2006 World Series (Tigers @ Cardinals) Game Five (Cards win first World Series Since 1982)

  • It wasn't the most thrilling of World Series'.
In fact, if you weren't a Cardinals or Tigers fan, it was probably a tad on the boring side.
But, it didn't matter. Finally, after 24 years of waiting, the Cardinals were once again World Series Champions.
After failing to capture the title with what was undoubtedly the best Cardinals team since the 1940s in 2004, and again failing to do so with another 100-win team in 2005, the beat-up, knocked down, underperforming, somewhat undermanned, 83-win 2006 Cardinals somehow managed to take home the crown.
A personal anecdote: I called my brother the day the 2006 postseason started, and discussed with him how we thought the Cardinals would fare. Neither of us seriously thought that they'd be hosting a parade three weeks later, but I distinctly remember saying to him, "Wouldn't it be poetic justice if the 105-win '04 team, and the 100 team from last year can't get it done, but this 83-win piece of crap wins the whole thing?" We had a good laugh ... and then they actually did it.

I come back to watch this game every now and then because it was a very joyful spot in my life during a very dark year for my family, I had lost my great grandfather due to a staph infection, we lost my sister's dad just 4 days before my birthday due to something that should've never happened, I had my head busted open on accident and nearly died, all of this when I was 5 years old and I still somehow remember this entire playoff run, all I felt was joy because something that year went right, I went to my first ever cardinal game in 2006 as well but this was more special than one kid having a bad year could ask for, been a cardinal fan as long as I can remember.

I remember this whole series, worried from the beginning, watching the Cardinals fumble their way into , well, nothing other than good luck and bad plays by other teams making their short comings seem like super stars. I remember thinking the Mets series was a disaster and the end, then I was surprised. Shifting worry to Tigers and Verlander, but watching their mistakes generate runs for us and opportunity, to then jump up in victory on that final pitch by Wainwright, thinking, "Man, that was a hard fought battle, and we did it!"

I read your description before I watched this video. It is ironic how in sports, teams who barely get into the playoffs come out as World Champions. 06 Cards, 2011 NY Giants, etc. Sports, IMO, has become less about who is the better overall team from start to finish and more about who gets hot at the right time. When you're a fan of a team and they're fighting for a championship, you forget about it but then, when you look back, there's like this feeling of "Was it legit?" It's a no brainer that the 04 Cards were the best of the 3 year stretch. Sadly, they went up against a Red Sox team that was on a hot streak.

  • @danzemacabre8899

This Cards team was much better than their record. Pujols, Rolen , Edmonds, all missed time, lost Isringhausen, etc. Having Carp healthy and getting Weaver at the deadline, plus bringing Waino up and Rolen (hurt, but playing) and Edmonds back made this team, by playoff time, better than the 100+ win teams of 2004 or 2005. Larussa managed like a damn wizard also. Labeling this team as worst to ever win a world series is laughable and anyone who studies and knows the game, knows this wasn't the case.

As a dedicated, life-long Cardinals fan, I gotta say ... I completely disagree with your assessment that this team was better at any point, or in any way, shape, or form, than the '04 or '05 teams. Those teams, especially the '04 squad, were juggernauts. The 2006 Cardinals showed serious signs of age-related decline all year, and while injuries definitely played a factor in their overall record, that just weren't that good to begin with. They had losing records against the 96-loss Cubs, the below .500 Reds, and the 82-80 Astros. They were 13 games under .500 on the road. They were 11 games below .500 from late July to the end of the regular season. They nearly blew a 7-game divisional lead with 11 games to play. They got 24.2 WAR from their offense, and 6.1 from their pitchers. By contrast, the '04 team got 31.4 WAR from their offense, and 16.0 from their pitchers. That's 17.1 more WAR for the 2004 Cardinals. There's no statistic, or eye test, that would tell you that the '06 team was better.
When you win a World Series with a team like the 2006 Cardinals, it becomes a convenient narrative to say, "Oh, well, they weren't as bad as their record because of the injuries," but that ignores the reality that when healthy, most of the "big guys" had down years. There were five teams with better records than the Cardinals that didn't even make the playoffs. They played in, by far, the worst division in baseball, and would have finished no higher than 3rd in any other division. They got in, got hot at the right time, caught a few breaks along the way, had some young guys step up, and due to the magic of October baseball, pulled off a miracle. It was a fun ride, and I think the fact that they WEREN'T that good made it even more thrilling, and enjoyable. "Wait, the '04 and '05 teams didn't win the World Series, but this piece of shit team did?!"
They're probably not THE worst team ever to win a World Series, but they'd be in my top 5 or 6, for sure.

I've got a couple games from '07, and '08 that I'll be posting. In general, there weren't a ton of happy moments in 2007, but '08 wasn't as bad as you might think. They weren't expected to do anything that year, and yet they were in contention for the Wild Card (albeit loosely) until about two weeks were left in the season.

The three highlights that come to my mind from those two years:
      1) a big inning against David Wells in the latter half of the '07 season
      2) last day of '07, a record number of pitchers in a nine-inning game, including the first-time starter with the most relief appearances before that
      3) We were at the 6/21/08 game in Fenway Park when they beat up on Dice-K.

Out of all the Cardinals teams since 2000, this Cardinals team had the 3rd worst record and yet somehow managed to pull together and win the World Series. You could argue that this team was the worst one because in 2007 and 2017 the Cardinals had a much more competitive NL Central to deal with. Even the 2008 4th place Cardinals had a better record. Nobody favored these guys to win and some people said the Tigers would win in 3 games.

You could throw a few more in there.
In 1981 the Cardinals had the best record in the NL East, but given the players strike, the playoffs were structured different leaving the Cardinals and Reds out of the playoffs even though they had the best records in their divisions. (Fun fact: This is the Montreal Expos' only playoff appearance and it was only because of the adjusted seeding.)
In 1996 the Cardinals were up 3 games to 1 in the NLCS against the Braves and they choked hard getting outscored 32-1 in the last 3 games. Nobody favored the Cardinals to win this series and many were even surprised the Cardinals made the playoffs because they had just started rebuilding the organization.
2013 was a year the Cardinals made the World Series, but we lost in 6 games. Some of those games ended in the most crazy ways like with interference and a pick off.
Anything can happen though. It's fun to think about what could have been, but at the end of the day it's a crazy game where anything can happen. Thats why I love Baseball. I'm sure lots of people thought 2006 was going to be a subway series rematch, but in the end it was a Wild Card team vs a team with only 83 wins.
