    Question: How do you, or anyone else, know that this encounter with an Orca didn't inspire these kids to grow up and be conservationists? If I didn't have the interactions I did with Shamu when I was a kid I wouldn't have the respect and admiration I do now. Yes, there are very good reasons to not have them in captivity but to inspire the imagination of a child is something you can't foresee.

      @brittneyhernandez1083 3 года назад +9

      Watching a highly intelligent, far ranging marine mammal that thrives with its own kind, swim completely alone and seemingly bored inside a barren tank, shouldn't inspire anyone to keep these animals there. If anything, it should inspire to ensure others don't suffer the same fate.

    • @OrlandoOrca
      @OrlandoOrca 7 лет назад

      Skylar Jameson Zoos are not prisons. If it wasn't for zoos, many species would be extinct. For example the California Condor, they were close to extinction and a captive breeding program was set up to save them. Zoos are important for us to learn about animals and to help save them.

These beautiful creatures don't belong in a pool, they belong in the ocean with hundreds of miles of open water. In case you missed it in the film, when whales turn on their trainers it's because they are unhappy, certainly not because they are vicious. Whales in their natural habitat are the most gentle of creatures. Marineland and every other place like this needs to be shut down. It's time for these whales, dolphins, sea lions etc to be moved to a sanctuary because sadly captivity has ruined their chances of survival in their natural habitat. At least in a sanctuary they could live out the rest of their lives without having to perform to entertain the most disgusting of creatures....HUMANS.

    I would prefer they have bigger pools for them and other orcas to socialize with, but they do take that into consideration when caring for them. Most sociable animals are able to accept other creatures, including humans, as the members of their group, in this case, the whale's pod. I'm sure there are different biologists that think differently about it, but birds, great apes, and many others are species have demonstrated the ability to substitute humans as members and socialize with them.

He was moved to SeaWorld San Diego for training to sustain this, however he wasn't reunited with his mother at SeaWorld Orlando. The behavior is a sign of aggression. I recommend seeing the documentary Blackfish and stop going to Sea World. If you want more information on orcas (killer whales) behavior in the wild contra in captivity I recommend looking up Ric O'barry or seach FB for Free The Cetaceans.

    • @inkyorca2331
      @inkyorca2331 7 лет назад

      How is Ikaika being aggressive in any way, shape or form? Are you a killer whale expert and know all of this whale's behavior patterns? He is obviously just interested in the children at the glass. Whales use their mouths to interact since they don't have hands. They are very tactical animals. He interacts with his pod mates using his mouth, so he would obviously do it when interacting with any other creatures. He wasn't making any aggressive moves towards the children at all. Also, Ric O'barry is not a reliable source. He released two dolphins into the ocean illegally, and one of them died from it, the other brought close to death. Is that someone you really want to have around cetaceans ever again?

    • @rebeccaiversen3567
      @rebeccaiversen3567 7 лет назад

      To begin with I would recommend you to look up some research on Orcas. First of all you will find that Orcas are the larges of all DOLPHINS! belonging to the cetaceans family. You are absolutely correct that orcas, as well as whales, use their body to communicate but in this case the orca does not say "hi how are you, would you like to play?" aggression is a form of communication so I will not argue with you on that part.
      Regarding Ric O'barry I would recommend you to look up the transcripts of the accidents and deaths i Seaworld (trainers and orcas alike) Then please tell me how Seaworld has saved these animals life and how they are contributing to theis wellbeing compared to Ric O'barry.
      Finally: how would you like to spend your life? 60 years in a bathtub forced to make tricks to get food, or 10 years out of the tub deciding your own destiny?
      All the best

    • @inkyorca2331
      @inkyorca2331 7 лет назад

      I know full well that orcas are the largest species in the dolphin family. When I used the term "whales" I was referring to killer whales, since that is one of their titles.
      Once again, explain how this whale is acting aggressively. How do you know he (Or she, I'm not 100% sure if this is Kiska or Ikaika, but I believe it is Ikaika since the dorsal fin is quite tall for a cow) isn't saying "hi how are you, would you like to play?" Please explain all behaviors that are aggressive. He is slowly opening and closing his mouth and paying close attention to the children, examining them. He isn't making any quick movements and he isn't jaw popping. This video shows no aggression, just curiosity. Most interactions at the glass with whales involve exactly the same thing. The whale will come over and observe a person, usually opening and closing their mouths. Sometimes whales will also mimic people's movements or follow around an interaction toy they brought with them to the glass. This isn't just for orcas either, the same goes for all cetaceans.
      I know about every death that has occurred at SeaWorld. Only 1 was a trainer, her name was Dawn. The only other trainer death was a man named Alexis, and that was at a park called Loro Parque.
      SeaWorld did not save the lives of orcas. SeaWorld ripped orca calves from their families. It was gruesome and terrible. It is something that should have never, ever been done. I do not agree with it. No one who works at SeaWorld now agrees with it. I wish it hadn't happened. But the whales are in their care now, and there is nothing we can do about that. They no longer do wild captures. Only 4 of their 22 whales were captured from the wild.
      SeaWorld has rescued over 29,000 animals, more than any other facility. They have rehabilitated and released many, many animals, including dolphins. The only time they don't release an animal is when the government decided that the animal cannot be released. SeaWorld takes special care when rehabilitating animals, and they never get the animals used to human contact. Ric O'Barry literally dumped two dolphins who were not in any way, shape, or form suitable for release into the ocean. One of the dolphins died. Is that a person you want to stand for?
      No orca has spent 60 years in captivity. The oldest orcas in captivity are around 53- Corky and Lolita.
      The whales are not 'forced to make tricks to get food.' SeaWorld only uses operate conditioning, meaning they give the whale a reward when it does something correct and if it does something undesirable, they simply ignore it. If a whale doesn't preform or does a behavior (they are called behaviors, not tricks) wrong, it still receives all of the food it needs. You can find countless examples of this on RUclips. I have personally been to a show where the whales refused to preform and guess what happened? Nothing. The trainers came out and spoke about what was going on, and eventually the whales decided to start participating again.
      I would rather be a captive whale than a wild one. You don't have to hunt for food and you never miss a meal. You are constantly stimulated every single day with new things to do. You don't have to worry about getting hit by a boat, or eating something poisonous. And you don't have to worry about pollution. (If you weren't aware, killer whales are the most polluted animal on the planet.) Whales die from the PCBs in their blubber all the time.
      I accept the fact that in the past SeaWorld has made mistakes. Capturing whales and dolphins was a disgusting practice, but they stopped doing it over 35 years ago. Now SeaWorld is doing amazing, amazing things for the environment, and they take excellent care of the whales in their charge.

    • @rebeccaiversen3567
      @rebeccaiversen3567 7 лет назад

      Oh my god, I am amazed that you would rather be a captive orca than a free one. And of cause I know that no Orca has lived 60 years in captivity but I'm referring to the difference through at human lifespan. No captive orca has ever reached the average lifespan of wild orcas. I have to say that I think several Orcas would disagree and prefer life in the wild. Take Hugo who died from repeatedly banging his head agains the concert walls of the tank.
      Buy the way, when I refer to accidents I am not just referring to deaths but also near death accidents and aggressive behaviour towards both trainers and audience.
      You and I will never see eye to eye, through your page I see several captivity friendly pages. I know that you will never see the truth about the conditions of the dolphins. It is so obviously that the animals have stereotypic behaviour and behavior that has never been seen in the wild, like laying still ind the water for long periods of time. You wanting this destiny if you were a orca seems only sad to me.
      To think that the orcas (and other dolphins) have a good life in captivity is ignorance. I do not wish to go into further arguing with you but only hope that you one day will se that your money has contributed to cruelty towards these beautiful and intelligent animals and from that day on will stop your contribution to this industry.
      All the best from Denmark

    • @inkyorca2331
      @inkyorca2331 7 лет назад

      Killer whale and human lifespan can not be compared. We are totally different species.
      And many killer whales have reached the average lifespans of wild killer whales. The average for males is around 30 years and the average for females if around 50 years. 100 years is NOT the average lifespan. It is the longest lifespan that a whale could live. A dog can live for 29 years, but that doesn't mean every dog does, and it doesn't mean that every dog should.
      I agree that SeaWorld has problems. I agree that the whales do display stereotypical behaviors and SeaWorld always should be trying to improve their environment by giving them more mental stimulation. That does not mean captivity is all bad, and that does not mean that they suffer.
      I will never stop supporting SeaWorld and other accredited marine parks unless I have a valid reason to.
      Thank you for the wonderful conversation.

Dolphins also also open their mouths and laugh when intetacting with humans. Behaviour between them and is does not always have to be aggressive.
