  • Since I was on the topic of China about a month ago, here's the story of what happened to the Nationalist Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek's 3rd wife. It's not too well-known, especially in the Western world, so I thought I'd talk about it.

He didn't "establish it as a separate country", he just moved the capital from Nanjing to Taibei. The government in Taiwan is still officially the Republic of China.

Not going to claim to know much about STDs but aren’t many STDs like syphilis hard to diagnose and detect today much less back in warlord China? Unknowingly giving someone a disease is much different than infecting them intentionally and if you are going to mention it, that is something that needs to be explored.

Think you for posting this very interesting background on him. People often forget that we like and remember our musicians, actors and actresses, politicians, sports starts, etc. not because they are good people, but because they are good musicians, actors and actresses, etc. Often (but not always) famous people are nasty people personally.

In China, some female history geeks view him as a "pretty guy" in his younger years. Some even say he was cute in his 60s-70s. On the contrary, Jenny's face is viewed as being more masculine. Mind you, there even were evidences that he was attracted to 'strong' women because they would remind him of his mother.

    Chiang's last words to her:
"Should I break my promise and fail to take her back, may the Great Buddha smite me and my Nanjing government"
Nanking Genocide came in 1937, following his defeat to Mao's CCP on 1949, it really shows that Kai-shek is a total bigot and a liar. Buddha really smite his government and almost left him no crumbs. May her soul rest in peace.

You're forgetting to state that the life expectancy was under 30 for the vast majority of people then.
So that 13 yo "child" (you put such emphasis on her age) was practically middle aged! And at 15 already almost a spinster.
You can't compare ages from then to now. It's like apples/oranges~they aren't the same at all!
Please, if you're going to speak historically, don't put so much emphasis on then/now. You simply cannot compare them. Not even a little. Most women had children, sometimes several before they were 20. They usually died of "childbed fever". Life was incredibly difficult then. Even for the rich.
The lifespan in China is still years below N. America. Poverty, lack of healthcare, the still prolific pseudoscientific "chinese medicine" that accounts for almost ALL of the illegal trade in animal parts worldwide, kills millions every year, because it still relies on folk medicine and false cures. The vastness of the land and differences in ethnicities also play into this.
I don't mean to criticize, really, but presenting history shouldn't be a then vs now deal. It should be presented as factual and most importantly, with no huge emphasis on the differences in behaviour, ages, habits, etc. It leads us to believe they're comparable. They simply aren't.
    Thanks.

This is true. A lot of this video was based on not understanding Chinese "culture". I lived there for 12 years and was married for 7 years there so this is normal, even today. Nothing shocking here.

I think you misunderstand the life expectancy being 30, that doesn't mean that 30 is old, it just means that a lot of people died young, it doesn't in any way mean that 30 year olds were viewed as senior citizens and 13 year olds were middle aged. You wouldn't have expected to live to 30 back then, you probably would expect to live much longer, but there would have been a high chanced that you would die in childhood, which brings the life expectancy down a lot.

      Hello 👋
My comment was written "tongue in cheek". But that can't be "seen" in my comment, obviously. It's so hard to try to write such things~because w/out inflections in voice or facial expressions it's hard not to take everything literally. But thank you for the clarification.
I wasn't trying to infer that everyone died at 30 or younger. But it certainly was the average life expectancy back then.
So yes indeed, many lived long lives, but in all fairness, the life expectancy for women was very low because of childbirth. Pregnancy was dangerous then (as much as it is now in some parts of the world.) I was trying to emphasize that the creator was putting far too much emphasis on the fact that she was "young" compared to now, and you just can't make that comparison. There was no such thing as a teenager then. Children were simply small adults and were treated thus.
Hope you're well and safe 😷
