Top 10 Free Apps and Websites for Learning Chinese!

  • Today we're reviewing the best FREE apps for learning Chinese (mostly Mandarin, though you could use a few of these for other varieties of Chinese). They're all amazing and all things I've personally used extensively -- I've had to leave out some things like Memrise that I've heard amazing things about, only because I haven't used them enough to feel confident in recommending them. And no endorsements either!
Note also that even if you're not learning Chinese, you CAN use several of these apps and websites (including the #1 pick) for learning other languages, and my choices also might be interesting in terms of expressing how I've studied Chinese.
Thanks for visiting Ari in Beijing! I've honed my Mandarin Chinese to near native-level fluency through a variety of tips and tricks that I share with you each week. So whether you're studying Mandarin, Cantonese, English, another language, or are simply interested in language in general, please subscribe and stick around for a while!

    Hi Ari,
First of all, a huge thank you, you've helped me so much I can't really express how much excited I am right now. Again, thank you so much : D
Now, here is my question: "I'm trying to learn Mandarin at the moment, but I'm still not able to read/understand anything. Since I just downloaded ximalaya and I'm planning to listen some podcasts, how can I be sure not to waste my time on Cantonese or any other variety of Chinese (especially since many Chinese dialects happen to be a completely separate language)??? "
    Again, a HUGE thank you

I tried Anki but found the Pleco flashcard system more useful. I know Anki's SBS works better, but what you can do with Pleco is much more useful. When I come across a word I don't immediately recognize, I open up the word in the dictionary and add anywhere from three to six phrases that use that word into the flashcard folder I'm working on. So I will start with about 20 words, and then within a day I'll probably easily recognize half of them. The 10 I'm struggling with, I will add a couple phrase that use characters I'm familiar with. (I'm now upper intermediate) I would not use this for absolute beginners. But once you know 300 - 500 characters, it works well.

Weird random question that's only 3 1/2 years late... on the topic of flashcards, for a native English speaker looking to learn Mandarin, I was planning on doing this:
I would make 2 completely distinct sets of flashcards: a beginner set where the front is the character and the phonetic spelling (in Mandarin) with the back in English and then a more advanced set where it's the character on the front with just the phonetic spelling on the back (and maybe even a third middle set which is character on front/phonetic+English on back). The idea being that whenever I add a word to one of the sets, I would add it to the other one too. I guess the idea is that the beginner set is very helpful in beginning to gain a recognition for characters but still trying to grow my speaking vocabulary, whereas the more advanced one is solely for the purpose of reading/writing at that point once my spoken vocabulary has improved.
Does that make any sense? Or is that a waste of time/is there a better way? Thank you so much for any help in advance :)))

These seem like great resources once you already know the basic structure and vocabulary of the language, but not for initially learning. I've attempted to learn Chinese several times in my life and what always derails me is the monotony of learning words and feeling like I can't use them at all. Last time I went through half of the Chinese Skill lessons app when they were free, invested at least dozens of hours into an app called Influent on steam and I couldn't even read a children's book. And I don't just mean I couldn't read parts of it. I mean I couldn't read nearly a single damn word in Chinese children's book after already being able to recognize hundreds of characters. The road to just being able to even look up words in Chinese by entering in pinyin in my cell phone was a difficult one to go down. Again, I appreciate the resources, but I would exactly say this list is for learning Chinese, but rather for using as a reference for people who already know some Chinese.
