Tremendous! The implications of this technology seem to be practical and immediately relevant to a lot of ongoing conservation work. A great talk! Will be sharing with this with everyone I know :) Well done by Karen Bakker

I have Budgies in my home for past 10 years there are unique sounds and actions produced by them and just by observing them i could tell wheter they are hungry or sad or happy and anything else but this process requires alot of time , observation and ability to think or feel what other species do in the situation.
@@marksavage8052 what if they were injured and needed help , calm down I have treated and save more than 150 species of birds in my surroundings and later they were left to sanctuary ok
One story I heard, Humans recorded the sounds of monkeys talking... giraffes ignored them. Then they recorded the monkeys when a lion entered the environment. Then that recording was playing the giraffes looked around and ran away...as if the giraffes knew the monkey word for "lion". ...so they ran away...even though no lions were near by...but the monkeys told them there was a lion, and the giraffes believed them. Because when it comes to hungry lions, it is better to be safe than stupid.
We have a lot to learn. We once thought we were the center of the universe, the sun circled us. It was a hard humbling experience to humans. Now to most people God made us, and only us, to his image. Accepting that we are wrong will be even harder than accepting that the stars don't care about us.
Mesmeris8ng and fascinating talk Thank you so much as this will certainly raise much more awareness thet thr h7man species must become true stewards 8n protecting and preserving the great tree of life
I bet the orca would have smarter things to say than some commenters who think they're oh soo witty and their sarcasm is without equal. Thankfully there're still people who use their ability to think to make better things possible.
Some animals are gonna be so mean with us and we deserve it haha but I wanna hear them so bad. Please let animals on ted talks, and can we start with dogs? Im pretty sure they need more rights.
I don't doubt the deep intelligence of the great mammals, whales, dolphins, orca.. I've spent a lot of time with them in the water.. What I'd like to know, is whether they think about or talk about anything more than the 4 F's. Great talk. Very interesting. Thank you.😊
Im pretty sure that if animals could speak they wouldnt have anything nice to say. Not thay their being mean but becuse of what we have dome to their home
Just a thought...it seems with every gift, becomes a curse. Unless every technology is choosen the correct operator, can become a curse, if handled in the hands of the improper operator. Rite?
Every so called "scientist" that does not see that the universe is a living thing is just a mechanic. His mind can only process the obvious parts of life before his eyes. Everything is alive. Life does not end at the other side of a cell's membrane. A city is an organism too. There is no isolated system in the universe. It's systems within systems, overlapping each other. God is life itself. Everything in life is connected. We are part of a greater being. Religions are just different languages, they are an attempt to communicate this insight to other humans. With science getting more and more of the picture (macrocosm, microcosm), and people getting educated about it, it will be easier and easier for everyone to understand it. For that:☮️, you have to see this:☯️
Reminds me of the second episode of Scott Z. Burns' "Extrapolations". I'm somewhat sceptical whether this hypothetical technology is really going to be implemented and if so: whether it's going to truly benefit anyone. But I guess I I keep underestimating humanity's desire to communicate with non-human species.
the big question is when you can know or communicate with animals, then what will you eat? can you eat the fish when he screams at you hey please don't eat me ? or other animals scream at you?. so please don't make the future with a stupid scientific perspective or way that can harm human civilization. if you don't fully recognize yourself then don't try to recognize others and make them yourself live life correctly as the truth should be
Humans are not enough that you're not sparing other species! *for your own species' survival in this very planet, just be content with what you have and can do, do not surpass the limit*
While it's wonderful to know that these findings aren't just from the great imaginations of film writers, poets, authors, song writers and artists ... it's disheartening to think how some in history have used technology to harm people, creatures ...
We are still harpooning these whales to extinction. Just go an see the whale ships in the southern ocean. One of the most advanced country (?) is adamant in killing these beautiful creatures.
Orcas can't seem to learn that propellers are very dangerous.. It seems unlikely they could rise to the occasion of giving a Ted talk.. Good stuff, though..

This is going to be so cool, and internet 10 second attention span funtimes. Man oh man !, the HUGE profits from advertising entertainment.
If a dolphin, gorilla, or orca can give a Ted talk, then I want to hear it. That might be the most important Ted talk of all time.
Mathewwriter. I Totally agree!! I want to hear it too!
@Lomogrammatonand then the Orca turned to Dolphin and said "Put another Chimp on the barby"
@Lomogrammaton Animorphs book number 36.
Some studies have indicated that dolphins have whistles for specific others. Maybe with some probing we could find the mechanisms of their language
There is a video of a Gorilla Speaking to humans through sign language. He pretty much gave a ted talk without being invited. 🦍
RIP. You were an incredibly talented and intelligent researcher. Also, your voice was so soothing.
oh man gone too soon
RIP Karen. Honestly that's the best TED speech ever. ...ideas worth spreading. Bravo
What an honour it is to be able to hear other species and the planet. I could listen to this all day. Thank you for sharing this ❤
Was so happy to see this live. What an amazing talk.
RIP Karen Bakker. Thank you for sharing your wonderful science with us. You've been an inspiration and will not be forgotten.
One of the best TED talks i've watched

Which is why many people believe that if souls are real, Humans aren't the only ones with souls.

One of the worst things in the world is captive birds. You should be ashamed.

That’s just about amazing and makes so much sense. Animals have evolved over millions of years right?
Great TED Talk! I love hearing the sounds of the different species!
her voice is so calm and understanding
Bhai, she sadly passed away last month. So, regrettably, we now have to say that her voice *was* incredibly soothing.
Her voice is very calm but powerful. The best voice for this subject.
Truly one of the best Ted Talks I’ve ever seen!!
Then we can have an International Interspecies translator 😊❤
I can’t imagine 100 years from now there is a murder case trying to be solved and the lead witness to it all is a bird or a cat lmfao
also could be an ant which was passing by😂
That's already happened, except the witness was a plant.

favorite ted talk of all time.
ABSOLUTELY Profound! That is why this is a 'must' TED talk
Kinda of headline I'd expect from The Guardian or The Onion.
Those two very different types of media
Além do maravilhoso tema q ela expôs, q voz esplêndida ela tem!🎉🎉🎉❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
THAT was amazing, thank you
5:32 That was deep!!
And here I am, speechless.
❤
Love how she shows both risks and potential. Very open-minded 🙏
What an amazing video. So interesting. The possabilities are endless
She has this wonderful voice and it's a very interesting topic.
Well, she *had* a wonderful voice. Sadly, she left us last month.
Tenia rato que no escuchaba una Ted Talk que me hiciera sentir feliz! 🌎💚

This says a lot more about TED talks than it says about animal intelligence.
Star Trek The Voyage Home comes to mind.
I fell asleep before the orca came on. Her voice is very soft and soothing
She peacefully drifted into eternal slumber last month, you know? So, now we must write about her in the past tense.
Crazy Ted Talk really really great!
I love this. Thank you.
Amazing talk 👍👏👏👏
thank GOODNESS for finally enacting a 'simple' solution to protect whales and their pods and ranges they travel!
Hard to explain in comment form how happy I am about this

I would love to interview this lady.
I want to hear an Orca tell me that his father was poor, but honest.
Love this 🎉
Leave the Queen Bee in peace! She doesnt need AI to intrrfere with natural intelligence older than human existence!
What is the name of that elephant sound dictionary?
Mind blowing!

Studying ocean whales for their characteristics for years resulted in them attacking boats for some reason.
You sound confused.

I’d really love to know what you think about veganism 😅
I don't think you'll ever hear from her. She had sadly passed away before you asked this question.
What about veganism?
Imagine having a conversation with another species 🤯
Tell me you've never spoken to a woman without telling me you've never spoken to a woman.
One day we can make school for whales and orcas.

I got all the way to 10:20 before she said "climate change" and I had to stop watching.
Why? It's a real problem, besides she only talks about climate change and noise pollution for like 10 seconds
