    I've been living in Amsterdam for more than 20 years and have always been just walking through the streets to my destinations but have never been hit by a bike. Amsterdam is the most beautiful city of the Netherlands and the most Dutch people love to live there.

    I agree. Tourists really miss out when they visit the netherlands and just go see amsterdam (dont get me wrong, amsterdam is amazing). I had visited amsterdam 3 times before i ended up on the coast and i was amazed at the great time i had on the beach in the netherlands and who would have thought "beach and netherlands" togehter? Thanks for the tips on the netherlands and thank you for watching adn commenting! All the best!

    The hell...? Amsterdam has wonderful food, lots of choice its fantastic for eating even the street food is lovely, you can avoid the prostitution don't go to the red light district, I've been a bunch of times and not seen any prostitues. I have never felt ANY danger at night its the safest place I've been, although immigration has changed some areas and you do feel kind of edgy especially in the back areas around Dam Square and yeah the Metro at night can be sketchy.
    If your going make sure you do one thing, the Dutch have superb public transport so spread your wings and head outside of the main centres, don't just hang around De Dam, Liedseplein and Rembrantsplein.

      I don't see any danger as well... I guess people from Amsterdam are so used to it we don't even see it anymore...

      +Big Al Music Yeah, I think that's part of the problem. Still, the worst that happens to tourists is their wallet gets stolen. Just be alert in public transport and around Central Station. Other than that, it's one of the safest capitals in europe. Sure, there are bad areas, but what tourist goes to Bos en Lommer, or the Bijlmer?

    The bikes can be dangerous when you first get there but outside the city it's amazing to be on one. Those motorized scooters/mopeds, whatever you call them, can be seriously scary at times when you haven't gotten used to them. Great videos. You are honest and, of the two cities I've been to which you've done your videos on (Berlin and Amsterdam), you've been really helpful.

    there are some FANTASTIC restaurants in Amsterdam, but this video is for those tourists that are there for 2 maybe 3 days and they most of the time do not have the time or knowledge to know where to look. I am heading back to Amsterdam next Summer (will be working in Belgium so figure why not stop by for a fun time). And I am going to redo this one to explain the need to search out the good restaurants. thanks!

    Hi Mark, you might not see this comment with this video post being so old, however wanted to comment anyway 😊
    I’ve been following your channel for a while now and love your videos and tips when travelling! This video just popped on my list and decided to watch it as I am heading back to Amsterdam in next month, which I am very much looking forward to! Loved seeing this video even though it was over 12 years old as 1. Gosh it shows how far you have come with you RUclips channel and how much better AV technology has gotten over that time (of course but still a good reminder), 2. Your feedback on some things in Amsterdam seems to have changed over the years and great to see how some things have changed over that time with having seen your newer posts on Amsterdam, 3. It’s been 10 years since I’ve been there so am really keen to see for myself what has changed there over this time and what is still the same, 4. Finally, while lots has changed over ~12 years love that you and your videos are still as insightful, helpful and genuine which hasn’t changed 👏 Thanks so much! (PS sorry for the essay here!)

    I spent an hour at the Dam Square watching the bicycles riding around. There were so many people zipping around on bikes. I was amazed no one got killed. There seemed to be rules, but I could not figure out who had the right away.

  • @1pauluzz1
    @1pauluzz1 8 лет назад +37

    My response to the negatives:
    1. Yes, be careful. But bikers don't go everywhere. The vast majority of them follow the rules as well because it's quite dangerous not to as the city is so very crowded. Tourists and spaced out / drunk people cannot seem to differentiate normal roads and sidewalks from cycle paths . Hint: cycle paths are often marked red and have bike signs.. and.. cyclists riding on them.
    2. I've been to some very good restaurants in Amsterdam. Just don't expect to walk into the tourist area and find a good restaurant. Do some research online, check out reviews, make reservations.. plenty of good food out there.
    4. Drunk, high tourists. Yup. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU BRITS!) But 'dangerous' isn't the right word. Most of the times high tourists just want chocolate, pizza and a hug.. quite harmless.
    Enjoy your stay!

    Great advice about a beautiful city!So true about the cyclists,however there is ample room for pedestrians as well ,just pay attention to where you are walking .We did find a nice affordable place to stay that was in one of the suburbs.The food choices were good ,nothing exceptional but good and affordable.Spot on about the architecture and the museums were absolutely incredible.Definitely no need for a car here the transit will take you anywhere you need to go.Thanks Mark,we just did a 12 day trip through Nortern Europe and your videos were a huge help!

  • @hassesiemonsdochter574
    @hassesiemonsdochter574 10 лет назад +15

    my opinion as a dutch resident:
    Things your gonna hate:
    1,I can imagine that it looks like the bikes don't follow the rules,but they do(maybe a few not),But as a tourist you should know where you can walk.
    Everywhere you are you should look first to the traffic before you cross a street,in Amsterdam you should watch the bikes before you cross a ''Fietspad''(bicycleroad'').
    It makes me crazy that I sometimes almost hit a tourist,because they cross a ''fietspad'' lik a blind horse.
    2,On the eating in Amsterdam I totally agree,Food in Amsterdam i really bad if you compare with the rest of The Netherlands.
    There are a few spots with really good food,but you should know them.
    3,The drugs,it is true that there are a lot of coffee shops in Amsterdam,i don't see it as a + or a -,if you like it,you like it ,if you don't you don't.
    If you don't want to see snow,don't go to Greenland,if you don't like sun,don't go to Nevada,if you don't want to see drugs,Don't go to Amsterdam.
    4,totally agree,i hate them as well,tough i don't see so many Germans but more Brits acting like that.
    5,i never had to book a hotel in Amsterdam,so no experience with that.
    Five things you gonna like:
    1,The museums are great in Amsterdam,we are very proud of it,definitely now the Rijksmuseum complete his rebuilding. .
    2,The canal tours are so touristy,if i can give people an advice,find somebody from Amsterdam and ask if he will take you on a tour by bike,you will see much more.
    3,Watch point 3 in the ''don't list'' above,But skip the word ''Don't''.
    4,The architecture is indeed very nice,But read something about the history of Amsterdam,then you will know why it is build like this.
    5,The french fries are really nice,you should eat that for sure.
    But Wolterswolrd makes a really big mistake, They are not called ''Friet'' in Amsterdam,we call it ''patat''.
    They call it friet in the south of The Netherlands,and Flanders.
    The funny thing is,if you order french fries with mayo,you don''t get mayonnaise,but you will get ''Frietsaus''.
    But in Dutch language we call it ''Mayonaise'' but it isn't.
    If you wanna buy a bottle of that in the supermarket it will say"frietsaus''on the bottle,If you buy a bottle of ''mayonaise'' you will get the mayonnaise like they have in France.

      reviews normally based on individual preferences..and most americans they have "funny" preferences.. and this guy love arts and museum. seen his reviews on few cities. So his reviews might tend to be biased..personnaly i have not met arts loving persons who dared to paint the town red.. I been to Amsterdam before and alone, No problem in getting a hotel room, never get hit by a bike coz i watch where i am going, I purposely make myself lost in the streets to see the real Amsterdam, Come early to touristy packed places to avoid ques and jammed and walking alone in red light district at night and came out alive. I had a wonderful time. What is he talking about?

    • @In1998able

      true most restaurant in the city center are rubbish. To expensive and you get poor service and terrible food.
      And you will smell weed in most of the city centers in the Netherlands. No big deal. And I have never tried it. And I am 17 now.
      And I don't live in Amsterdam but I have been there a few times.
      But the rest of the city is brilliant.

    Amsterdam is great, mostly. The streets are clean, the people are well-dressed and educated. The bikes will kill you. You will have to adjust very, very quickly.

  • @corien
    @corien 10 лет назад +7

    The bikes aren't that bad, it's just that tourists do know where to expect them or even to expect them in the first place. Crossing the street without looking, walking on bicycle paths etc. is what is most dangerous. And you're more likely to be hit by a tourist on a bike, as they think you can just cycle everywhere without paying attention. However, I think that you make a valid point, but that the bikes aren't the problem; I'd personally say that the main problem is that pedestrian paths are way too narrow. There is just not enough space to walk with a group of people without having to walk on the road/bicycle path.

    It's a nice city and all, but I dont get why tourists are so obsessed by visiting just that place and dont seem to have much interest in visiting other parts of the Netherlands.
    There's the deltaworks which help to prevent floods, Fairytale styled themepark "De Efteling" , Madurodam, the reconstructed Batavia, we have quite a few castles even though they arent as big as those of our neighbours..
    Also great cities like Breda, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Scheveningen, Maastricht and many more. Breda is my personal favorite.

      Tristan Tristan Well Amsterdam caters very strongly to tourists. I gues it depends a lot on what you are looking for in your vacation and it may require looking up some info about the other cities.
      There are several high quality amusement parts in the Netherlands for example. Plenty of museums, interesting architecture, some sports.. it depends on what you are looking for, really.

    • @Killtris
      @Killtris 8 лет назад +1

      +Willem Verheij I agree, the other parts in the Netherlands have nice attractions. But so do many other smaller cities in Europe. Amsterdam is so unique in its way and I think that's why it attracts so much more tourists. Because there is almost no routine, lots of crazy people. Its a big playground for adults. And that's really unique compared to other European cities. If you look beyond the tourists spots and visit local districts you still get a very accurate image of Dutch culture and tradition.
      Most British people kind of go to Amsterdam for the same reason Dutch people go to Cherso.
      In every dense tourist area, culture gets lost.

    I find it hard to recognise my city in most of the 'hates'. Yes, we bike like maniacs, and it can be a little unnerving at first if you're unused to relative traffic anarchy. But it works. There are relatively few accidents and the main rule as a tourist is 'don't walk in the middle of the road, or cross the street without looking both ways'. Not too tricky. As to the drug addled tourists, poor hotels and terrible food; yes that all applies to the dingy cheap tourist traps you'll find in every city in every country on Earth. Amsterdam is very compact and easy to get around, so don't think you have to be right in the centre. Look at hotels in Amsterdam South. Rent an apartment. For food, ask your hotel or a local - most people will be happy to help. Or look online and enjoy one of the more than 2.500 restaurants. Avoid the ones that have pictures of their food on the menu like you would everywhere else! Easy... Enjoy!

I make these because I know if I would have known some of these things before I traveled I would have been better prepared and thus would have enjoyed my trips more. Yeah, not everyone is happy with the videos :) I got a "you should die" today because some people do not quite agree with some of my ideas :) but i am glad there are people like you out there that are enjoying them. You gave a nice and honest overview of Amsterdam. I live here (I'm American) and I agree with what you said. It costs a fortune to go out to eat here so people should just rent a place with a kitchen and cook for themselves you will save money in the long run.

    I agree. The city is amazing and it is kind of sad that it has the reputation that it is just drugs and $ex. The Rijks museum, ann frank house, the canals, biking all over the city. There is so much to offer. I have a top 10 amsterdam video basically saying the same thing, that it is so much more than coffeeshops and red light windows. Thank you for watching and commenting and i hope you will subscribe! Mark

    Dangerous cyclists? Tourists often wander blindly onto the cycle paths. I live in Amsterdam and I see it every day whilst cycling through the city. You don't have to dodge cyclists if you stay on the pavement/sidewalk.

    • @keokiracerhalsteren
      @keokiracerhalsteren 9 лет назад +14

      Yeah it's basically that tourists don't know how cycling is "regulated" here. As in, if it's a cyclepath it is NOT meant for walking. Something that tourists don't seem to understand because there isn't that much cycling where they're from. And if you do decide to walk on those cyclepaths, then yes. You better start bike-dodging because those people that are not giving a fuck about those tourists walking there are people that have to deal with stupid tourists walking in front of their bike everyday. It's annoying to have it happen every once in a while, but when it's something you see daily, you kinda get the 'I'm tired of this, get the fuck outta my way' mentality.

      +Martin Adams I live in Utrecht, close to a hotel, and it's the exact same thing. I see tourists every day coming out of there, and stand in the middle of the bike lane. Often with their back to the traffic, consulting a map or just chatting.. if I'm cycling I shout "bike lane" at them. Simple message, but 99% still doesn't get it.. why not stand in the middle of a highway then? OR may I suggest a railroad? Bloody tourists.

      +martin Adams +keokiracerhalsteren I'm from the Netherlands as well and I have to say: Yes tourists do not know how cycling is "regulated" here. But the bigger problem is, cycling is NOT "regulated" in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a nightmare to drive in with a car, each and every cyclist will take the advantage when you cross roads. They know you will respect your car more than they respect their life.

    You make good points. About the food: you're right that the food is kind of mediocre. I'm Dutch myself, and I love the Dutch cuisine because I grew up with it and it feels like home, but from an objective perspective, in general the Dutch cuisine might be a bit... boring to tourists. For some even disgusting. In my opinion, the Mediterranean countries have the best cuisines in Europe, the Dutch cuisine is just not really that special. In all honesty, our Belgian neighbors do better.
    Also two personal tips for future visitors of Amsterdam:
    1. Take aspirins with you, or buy them. I come from the Dutch countryside so I'm used to fresher air, and every time I visit Amsterdam I have a huge headache at the end of the day because I am not used to the weed smell in there. Really uncomfortable, so just make sure that you have those with you, just in case your body reacts badly to it too.
    2. Book tickets online for the Anne Frank museum WAY before you visit Amsterdam. There is ALWAYS a giant line in front of the museum, no matter how early or late you get there. It can take hours before you'll finally enter, and that's just a waste of the day, and also very uncomfortable if you're there on a hot summer day. Make sure that you book tickets online, so you can just walk in without waiting too long. And make sure to do this EARLY. Ideally would be weeks / months before you arrive, because they are sold out very very quickly. And you're going to want to visit the Anne Frank museum, it's very impressive. Also the Rijksmuseum of course, my personal favorite museum of Amsterdam :) I've visited that one about 10 times already and I'm still not tired of it.
    And it's been said before, Amsterdam is a gorgeous and fun city, but it's indeed not representative of the Netherlands at all. Most ideally would be to stay in the Netherlands for a longer period of time and go to other cities like Delft, Utrecht, Groningen, Den Haag, Nijmegen, Maastricht, to visit (one of) the Wadden Islands (I've been to Terschelling myself, it's really really nice), see more of the country side, the Hoge Veluwe, the province of Limburg, which is a little less flat than the rest of the country ;) And to parks like Madurodam and the Efteling. It would take longer, but it will be worth it.
    Anyway, I wish future visitors a very nice time in Amsterdam / the Netherlands and hope you'll enjoy the trip!

      I disagree. I think the food in Amsterdam is mostly above average and some restaurants are excellent. The only place in Amsterdam where the food is bad, is near Centraal station and the most touristy of areas that can get away with being bad.
      The more off the beaten path you go, the better the quality of food and value too.

      Adam Graydon You might be right, but I was referring to the Dutch cuisine in general. Again, I personally love it because I grew up with it, but on the other hand I could understand foreigners when they think it's boring. It's quite a simple cuisine. Not bad, just... not special either. Espescially comparable to the French one, or Spanish or Greek. I think the Southern European countries are a little better at cooking. But that's my personal opinion! :)

    hmm, i have trouble buying the argument that 'yes there are some good restaurants but not where most tourists go'. ok, technically 'most tourists go' out from centraal station, but they wander a lot further than the damrak. even in heavily touristed areas like de wallen, rembrandtplein and leidseplein, you can find some fine places to eat. the difficulty talking about restaurants is that people have such widely different tastes, and different scales of what 'expensive' means. then too, it's possible to encounter a bad meal in a good restaurant, depending on luck. the subject is just kinda messy. all i can say is, for me as an ordinary guy, amsterdam has more good restaurants 'per capita' than any other city i've lived in.

    We've got the safest cyclisch paths ever, you'll never get hit by a bike, if you walk on the walking paths.So Dont walk on the red/pink paths because that are the cyclonen paths

    Amsterdam is actually one of the more safe cities in the world. It's much safer than most cities in other countries. And many tourists go to the wrong restaurants and there are a lot of wrong restaurants. Their just tourist traps.
    Oh and. Yeah the tourists that come for the drugs and prostitution can be annoying but the city center is still really cozy if you know the right places to go and the nice cafes.
    And the stairs can be scary. But when I was a kid I grew up climbing the same steep stairs. You just have to learn how to walk the stairs in Amsterdam. Because they are really steep.
    Btw your right about the bikers. To many people that don't know how to drive one. Especially the tourists are dangerous on bikes haha.

    you will be completely fine. Amsterdam "bad" is like 5th avenue at 2 pm in the afternoon bad :) so not bad at all, if i were you and going in April you might still get to see some of the tulips. take a bike tour outside of town or rent a bike and get a book telling you were to go on a bike outside of amsterdam. It really is beautiful and if you can get into the tulips and windwills you really will feel like you are seeing the real amsterdam

    I like your video's a lot! (it's a bit like travelling all over Europe just by watching your stuff)
    maybe you should make a new one about Amsterdam because A'dam has really been booming for the last 5 years. And maybe you could give a small description of the typical atmosphere that makes this city unique in the western world. This goes for historic architecture as well for the fact that A'dam is still a mirror for the fact that it became the first Republic in Europe , and that for a long time. The kind of free atmosphere there still has to do with the Dutch approach on
    things. (A'dam is like a time-machine)

    Thank you for this nice video! I agree with most of your points and Amsterdam certainly has a lot of beautiful museums. I would like to add that there are also a lot of interesting museums in the rest of the Netherlands. It's a small country so distances are short. Dutch cities like The Hague, Leiden, Delft, Breda, Den Bosch and Maastricht all have beautiful old centres, there are interesting museums everywhere and the atmosphere is less hectic than in Amsterdam. Best wishes!
