I don't think this title was made for you.
My 9 year old son went through just the very first tutorial to see the mechanics, then was building his own games... about 15 minutes after first firing it up.
He had used Scratch a couple times before that, but otherwise had no coding experience at all.
Now he's interested and is learning the basics. I don't think he would have gotten into the more advanced game makers. Now he can move onto one of the others when he is ready.

It makes sense as a Nintendo product. Nintendo isn’t selling you a game engine, they’re selling you a *game.* Figuring out how to make fun things happen within the nodon’s limits is where the entertainment value comes from.
It’s a very _Nintendo_ concept. You’re so limited in art and scope that you really have no choice but to focus on gameplay. String a few nodons together until you arrive at something that’s fun to do, and then build out that concept within your limits. You’ll never build something polished that’s ready to sell on Steam or the App Store, but it’s a surprisingly accessible way to dabble in gameplay concepts and play around with what’s fun to do as a player.

Game Builder Garage is primarily designed to introduce players to the basics of game development through fun and accessible tools. While it offers a great platform for learning and experimentation, it may not be as robust or flexible as a professional game development software like Unity or Unreal Engine. However, for beginners or those looking to explore game design concepts without diving into complex coding or intricate systems, Game Builder Garage can be an excellent starting point. It's more about learning principles and having fun than serious, professional-grade game development.

Before I watch ill say, im serious about game development, as I do want it to be my job someday (relatively soon even, within around three years or so), but I bought it immeidately knowing that it isnt for people who are serious about game devleopment. I honestly think the best way to lean game devleopment is to hunker down and just make games. Id recommend unreal engine since its pretty much the industry standard, but you might have a more fun time with Unity, which is a close second. (but you know that, and mention it in the video) I personally learned game design on gamemaker studio, and I dont regret it, but at this point I really wish I knew UE4 better than I do. Either way.... Game builder garrage seems like a fun distraction for me... whenever I get to messing with it more. Like any gamer I have a big backlog.
0:55 you know what they say, limitation invites creativity.
4:10 for people starting out, this is a good thing honestly. The #1 killer of games is a large scope. Force players to have a small scope, to the point where all they can produce is a proof of concept... Thats a good thing. It will get them familiar with game design quicker. When they've gotten all they can out of this game and think "yeah I could actually do this." then this game will have prepared them for real game design on a real engine.
6:14 im not sure it set out to teach *programming* necessarily, as much as it is training wheels for game development in general. A way for kids to get into it without it seeming too intimidating.
6:37 I think I can agree with that part. The point of this game is to be intuitive to figure out to teach kids about game development, right? So why is it so weird with this back and forth?
7:40 that is a good point.
8:26 that goes back to the scope being limited being a good thing. Yes, these other engines can do a lot more, but thats not the point of game builder garage. And honestly I never expected it to be the point of it. Its a nintendo game, its going to be limited to the strangest degree, its going to put that "limitation invites creativity" idea to the maximum.
10:08 that is also a good point, I honestly hadnt thought of that. Personally, I am going to unreal/unity first, and, again just using this game as a fun distraction. But yeah, I defenitely agree, while in concept limiting the scope is a good idea, since a great deal of those skills wont cary over to unity or unreal, it doesnt make that much sense to start here.
11:50 my plan is to learn unity and unreal at the same time as well... Focusing on unreal. And I do have some experience in Unreal, but I dont know that much about it. Defenitely dont have that much time for game builder garage while im learning it.

That's a good assessment. I'll offer another if I may. I'm sat with my 8yr old now creating a "Sonic the Hedgehog" game. Will it make it easier for him to learn Unity or Lua? No. Will it help him understand the principles of objects, actions and routines that (once he's learned Lua or C#/C++) will help in the world of Unity etc? I think so. I can clearly see parallels between what he's doing with GBG (the mental processes) and what I do with ZIL.

GBG has its issues. Lack of community features, confusing documentation, a handful of 'missing' nodon, and a decent chunk of underdeveloped tools, not to mention probably being a little too out of depth with its intended audience. That said, not providing enough tools to create fully fledged ideas and creations is not one of those failings. If anything, it was pretty clearly advertised in this way. It also was pretty clearly not meant to provide an 'on ramp' to more complex game design projects. It gamifies the process of learning logic, programming concepts, and game design in general by making it feel approachable and light hearted. Its learning toy centric advertisements are pretty clear about this especially compared to that of Dreams with ads depicting dozens of varied concepts showcasing the depth of its toolkit.

I fully agree with your opinion. I was thinking of a paradox with platforms like Scratch or GBG. They make more people do “gamedev” but lots are stuck with platform’s limitations. The lower barrier to entry platform has, the more limitations it has. It’s fine for people that just wanna play around, but people that could do more with right tools could be stuck without knowing what to switch to, wasting their time for nothing, thinking of creative workarounds.
The answer may be having something built on top of another powerful engine. Core is the example. You can easily create games with Core, but if you hit the limit, you just switch to pure UE. It might not work if abstraction of UE and Core are very different, but that’s just an example, I didn’t even ever used Core. The better example may be Bolt in Unity.

I feel like the point of GBG itself is less for you to really get into game development and more for you to practice some of the general concepts that you'll be using a lot once you truly do get into it. Possibly the reason why this is only $30 is to act as a supplement to what your already doing rather than a replacement and speaking as somebody who does use unity and the like, I can see myself getting some mileage out of this despite how cumbersome it can be at times.
Having a game development tool on the go is a pretty huge plus (if the steam deck ends up letting me run Unity on it however, that's probably gonna be a GG for this though lol) but I will admit that several times throughout my time using this I was missing a lot of the QoL features and capabilities that Dreams has.

It's a shame because even if you're not serious about making games (yet), it feels like this is nothing more than a cute distraction but hardly a worthwhile tool compared to the myriad number of options out there.

For those interested in GBG, the game does a solid job introducing absolute beginners to the idea and concepts of game design.
The video isn’t entirely wrong since it is true that GBG has extreme limitations compared to other game engines like Unity and Unreal, but if this is your very first time even dabbling in game design, it’s a nice start.
The nodons and basic game building skills you’ll learn in GBG can be brought with you when you decide to finally jump into game design.
Just like any skill, there will be a learning curve once you’ve jumped to a more sophisticated engine, but you’ll be familiar with the idea of visual scripts and game concepts that you can try out on game engines after familiarizing yourself with its UI, controls, etc.
There are so many cool creations in GBG that you can see around the internet, and it’s a nice start if you’re a beginner.

In dreams the fact that you can create your own models, audio, music, pixels that doesn’t look janky, films, games, makes it better, not only that Dreams has vr, couch coop 4 - players, soon will have online multiplayer, community jams (mm chooses a topic and we make something out of it), badges, our own profile, all it takes to make something is patience and learning the tools...(But I understand coming from a garage makers view, Dreams is on ps4, garage maker is on Nintendo, many may compare both, both are educational, both are fun makers, the only way to solve this issue is by making a video about the beef between Dreams vs Garage Maker 🤣✍🏽

Personally Dreams is alot better than game builder garage also in price tag
GBG is a neat game for people new to making games but it does have limitations
Sure the game does have a game swap nodon but the problem is how limiting
you still have to transfer the nodons that most of the game that takes up
(I maybe wrong) but im guessing you cant have data of nodons go between games
Ie you cant keep coins from Game A and game swap to Game B
Dreams is also new for people, however its more serious of a game maker than GBG
you dont have major limitations limiting creatifity
Its not just nodons, you can make and share objects, whole scripts, textures, songs ect all in basically a workshop
Scratch another game maker, has alot of simlair elements of game builder expect without most of the issues
(At the end of the day im salty that GBG costs more than Dreams lol)

Yes, this game is definitely good for making concepts in. Just be aware it does have it's limits, however it should get you in the general mindset of what coding is about. Also, little side note, top-down games are some of the more simple games to make, and there are plenty of tutorials for them online for when you do get a PC.

It’s game design principles you learn here regardless which are still handy. This is still a game MAKER at the end of the day (although you could still make basic tools like calculator if you really want I guess). Game ENGINES are obviously more advanced. We can’t dismiss stepping stones like this.

If this had MUCH, MUCH, more Nodon and connections, games that have multiple parts could be downloaded in 1, more space for games and being able to use the GBG website IN the game, this would be perfect. Overall, it’s a good game, but it’s mostly for minor or basic games. Unless your insanely dedicated to make a REALLY LONG GBG game through multiple parts, it’s not really all the good for making a long lasting game. I still do enjoy it, and the fact it simplifies usually complex ways of coding shows it has some potential in my eyes.

I've bought this for my kids, in fact I'm sat here with them now trying to work out how to end a game by touching an object - I stumbled across your video en route. So, GBG learns the basic associations of IF X HAPPENS TO Y THEN Z. This is no different in terms of logic to my coding in ZIL (a LISP language). It's not meant to be a colourful alternative to Unity or even Visual Lua. It let's them design a character, design a level, code some logic using Nodons (actions, objects and routines) for things to happen.

Why would you think it was? There is no point comparing a game builder for kids, to a game engine used in professional fields. It's meant to be fun, not meant for a tool to make your next big game. Rather just to make smaller prototype-like games. GBG is a lot like Pico 8. I don't think Pico 8 was ever made for serious developers. Rather it's a fantasy computer that allows you to easily create fun prototypes.

I’m only 14 but, in my opinion, I think I’m a pretty decent level designer. I think this is a good game to help me improve on level design, but DEFINITELY not coding. I 100% agree that GBG is one of the weakest game making tool kits out there, but I’m so young and even though I want to become a game maker when I get older, I think I should just stick with the super simple game making tool kits for a little bit and then start learning how to use more advanced tool kits out there such as Unity.

  • @Rockyandfan
    @Rockyandfan 3 года назад

Personally, I feel like this is a tool for young designers to learn new concepts in coding. I have taken JavaScript before, yet some of this still helped me learn their modern equivalents. So is it a waste? Depends from person to person. A professional designers? Yes, you’d be better off actually creating games. But a child/teenager who would love to code someday? No, and this could feel like a tool to use for learning, kind of like a Scratch clone, but with some concepts dropped for new ones.

    • @Rockyandfan
      @Rockyandfan 3 года назад

Honestly, I think games like Dream and GBG could help introduce people to coding, since many don’t attempt learning, even though it can serve yourself even without a computer. I was making a game on here to test its capabilities, and I needed to learn how to make walk cycles. After a tutorial, it made sense, even with the limitations of the game. If a kid was introduced to games like these, I feel it could introduce them to more formal engines like Unreal or Unity.

I’m 13, I know C#, C++ and gdscript and I think the platform isn’t very good for teaching any coding except for basic variables and constants, which are taught in basic algebra anyways. I think a lot of people could have more fun on roblox studio than GBG because it’s user friendly and easier to learn. It also uses a coding language called Lua that is a good starter language for younger people and new coders.

Clearly no one is going to become a serious game builder garage game maker like come on this is for…enjoyment. Or I suppose u could use that new term “edutainment” 😂 but get over yourself this is a rude video. I myself work in 3D modeling and art directing mainly and I thought this game was nice to understand the purpose of nodes. In my opinion all nodes are essentially the same so to understand the nodes system as a whole is a great foundation for many.
