The Lotus bike is one of the most beautiful ever made in my opinion. The modern version looks like it has the bike equivalent of an aftermarket car body kit strapped to it and looks awful. Apart from that the sloping top tubes and clean lines of the modern bikes get my vote.
That Colnago C40 is what a race bike should look like; classic geometry!! Not a fan of most of the sloping top tube & dropped seat stays of a lot of the current bikes. Had a CAAD 12, but don't like the look of the new 13 version.
Back in the day the PDM Concorde was a real beauty as was Banesto's steel Pinarello amongst others of that era. Campag wireless yes this could be my move into 21st century cycling from my current Safety bicycle.
Wilier beats the 1940s for me, but otherwise I love the older bikes. So Wilier, Lotus, Faema, Cinelli Laser, C40. There is just something about the traditional shape with a straight top top that just looks more elegant to me.
I think the bikes in the middle (not shown) look best -- still closer to classic tubes and geometries, but with more sleek components, and more silver. I'd like to see modern wireless, in silver, on a lugged frame like a Sachs, or a welded frame like a Pegoretti.
I totally agree with Deadhead.... Especially the C40. Reminiscent of my 1990 Lemond TVT team edition frameset which I regrettably sold some 19 years later ..... 😕
I must admit to liking a lot of the older bikes usually 80's or 90's bikes . The older ones in this vid go a little too far back! Get me a 7 eleven or Motorola Merkx ! I think I like a lot of the modern bikes better here with the exception of the Lotus, that still looks good! (The Cervelo is horrible!) Great vid again Dave!
The three colour scheme that LeMond and his Z team was on in the early 90s has always been my favourite! Let’s hope his new company releases some bikes celebrating his heritage
I can agree that if one looks from a „hipsterish“ angle, older bikes are quite beautiful. I could keep one in pristine condition on the living room wall as a decoration cause they look better when not ridden. Out in the real world (when actually ridden and dirty) most new bikes look way better.🤔🤔🤔
I like the modern bikes more, can't help it. even when looking at a bike from 2000 (well, that is already 20 years old by now O_o' ), the advancements that have been made are unbelievable.
Only old bike I like out of the comparisons is the Colnago vs Aethos. Aethos was almost perfection but I couldn't get over how sloped that top tube is. It bothered me a lot.
I personally think that the late 80s and 90s produced some of the more beautiful bikes, it is always hard to comment on new bike designs as they are new and not seen yet, hence they look cool due to technology advancements or innovations. That being said, I believe that the last 4 years or so of bikes have had a good design trend, although still cant beat the traditional frames with the new age carbon designs of the 90s. But I think we can all agree that the designs of the 00s, and also their paint schemes, were pretty trash.
In all examples I thought the newer bike looked better but I also think that had you featured bikes from the late 80's early 90's it might not have been so lopsided. I'm thinking of the colnago master and arabesque. My early 90's paramount is a beutiful bike that gives my emonda a run for it's money in the looks department.
So many examples I could have included. I didn't try and bias it in any one direction, just tried to come up with comparisons that to me felt right and fair. The Master is a top choice
Campagnolo really need to bring 12 speed eps (wired or not) to lower level groupsets. I can safely say that not that many people are paying for the super record level groupset.
It's not about era's. Any steel bike with rim brakes and aluminum wheels will be the most beautiful and timeless bike. Carbon bikes go out of style very quickly because many times all that tube shaping is just for fashion.
The only old bike that looks better is the Lotus. Other old bikes do not look that good IMHO. (Sorry hipst.., I mean bikesters).😁 P.S. That Cervelo is epically ugly. It looks like something it belongs to agricultural machinery.🤮
I honestly never found old bikes good looking at all. They look very fragile, weak, uncomfortable, unpractical, heavy, etc and that all is very obvious in how they look. New bikes on the other hand look a lot stronger, everything is much sleeker and way more fought out than in previous years and aerodynamics certainly help with that. Newer bikes often have way more natural flowing lines as if you can actually see how the airflow should flow around the bike. That is very appealing to most people I believe.
Campagnolo PLEASE make a wireless groupset! I am totally ready to buy it now!
Same here!!! Or at least Semi Wireless. Or even update the functionality of the shifters.. Oh my goodness.... C'mon Campy! C'mon!!!
2021 Wilier, Lotus, Dogma F12, Scott Foil, Colnago C40.
Agree 100%!!!!
The retro Colnago C40 has a heart and soul of a race bike that the modern bikes simply DONT have
I’ve never ridden a C40 but hoping to realise this dream in 2022

The DT Swiss "tire pressure gage" for illustration is a spoke tension tool

any bike with rim brakes look better than disc to me
C40 - just beautiful...
I totally agree with Deadhead.... Especially the C40. Reminiscent of my 1990 Lemond TVT team edition frameset which I regrettably sold some 19 years later ..... 😕
Filante for me..
I seen both the Lotus and P5x in the flesh, Lotus has it for me..
Old school TDF
Old Bianchi
Colnago c40 always so nice
I must admit to liking a lot of the older bikes usually 80's or 90's bikes .

Great vid again Dave!
The Merckx Ten Year Anniversary bikes are also beautiful.
Chrome and polished aluminium is more bling than carbon.
Late 90s early 2000 are the peak of round tube frame. But today's bike look the bomb
Old bikes look way better imo. Nothing beats a 70s/80s hand built steel frame with a high-end group set.
The three colour scheme that LeMond and his Z team was on in the early 90s has always been my favourite! Let’s hope his new company releases some bikes celebrating his heritage
new bike shape looks better because of aero gains.. but i still drool to have a tsx or Max tubed steel bike
Old bikes ALWAYS looks better.

1> 1940's , Lotus , merx TDF bike, C40 ( I love the tech of inflating tires. In Moto GP you can adjust suspention on the fly. so it makes sense )
I prefer all the modern bikes except for the Lotus, that was one fabulous bike and still looks state of the art today!
With exception of the Lotus, all of the modern bikes look much much better than the bicycles of yesterday.
I like the modern bikes more, can't help it. even when looking at a bike from 2000 (well, that is already 20 years old by now O_o' ), the advancements that have been made are unbelievable.
New bike for speed and distance and old beauty for cruising around the lake.
new bikes look 500% better, no doubts
Only old bike I like out of the comparisons is the Colnago vs Aethos.
Aethos was almost perfection but I couldn't get over how sloped that top tube is. It bothered me a lot.
Aethos for me. It's a stunning combination of old and new.
I have an exciting piece of tech: micro pump with gauge and thanks to it I can change my tire pressure wherever I go!😏😏😏
C40 all the way

Filante, Lotus, Dogma, Foil and Colnago
Willier 1940
Cervelo p5
Eddy merc
Scott foil
Colnago c40
@David Arthur the old bikes look better because they don't have those ugly rubbing discs...
😂

i just like the black deep wheels, so all new bikes look better except aethos which is not sporty looking at all
The only oldy I'd take is the Cinelli...
2021 not even close
2021 willier

New bikes except lotus and cinelli
c40
C40
Foil
Most of the modern bikes look better than the older ones except for the Cervelo which is a really hideous looking thing
Pinarello frames and forks look as if they are melting, awful looking design.
It isn't modern if it isn't rim brakes lol
New bikes for me. Neither triathlon bikes.
C40 > Aethos

Dogma
New bikes far better looking.

Nothing stronger than modern quality steel, at all 360 degree angles of attack. At 109 kg I must say goodbye forever to hollow carbon tube bikes.
It's a bit Binary. They are different, that's all
