      Thanks! I’ve harvested all the corn and I left the stalks. I like the sound they make when the breeze blows.

    Great info. I just stumbled across this today. Our growing conditions here in Fresno are pretty much the same as yours I think. (I’m in Zone 9). Long, hot summers with 30 to 45 days where we exceed 100° every day.

    Great video. We just got some chickens and I'm getting ready to grow some corn again. This was an awesome and very helpful video. I always have a little trouble here in Florida when growing corn.

    I commented a couple months ago my problem with the sweet corn the ears are small in diameter the length is okay what would cause that?
    I planted in a 4' by 4' raised bed a total of 25 plants that is 5 rows I spaced the seeding 8 inches apart. What do you think the problem could be I appreciate any suggestion you may have. Thank You

      Hello! When planting in that density, the soil needs to be well prepared, and regular fertilization essential for vigorous growth. The amount of sun exposure and regular moisture will also be vital for optimal development.

      @@newgardenroad Thinking back prior to planting I formed by 4' by 4' frame I did'nt roto till the ground first I just layed the frame down filled it up with compost, and manure, and planted. I think some of the problem could had been by not first roto tilling the ground below the compost, and manure it was hard. So what I am going to do is clear my space roto tilled the ground and then put the frame down and compost, and manure then plant. Thank You

    My corn plants are about 4 inches in height now is it okay to use a fish emulsion fertilizer of 5-1-1 for there first feeding?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  3 года назад

      Yes, that will give them a good dose of nitrogen to encourage top growth.

    Love your videos. I’m in north central texas also and have just really started this journey. Have any tips on cantaloupe or just general tips. I made my own soil with composted manure, peat, and potting mix. I put old wood and straw in the bottom of my half barrels and them my soil 🤷‍♂️. Corn is an inch tall today!! Thanks again

      @newgardenroad  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! Cantaloupe should receive consistent moisture particularly when they begin to set fruit, but aim for slow and deep watering and allow the top two inches of soil to dry before watering again. Avoid spraying water on the foliage, and consider regular applications of liquid seaweed. 👍🏼✨

      Can I put down straw or pine straw while plants are still small? Onions, peas, corn, carrots etc,? Should I worry about covering the baby plants!

    I planted sugar enhanced (se) and standard sugar (su) corn together in one 4x6 before I learned about the danger of cross pollination. 😭 I really don't want to pull them out unless it's recommended. What should I do??? ⁉️⁉️⁉️

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  3 года назад +1

      Hello! To the best of my knowledge the issues from cross pollination occur when growing sweet corn in proximity to field corn or ornamental corn, and can compromise the flavor. If you're saving seeds the results will vary as well. I'd say keep on growing!

    • @ttb1513
      @ttb1513 3 года назад +1

      I’ve read that cross pollination with corn affects the taste of THIS year’s crop because it is the seed we eat. If you were able to plant already and can distinguish the 2 varieties, you could possibly remove one variety now and immediately replant it, assuming both are one month old and have similar maturity dates. If you create a distinct pollination windows for each variety, problem solved.
      Thanks for the heads up about corn!

    But they need too much water, drought going on 3 years plus now...what is the answer Thanks

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Год назад +1

      There are varieties of corn more suited to drought conditions, I wouldn't expect to grow a sweet corn, but likely a dent or flour corn. www.southernexposure.com/categories/dent-flint-flour-corn/
      I would also research trench composting as a way to capture and retain moisture when it does rain. When done alongside raised beds, crops can access that moisture with deep roots through drought conditions.
      I hope that helps!

    What brand of liquid seaweed do you prefer?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  4 года назад

      I have used Maxicrop for a long time, and recently Kelp Me, Kelp You from Foxfarm. They're both quality products. I also like the soluble seaweed from Maxicrop, it takes a little work to mix, but it's more economical.
