Grew up in the 70's with my dad and then my brother working as mechanics for Ryder. I always loved hanging out at the shop and talking to all the drivers. Really loved it when we would go on a service call and had to take a sub tractor out on a call. This slide show brings back so many memories. Thanks.

Double bottom dumps: ie /gravel trailers. Up here in western Canada, we call them ' belly ' dumps. Some, can close under load (air cylinder rams) and some, CANNOT. There are 2 basic types, the ' clam ' belly dump, where the 'clam' is two huge half-moon steel rounds, open by air or hydraulic rams. These, are IN LINE WITH THE length of the trailer, on the bottom. Very good, for dropping hot asphalt aggregate, in a nice long, neat row, in the middle of the road paving process, for the paver. I operated, both types of belly dumps; those that CANNOT close under load, and those THAT CAN, width-wise for gravelling gravel roads, and hot asphalt aggregate. (keep that AC on ! )

Imagine if Swift still pulled doubles with all the steering wheel holders and unexperienced noobs they hire today

They still do in California and in Utah and Nevada they pull double 45s. In Oregon Washington Idaho Utah they drive 4 axle trucks with 4 axle trailers that can gross 105,500
