Glad it worked out for you.
Im with you 4hrs and those clips on the end are impossible this 4runner must be a little more simple my 24 premium has some side covers that dont let you get to them without removing the while bumper
How long did you wait between applying each coat of paint? Or did you wait any time at all? Awesome video btw!!
I would wait like 10 mins between coats.
How is it holding up? Does it need a clear coat? Planning to do this aswell just looking for some tips
Still looks good. I personally wouldn't clear coat it because I like the flat look. With clear, it would be too shiny. But you might like that look. The paint as is matches the other black accents pretty well.
Do you think I can do the front valance with just one can? I had to put my silver front back on because my black one was ripped off clean driving through flooded streets.
It really depends on how many coats you want to put on it, I recommend buying at least 2 cans
You should be good with one can.
How is the paint holding up? Does it easily scuff/come off? Thanks
Held up pretty well. But we now have our Yota X black ones installed that we sell. And we got a aftermarket front bumper so we no longer have the front one.
Mine is chipping in the front should I remove & sand with 600 too?
Yes you can do that. Sand the whole thing with 600 and sand the chipped areas until they are smooth and repaint it.
Can you tell what paint you used to do this . They look sweet .
Trim black by SEM. Link is in the description.
How many coats and cans were required to achieve it?
We used jut under 2 cans and threw on 3 coats. Came out well!
Which sand paper did u use ?
I wet sanded it with 600 grit.
I swear there is more bolts holding the headlights then the rear bumber lol
So many on the headlights
Agreed!
Man so many lame "mods" on these trucks.. valence painting.. raptor lights.. and everybody wants an sr5 to look like a pro.. all with the same damn engine...no wonder toyota has stupid tax on the used market..
I honestly wish the TRD PRO came with a diesel.
