  • For most people, childhood seems far away from the person they’ve become. Death Doula Darnell Lamont Walker sees things differently. As a children’s television writer, he infuses qualities of curiosity, vulnerability, joy and empathy into the characters he creates. Qualities that he believes serve us well at the end of life.

I have thought about becoming a death doula for a while now. I have been in attendance to many family members and when I first graduated nursing, my first job was on a general medical ward, we had regular deaths. I was known on that ward as the angel of death, not in a bad way, but yes I did have a higher percentage of my patients die on my watch. It was like patients either felt comfortable and trusting of me when I was caring for them or I helped them facilitate to the other side. I’m not sure, but I have always treated my terminal patients with respect, dignity and love. I have experienced many beautiful moments and feel very privileged to have been able to be there with these people ❤
