Im a 52 year old puertorican man living in the island. Found Kate in the mid 80s in a late night music video program. She has really shaped the way i see what a song or an album can be as a musician myself. This was great fun. Thnxs!!
Kate Bush's Song Cloudbusting is based on a book about the life of Wilhelm Reich, the scientist who created mind-body therapy and the orgone machine. She read his son Peter's book called A Book of Dreams and it inspired her to write Cloudbusting.
I was eleven years old when an uncle of mine brought home Kate Bush's just-released single Babooshka, and I immediately fell in love with her. I listened to that song over and over until I learned the lyrics literally by heart, even though I could not speak or understand a word of English. The song is a Gothic novel in itself, and it harks back to Anne Radcliffe, Wilkie Collins et alii. Kate Bush, the queen of queer. Lover her.
I love this. I was one of those Kate Bush teenagers you imitated as well, glad it wasn't just me! You picked out a couple of references I wasn't aware of - I also assumed Cloudbusting was based on some documentary or historical footnote, I wasn't aware there was a specific book. I've just bought Arsenic and Old Lace and A Book of Dreams on Kindle, I'm interested to investigate more.
Thank you so much! And yes! Kate Bush teenagers unite! Yeah, it kind of blew my mind to realise that Cloudbusting was based on a book of a true story. It explains the music video a lot too! And yes! I’m excited to check out Arsenic and Old Lace- it sounds like it’s right up my street! I’d love to know how you get on with them both!
Yaaas! Thanks for doing this. Not a niche too far! Wonderful to hear about these. Sad you didn't wear your melted Kate shirt. 😂 If only Barbara Windsor made an appearance on that Shining-inspired song. I feel ashamed I came to Kate Bush quite late - in my early 20s. It was amazing seeing her live at the Apollo in 2014. Happy to see Mrs Engels on the book pile behind you. 📚
Haha, thank you! The Kate Bush t-shirt would have given her a kind of ‘zombie bride’ look that might have been somewhat off-putting 😂 But this is now just making me think that that means I deserve to treat myself to a new one! 😁 Can you imagine a Barbara Windsor/Kate Bush duet? Sort of ‘Carry on Kashka’. Ahhhh, you got to see her perform live! How was it? I was abroad at the time, but I’ve listened to the album from the concert, and it sounds *incredible*! Haha, yes, I’m going to finally get around to Mrs Engels soon (mostly also because I need to give it back to my friend) but I’m very excited to check it out! You’ve made it sound so good!
@@BobTheBookerer You definitely deserve a new Kate shirt! I have a fun one myself that my partner bought me as a present years ago and I showed off in this video I made way back in 2017: ruclips.net/video/D6xx51ecoIs/видео.html Carry on Kashka! 😂 The show was amazing and beautiful. Half of the fun was the excitement and palpable love for her I could feel from the audience. I hope you enjoy Mrs E though I worry I hype books too much sometimes so after my over-enthusiasm some people react like "what's the fuss about?" 😊
@@EricKarlAnderson Haha, thank you! I need you as my bank manager! That t-shirt is *incredible*! I love it so much! Ahhhh, I’m so glad it was so lovely! I cannot say that I can name a single song she has done, but I had no idea that she had so may literary references. I will turn on Hounds of Love. I am sure I have heard something by her, but cant think of it. Not knowing how to feel about Ulysses is exactly how you are supposed to feel about Ulysses haha.

Fantastic Bob! Learned some things and will be picking up that Kate Bush theory book if I can find a copy! I also think there is some Jungian theory in Kate’s songs, esp on Hounds of Love. And for your viewers who maybe want to sample a bunch of Kate if The Whole Story album is on music services it is a pretty good survey of her career. You won’t get the deep cuts but you’ll get Cloudbusting, Army Dreamers, Wuthering Heights, Hounds of Love etc.
Thank you so much! And yes, great point about the Jungian references- I hadn’t thought about that! Great shout! The Whole Story is a lovely introduction to her music! (Plus ‘Experiment IV’ is a little gem!)

Thanks Bob! Also there is a great essay on Kate Bush’s cinema called Moving: On the Cinema of Kate Bush by Willow Maclay on the Oscilloscope site’s Musings blog. Just in case you haven’t come across it in your travels.

I agree: people should listen more to Kate Bush! Thanks for this video which might be very informative for those who don't really know what this Lady deals with in her songs. You forgot to mention an important litterary reference as it comes from one of the most important books ever: the Bible. "The Song of Solomon" was inspired, of course, by the "Song of Songs" (or "Canticle of Canticles"), one of the books of the hebrew Bible. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_of_Songs You said that in "Aerial", there's no obvious litterary reference and you might be right as Kate Bush herself never mentionned anything about it. But the second disc "A sky of Honey" really reminds me of Virginia Woolf's work, especially "The Waves" in which the whole story entertwines with the description of the sun cycle as a metaphor for the cycle of life. I can also think of "Mrs Dalloway" (as said in the brilliant 2002 film "The Hours" by Stephen Daldry which was inspired by Michael Cunningham's book of the same name) which describes "a whole life in one day, one day and a whole life". I'm sure Kate Bush must have seen this great movie which deals with different aspects of artistic creation. I think you might be interested by a short (7' long) documentary about Kate Bush influences from british and japanese movies by french/german cultural TV channel Arte.
