I just serviced one of these. It's a really nice machine as long as that gear holds together. So solid and smooth... I admit to being a rotary hook fan...

@@JohnBau those gears are usually going to break early on, I think, when they are defective from the start. If they’ve lasted this long, I’m guessing they were made properly, and aren’t going to fail. We’re finding that some plastic parts producers were hurrying their processes and not following recommended procedures that resulted in failed plastic (nylon) parts.
Honda has had to recall many new lawnmowers and other small machinery that had engine parts with bad nylon components. Subcontractors we’re at fault, but Honda takes the hit.
Trying to cut corners and make things on the cheap, usually has a sad ending.

Any issues that arise will be solvable as long as the drive gears are intact. If they haven’t broken by now, you’ll be ok if you stay off heavy denim and such.
The gears that were defective, usually failed right away. Good luck 🍀

That’s called “pulling the rabbit out of the hat” in mechanics terms. Be on the hunt for something close in size, then manipulate it to fit.
The feeling of accomplishment once it’s working, is kinda awesome.👍😎

Love your channel. Always so helpful when I'm using my Kenmore machines. Recently, I purchased a Kenmore 158.1813 for super cheap so I had to get it. I noticed under the top lid around the bobbin winder this black powder almost like dirt all up in there. Doesn't seem normal to me. Have you come across anything like that? I'm trying my best to clean it all up since it's on the motor as well. Also, do have any tips on cleaning up old oil stains? Thanks!

    • @randyyoursewingmachineman9954
      @randyyoursewingmachineman9954  Год назад +1

That dust is usually from the bobbin winder wheel being ground down by the inside of the hand wheel.
It needs a drop of oil on the winder axle that spins the rubber wheel.
Don’t oil the rubber area. It relies on friction to operate.
Check the rubber winder wheel to see if it has a flat spot.
If so, slip it off and install another one.
If it has a flat spot, it will make a racket like you can’t believe.
Old oil stains can be removed with some rubbing alcohol and plenty of rubbing. 😎

What are your thoughts on the 158.15150 or 158.1914? The 1914 seems to have a ton of external plastic but I'm told its all metal inside.

Those plastic gears may still look perfect but at 50y old the plastic is now as strong as hardened cheese. It is waiting to break at the first machine jam. Would not bet on such machine, unless it's for sentimental reason.

If the gear isn’t broken, it probably won’t break if you’re careful.
The defective ones are rare, but they’re usually already broken by now.
