Bad Apple on Noritake VFD

  • "Bad Apple!!" playing on a vacuum fluorescent display.
    The display is connected to the PC via the parallel port.
    This is the Pokemon Mini homebrew version, running on an emulator.
    I modified the emulator so the video output is redirected to the VFD display.
    Since the resolution of the Pokemon Mini is 96x64 and that of the VFD is 128x64, the output had to be stretched.

    This is legendary, VFDs shall live on (even though they cost like 200$)

      Update, 3 years later: Still have not gotten said display to light up a single pixel, seems that the parallel protocol for it is not as simple as I had hoped.

      @@acerousgeo lmao ah yes, my friend had success getting one working in the SPI mode, I have not got around to messing with it but at least we know they do work now. I'll have to find a suitable project for one and try again, perhaps in another 3 years I'll have a PIC library written.

    Hello!
    I would like to drive a noritake VFD GU256x128C-3900B model from a parallel port, but my computer pridictably does not have one. Is there any workaround?
