- In this video I install and review a 9" LCD IPS Screen in a Model 3 Tesla.
Please confirm with the manufacturer the installation required for your specific vehicle as the process can change slightly with each model year.

hello my car is a 2021 tesla model 3. would a 26 pin or 20 pin monitor fit me? which monitor should i buy? Thank you!
Great explanation! Been criticizing the absence of a instrument cluster in 3/Y ever since. I can't believe it is really necessary to install this yourself because the manufacturer just won't put instruments and CarPlay/Android Auto in the vehicle.
Nice to have the option now
The lack of a dashboard was one of my biggest complaints with the non-S/X Teslas and this addresses it very well. I had written them off but this makes them slightly more appealing. Only slightly since I am pretty sure the dashboard will stop working after a software update at some point, but still.
That’s a game changer , looks fantastic! Loved how careful you were with the install 👍
"It's Linux based so it's gonna be more stable than something maybe like Android". What? Linux is a kernel and Android is "based" on a modified version of the Linux kernel.
Android (Linux based) comes with more features and stuff to the point it is less secure, whereas this device runs directly on Linux making it more stable. No updating required. Just wire up and use.
Here is a good article outlining how Android and ‘raw’ Linux are different even though they share a kernel. www.lemmymorgan.com/why-is-linux-more-stable-than-android/
@@Donslife I don't know at what point people will realize that their lives aren't that special or important unless you're a high profile person. Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc. all be my guest listening to my microphone while I drive and sing with my "beautiful" voice or curse at the idiots I encounter on the road every day. Do they tap into my GPS and know where I go grocery shopping? Or where I work!!?? OMG it's public on my facebook too for THE ENTIRE WORLD TO KNOW.
no no no no. kernels are natural things. I won't have you using nature words to refer to computer crap. And none of this "ecosystem" crap either
Yep free google maps with your mobile who needs a subscription
I think they should have come like that from factory...looking at Volvo, i see they also cheapest out on the EX30 and only installed a center screen, hopefully someone will create a dash screen for that one too, although i get how one more screen would add a lot of cost overall making them up the price on new cars in order to get good profit.
Tesla model 3 and Y should have come with this as standard.
I was real close to order myself a model 3 last summer but after I had test drive in it I found it annoying not to have something in front of me showing the speed and some simple info.
Great video 👍
Thanks for sharing
It’s the reason I am waiting for the EV6. I have been using a heads up display for the last 10 years. Nice video and interesting product.
Rent one for 3 days you won't miss it
A test drive is probably not long enough because you get used to no screen in front of you real fast, like within a week of owning. I like this product though.
@@DarrellC. Agree. I actually like having nothing in front as you get a clearer view of the road. I also don't mind having the speedo off to the side. What I really do mind is not having Waze. Spotify and Tune In Radio are also better implemented in Android Auto than Tesla manages. Seriously tempted by one of these for that reason.
This is just fantastic. I have been looking for a video on how to install something like this, finally, this problem can be solved. Thank you!!
At least yours came with instructions. Mine didn't and hopefully your video will help me somewhat.
Email me (info in the video description) and I can send you a screenshot of mine.
Wow, thats a must have for model 3 and y owners
that helps the tesla a lot
this is by far the best looking device they made. do the other devices get a similar GUI patch? or is this for some reason unique to that manufacturer?
I can’t say for sure as this is the only one I have reviewed
Great job and not as boring inside
This is great. I’m definitely going to add this when I get a model y.
Some people seem to like the option!
Don't own a Tesla, nor plan to own one but I LOVE aftermarket stuff like this that's actually add value to the car in a OEM look. Awesome stuff 🔥
Really nicely explained and demonstrated
This is great as tesla have need a second screen for speed and basic info .
This centre screen does not work for many drivers
You’re telling me that you can’t take less then a second to move your eyes 45 degrees to the right?
Some of you people bitch about the most fucking insignificant shit.
Now i will consider buying a tesla y or 3 when you can install this👍 very cool
@@88joshuajohnathan I bet you have Elon Musk themed underpants
Thanks for the video. Was hoping to see more feedback on actually using CP/AA, how it integrates, load times, lag etc...
That is cool and very well described, appreciate it
Thanks. They sold out pretty quickly but I hear they are getting replenished soon
Hi. I'm about to do mine. You should do the yoke too. Looks amazing with yoke and the carplay.
Wow! That's for me!
Hello , what part of Canada you are from.? I like you to put one for me if you can.
I am in Saskatchewan
You can tell Tesla are not car designers. What company in their right mind would not install an instrument cluster right from the onset. Now they supply an after market part. Great video showing the stages for the install. I hope you do well with it.
Mini has a center mounted analogue speedometer actually, which is hard to read in your field of view compared to a big digital speedometer. There is absolutely no need for a display behind the steering wheel since the center mounted one works just aswell. The only people complaining about it are ones that never drove a tesla to begin with or drove 30 years with the same interior style and have a hard time to adjust to something new. Absolutely no difference between looking down at a analogue cluster or slightly to the right at a big digital speedometer, which can easiely be read in your field of view anyway.
It’s about $$$ so bare bones in Teslas
Do you regard Toyota as a car company? Their Prius doesn't have instruments right in front of you
I have been following Tesla since the beginning. Elon's choice to omit the basic driving instruments in front of the driver would be a deal breaker in any decision to buy this vehicle. I am so pleased that there is now a great solution. This innovation is wonderful!
Nice video. I have just subscribed to your channel.
I am happy you liked the video
Which u pay extra after the overpaid vehicle GJ
@@romandoru8134 It’s a choice. You don’t “need” it. It’s just a nice addition.
It’s a pos. Glad Elon removed it
a lot of modern vehicles dont have an instrument cluster in front of the driver. there are a lot that have in centered on the dash. Same as the Tesla. its no difference.
We have one of these but when we updated the car this stopped working. How do we fix this? It happened with 2 teslas.
Same here. Don't know what to do. Can't find any info online.
Same here, it briefly powers on and shows the car logo, then posers off. It looks like the software interface with the car changed. Any idea on how to fix this, like update this thing or something?
I’m still waiting for model 3’s to come down in pricing but if I were to get one, I think doing this install would be a must for me. I’ve always preferred the 2 screen setup of the model 2. Call me old fashion but I get a better read off on things if.I have gauges. I know being electric all anyone would really bother with is the digital readout, but not having a gauge is really bothersome. Can’t gauge speed accurately with just a digital readout.
I think these type of accessory will be flying off the shelves! 👍🏻
I am impressed by people in any of the provinces that do not get any rebates from their provincial government buying an EV.
I would have liked to hear if that affected the ability for the fans to blow on the driver, and how much. Also, using apple car play, does the audio still play through the tesla audio system? Id hope its not through the small speaker on that unit.
Apple CarPlay can play through the Tesla’s speaker system via Bluetooth or the tiny built in speaker. Sorry about the fan. Since the weather was on the cooler side but not freezing, there was no thought to test it during the video recording.
@@Donslife thanks for that information and taking the time to reply!
Of course!
The only problem is, it blocks ur AC/Heat vent in from of ur face...nonetheless is a great product...
Do you have it? I didn’t think it blocked the airflow that much. Seemed to wrap around pretty well
@@Donslife no don't have it but planning to have it install in my M3 2022 also w/ my forth coming MY est. delivery June this yr....I like it actually...
That gray harness?,
No joke….really tight spot.
Epic upgrade to make your tesla a normally functioning auto - LOL 😆
@Donslife Quick question: can you change the speed units to metric (MPH) or does it stays imperial (KM/H)?
It should be switchable. I installed it on my neighbour’s car so I can quickly check how to switch it over. His was in KM/H when we installed it
Update : still love this screen best install I've done on my m3. Took my car to tesla service center and all the service reps were enthralled with it asking me all these questions. Get this thing it's great!
Just carplay alone makes this worth it. Is CarPlay communicated through bluetooth?
Yes the Tesla Bluetooth connection is one way to use it. Probably the best way. Otherwise there is a built-in speaker
Does the steering wheel block any parts of the screen from the driver's position?
@@Donslife seriously? I wanted to add this so I could get audio to the speakers without having to use crappy Bluetooth. Why does no video about this go into detail about this. Almost bought it but I can just Bluetooth from my phone. What a joke.
I had a 3 for a month as a loan car. I hated it. This would have changed things a lot. Do they do it with a HUS built in too? That would be perfect.
This is stupid. You buy a 60k car . And you got to put in a 250 bucks 💨 dash...
Just go buy a BMW or something lol.
It is annoying
As good as it appears I’m not sure how practical this is operating the functions like apple play on the move through your steering wheel ?
What's a bit more compromise after having so much with the centre screen ?
Best thing about this screen is that it shows you both percentage and kilometer or mile for remain battery charge.
I'm wonder why tesla do not let customer use both of them simultaneously in that huge screen ?!!!
wouldnt it be crazy to have the same screen as passenger screen?
With this you don't feel the air in your face, they have to build it to go above air vents
It doesn’t really block the vent, if the air is set to come out right where the screen is sitting it just flows over the top.
@@Donslife true . U just adjust the air to flow all the way up and it’ll hit your face
I like this but there are a number of HUD solutions out there which I think make more sense on the Model 3. Surprised it isn’t a factory option - it fits with the Tesla minamalistic aesthetic.
“I don’t like or need this so therefore no one must like or need this.” Half the comments.
screen looks good but pretty useless without a control knob.. no way your going to constantly reach in between your sterering wheel..
Yes, I wouldn’t recommend doing that but the steering wheel knobs can act as controllers too
Its a big no, those screens should be matt finish...
Nice! This is one of the reasons I didn’t get a Tesla. Didn’t like no screen in front of me.
Does the apple carplay work with the car speakers? Or does it come out the speaker from the screen?
Either / or, you can choose the Bluetooth option or built-in speaker
I have tried and tried . I cannot plug this in . So now it is just sat looking at me . Anything I can do to allow me to get to the plug . . .?
It isn’t easy. Try and get a helper with small hands
I live in the Los Angeles area. Can you recommend anyone to help with installation?
I would call around to reputable car customization shops. Sorry I have visited LA a handful of times, but I don’t have any contacts there
-24c..... Yikes! Too cold for me. The way it is positioned behind the wheel, do you find it easy to use the touchscreen while driving. I know you said that this is your neighbor's car.
He said it is pretty easy once you get used to it. Same goes for the steering wheel controls
Would this invalidate or affect the factory warranty? Could it be potentially a bone of contention with Tesla service if you have this and you have a weird software issue? How about when OTA updates come and there may be a compatibility issue with the latest software update?
This is the one thing that is preventing me from even considering buying a Tesla Model 3 and that is the horrible decision by Tesla to not have a driver console screen!! Shame on Tesla! I'm sure they have lost a lot of potential buyers over that idiotic decision!!
The product I bought was different, but the instalation was exactly the same. I had a problem after finished the instalation. The new screen worked perfectly, but all the cameras on my Tesla stopped working. I removed the cables of the new screen, still no cameras working. I installed it again. Nothing. Drove a little bit, no cameras. I deleted all the cameras adjustments. Nothing working.... Well, I'll need to remove the screen and schedule a service at Tesla. I just left the car alone for a while, almost one hour, and then tried, just for curiosity, to access the Sentry mode using my phone. Yay! All cameras are working again!
this looks much better than the one Evan Michiels installs NEW Tesla Instrument Display | Tesla Model Y⚡️Model 3 | An OEM Look❗️Install and Review
how are you? Will you have the monitor for the new tesla 3 2023? compliments
I would keep checking their website for compatibility with new models
Very useful! Thanks
You're welcome!
i knew people would sell these. I just thought it would happen sooner
You totally skipped how you got the two wires you pushed through to end up in the piggy back harness. How did those 2 wires suddenly become a harness?
Not really, the two wires that connect to the screen have quick connects to the harness that you plug in underneath the glove box. Also the screen comes with a step by step installation sheet.
I think that install covers until 2021, 2022 doesn't have the gray connector behind the glove box.
Yes the install may vary on the model year.
@@Donslife Thanks
Is there any issue with the bluetooth between the phone and the CarPlay unit dropping out? I have seen this issue on other videos but it was from the earlier 10 inch android unit.
arrived in 4 days to san diego via dhl
Great video. One thing. Never put your hand on my face
Your video should be the template for all the tutorial videos on RUclips! Awesome, thanks!
Any worries with future tesla software release compatibility? Looks great! Would love to see extra stats too that isn't on the tesla gui.
Updates can be performed via the USB-C connection on the side.
This should have come with a Vehicle in the first place , Tesla might give you a hard time over warranty issues as you are Tampering with the car electrics 🧐
My thoughts exactly
With this you won’t need the connectivity subscription since your phone currently does all that .
Why is the temp reporting as -24 deg C for a lot of the video? Is that an error?
Welcome to the prairies of Canada in late December/early January. 🥶
@@Donslife Ah right I somehow managed to watch the whole video and not spot you driving in snow for a good bit of it 😝
does youtube works on it ?
Got one, and recently it broke with a software update. It now briefly powers on and shows the car logo, then powers off. It looks like the software interface with the car changed. Any idea on how to fix this, like update this thing or something?
I would like one that shows your side cameras
That’d be cool
That gray clip, FYI, is on the right hand side. It’s a b***h to get off and put the adapter back on. Was not easy at all and took an hour myself.
The main reason for me not buying a Model Y is the lack of a driver's screen - you might just have got a sale for a Tesla with this device. Tesla should fit this as standard, but we all know that it is not fitted is just to save a few dollars.
Question. When you were flipping through the screen; Changing the car showing lights on section then doors being opened, tire guage pesssire etc... Can you toggle from steering wheel? Or do you have to use the screen? I don't want to be reaching for the screen while driving. Thank you.
Yes you can
love the analog speedo. Analog speedos better give you a sense of the acceleration
Does anyone make anything similar to this but with a HUD windshield image instead of a screen that blocks the drivers air vent? It’s hot in south Florida.
Unfortunately not that I am aware of. Most aftermarket HUD’s for any car look pretty bad. Since the good OEM ones have a film in the windshield to focus the projection on which makes it look much better
May I know did it blocking the air flow come out?
Coz it seems covered a few area on the front broad
The air flows over and around it pretty well
Hi @donslife. When you say “turn the car off,” did you mean you disconnected the battery? Also, anyone hooked up the harness for Tesla Model 3/Y Performance? Looks like a battery hookup as well.
Turn off the car (which can be done) maybe not necessary but just a good habit when unplugging systems. The reason to disconnect the batteries would be if you took to long to plug in the new harness. Disconnecting the batteries for a bit will reset everything but you’ll have to start again with the OEM harness plugged in
My screen just stopped working and went black. Anyone have any suggestions please?
Same here after a recent update my screen went black after several soft resets I was able to get the screen back on but no car play smh 😢
@@chinolatinoxradio5935how to do do a soft reset?

It's so ugly , so not integrated with the car . There are some other LCD that integrated with the panel , but they don't support android Auto yet
Hi, this looks amazing.
I was just wondering how is the view from the driver's position. Sorry if I missed this part, but I didn't see this angle in the video.
Does the steering wheel block any parts of the screen?
Thanks
It’s similar to most cars. Only when turning the screen can get partially blocked
Installing this HUD device in a model 3 will Tesla warranty goes not valid anymore?Does anyone advise for sure.
I like linux stuff they make cool stuff i dont see a problem with android its useful to me but that screen speedometer could be real useful good review.
Thanks for checking out the video
will this void the factory warrenty?
It shouldn’t in Canada or the US anyway. There are laws to protect the consumer. The manufacturer has to prove the add on cause a problem affecting a typically warrantied item. If you install it wrong and damage something, that would be a problem though
Will your audio still go to the vehicle’s stereo system when operating CarPlay through this device? Hearing mixed feedback.
Yes you have to pair it with the car’s Bluetooth
If Tesla had this they would charge 10k just for a tablet
I wish you were in SoCal so I could pay you for this install
and suddenly one of the Biggest issues with the Y 3 is gone!
Sorry Elon looking over at the main screen for your "no part is the Best part..." does not cut it for many people. You might "get used to it..." but it will still be niggling at you every time you drive.
I have test driven a Tesla twice. I found no problem using the touchscreen. I'm 69 years old. I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill. I think if people are going to try to operate this touch screen through the steering wheel while driving, that would be more dangerous than glancing to the side to see the speedometer. Also, because of the voice commands available, a driver should have very little need to touch the touchscreen while driving. I think it's dangerous in general for people to be attempting to manipulate their music sources while driving. However, for those who feel they need it, this looks like a nice one. Thanks for the video.
Can you switch KPH TO MPH?
Yes it copies whatever the Tesla is already set at
how is the navigation and music working through that? thanks for the video
Your sound options are :
- pair it to the Tesla Bluetooth Audio and listen through the Tesla speaker system (my preference)
- don’t pair with bluetooth and listen through the very small built in speaker
Legit thought you got a Tesla yourself and wondered, "Don's getting ANOTHER car?" 😂
I need more parking first! 😂
For older Performance Model 3/Y owners. I can CONFIRM that the non-performance cable is what you need. Just like in this video. OneCarStereo was cool about sending me the correct cable, but they should make it more clear on their site and instructions, as the connectors ARE different. For anyone with the Ryzen CPU: you'll need to find a way to tap the 12 volt power. But this is awesome.
Very good share. Unfortunately I was only able to provide the review review. I don’t really have influence on the details of their website
Do you have the intel cpu? Was it difficult to install?
@@TalReviews if you mean which CPU is in my car, I'm honestly not sure. I'd have to look up what was used in all the 2019 build cars. The only hard part was being under the dash and installing the harness to the CPU. That's because you're basically upside down in a tight space. Once that's done it's pretty straight forward
That is a pretty amazing piece of kit, should be standard.
I installed this on my car and I love it can’t live with out it. Only issue I have is when I try to play music from it and Bluetooth it to the speakers it doesn’t sound loud despite me turning it all the up on the steering control. So I only use it for Waze mostly. But it’s life changing lol
You probably already did this, but if not, make sure the phone’s volume is turned up to 100%
@@Donslife it goes to the speakers in the unit, which simply aren't that loud
Only downside is that it blocks air flow to the driver from the dash vents but still a great add on
That’s the only negative I see so far especially living in south Florida. I didn’t buy one yet but I’m going to explore HUD options as well to keep the vents clear.
Does that nullify warranty?
Not if installed properly
I'll just put my fold 3 there with a magnet lol
would be perfect with a yoke
It is possible to add the yoke
Will the warranty be void?
In the US and Canada, laws are in place to not allow the manufacturer’s warranty to be voided from aftermarket parts. Unless, the manufacturer can prove the part contributed to the failure of the warrantied part/system.
Hello I just want to inform you that this video tutorial is outdated as of Model 3's 2021 and newer. Please put this information in your video, I followed your instructions looking for a gray plug for like an hour and finally found out from a different video that Tesla moved them to a more accessible location, which means that all that disassembly under the dash passenger side was for no reason.
Thank you, I have added a disclaimer to the video description
Nice, but 800€ is too much. 320€ - 360€ would be the price for me to buy. Greets, Carsten from germany
Does it cover your air vent?
No. Barely takes up any mounting space
I wouldn't buy a Tesla Model 3 or Y and it's only because they don't have driving instruments directly in front of the driver as 99% of cars do.
I think it's a really bad omission by Tesla not to have a drivers display like this.
Hello, so when you use google maps it shows only on the small screen or also on the original Tesla screen as well?
The Tesla screen will only show all of the Tesla designed items on the original large screen
Don, you are my hero! I purchased the Hansshow 9" screen for my m3p and your video was the only one that properly pointed out the gray connector. the Chinglish instructions were so bad I couldn't make them out, but you pulled me over the finish line.
