I’d say it’s more like Europeans and South Americans mostly having a hard time accepting soccer (association football) just isn’t that popular yet in the states and Canada. Messi’s huge world wide but America has our own sports we love passionately. Soccer is definitely getting more and more popular and is now the third most popular sport in America.

You’re assuming that people know their sports and because more people watch American sports in the US, Brady will be more recognisable than Messi
Tom Brady Instagram followers - 14.2 million.
Lebron James Instagram followers - 156 million.
Leonel Messi Instagram followers - 470 million.
Messi is 33x more likely to be recognized than Tom Brady…because there are no borders with social media. What people see in Europe on Instagram is exactly what people see in the US or anywhere else in the world…and there are 168 million active Instagram users in the US.
A lot of them will be teenage girls who won’t know what Messi does and probably don’t care. They’ll just go, “Oh, look. There’s that guy from Instagram!”
Brady’s fame will be limited to sports fans. Messi’s fame is unlimited.

Think US citizens need to realise that soccer is NOT a sport, in many countries it's a religion, so the greatest players are literally seen as living Gods.

People dont understand. Messi is a savant. His mind is the mind of a prodigy. Hes like mozart or einstein, he just came to born in a football nation as argentina and became a footballer, thus he creates magic, art, inspires every pitch hes into, no american player comes even close to that.

They really don't know what they are talking about.
It may sound cringe to some but he is almost worshipped like a deity in so many parts of the world.
The world superstar or celebrity doesn't even come close to describe how the world perceives him.

Wanna revisit this question? Messi isn't just "some soccer player" - he's the greatest player of his generation and widely regarded as the best player to play the game. If no one knew who he was they sure a shit did after Qatar. The World Cup dominates asolutely everything, television numbers mean sweet f*ck all, Messi's face and name is everywhere, he's probably dominated US Networks too over the past 6 weeks.

I think you can have a debate in the US just because of the state of Football and the MLS , however , like in Miami with large Hispanic majority , ain't no way Messi will not be noticeable, besides , the more he plays , the more he will drag new fans to the sport and he will.change the outlook of Football in the US he is that great , but outisde of the US , this comparison is laughable

Just look at the ticket prizes. If Tom Brady were to come out of retirement, ticket prices would barely increase to negligible. A Chicago Fire game that was $10 is now $180!!! In this era of social media too, there are so many opportunities to get a glimpse of Messi.

It's Messi for sure! I'm a chicago fire season ticket holder and I made $1200 just off the Inter game, pretty much going to Fire games for free this year! Brady is a goat but this argument should if been who's bigger Messi or CR7
