Chas Chandler the bass player ( tall one)his discovery of a young Jimi Hendrix in a New York club would change the face of music forever. Advised him to come to London and got his start. He also managed Slade and Jimi until his death in 64. I heard this was done in one take. Also the walking 🚶‍♂️ represents the funeral style of New Orleans.

This is a promotional video shot to match the single that was released in 1964. Their live performances were much livelier but the recorded single still exudes as powerful and dynamic a sound as when it was released. It has never become dated.

He couldn't read music, but god he could play it the same style as the original artist, and maybe even better. RIP Grandfather Leslie John Robertson (20/09/1928 - 21/01/2021). House of the Raising Sun is an Epic Song that I grew up on, hearing it on the Radio for the first time left me in Awe... This song released in 1964 and I was born in Jan 1962 and just turned 61 about a week ago and I'm here to say when I hear this song it takes me back to the early 70's when Radio was the Social Media Platform to BEHOLD. We had recording devices that would Rival any FBI or CIA Agents because it could be days between songs and that just would not DO... Back then music meant something and these days that meaning just seems lost. Hell Cats in boiling water could compose better then most of what they attempt to pass of as Music in early 2023. Back then Music had meaning, music seemed to reach into one's SOUL and RIP IT FROM YOUR BODY because it COULD. Today music is just pandering to the plebs at best. The Animals have another song that was very popular back then too "We got to get outta this Place" was a tribute to the Vietnam War Soldiers needing to come home vs fighting a War that we didn't start or that we should even be in. Needless to say, Music without meaning may as well be Cats in Boiling Water but I digress...
Here's a fun fact for those that don't know or didn't realize, when they sang this song, it was Live with no Auto-Tune or remix whatsoever. Back in the day when you heard a group, live or on Record, they sounded just about the same because they didn't use Auto-Tune and Remix was minimal at best, just used to clean up a bit of static and popping; the Vocals were 100% real.
In early 2023 all bets are off as to who or what actually just sang because Auto-Tune is heavily used and Remix is a MUST; which is sad to say because it kills any chance of hearing said group Live. It's latterly NIGHT and DAY the difference between Live and On Record due to how much said song is cleaned up...

When I was just a kid I just heard the chorus, and what little kid and for that matter what a dolt doesn't sometimes feel like, I've got to get out of this situation! But this was a hit song for a reason, it's so catchy and it's really well-constructed but the lyrics are scathing and intense and uncomfortable, but ultimately uplifting.

I didn’t discover the Animals till much later in my life. I did know the song, of course, but sung by the folk singer Joan Baez. Since it is such an old song (100+ years), there are lots of different lyrics & she sings it from the point of view of a woman who works in the brothel & it changes the whole feel of the song. I love the Animals too, the organist is out of this world, crazy good, but Joan’s version will always be my 1st love. 😊

Other Animals songs you might enjoy are We've Got To Get Out Of This Place, about life in depressed post war northern cities in Britain, which unintentionally became a sort of anthem for US servicemen in Vietnam, and Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood... which was also covered magnificently by Nina Simone, a legendary African American singer and classically trained pianist who you should definitely check out if you haven't already. She does a great rendition of I Got No, I Got Life from the late 60s musical Hair.

If you are still looking to branch out into different styles, give John Renbourne's album, A Maid In Bedlam, a try. It's early English and Celtic folk, a classic in the explosion of folk-rock stuff that changed the scene in the 1970s, with a touch of fusion. (Bedlam was the old word for crazy house). The ORIGINAL of this is written for a woman to sing about having let a sweet-talking gambling man talk her into leaving home, only to find herself in New Orleans' famous "House of the Rising Sun" brothel, working to support the man's gambling--AND DRINKING--ways. The song's a warning to parents not to let their daughters go off with no-goods. The Animals re-work it into a boy's (or young man's) tale b/c the singer's a man, of course.

Interestingly, this band came from Newcastle in the north east of England. Not that you would know that from listening to them. I see these sorts of performances as exercises in role playing. Here, Eric Burdon, the singer, is merely acting out the role of a black American singer. He plays his part well but he's a million miles ( well 3000+ miles, actually) from the real deal. BTW, The Animals got this song from Bob Dylan's first album. Bob, in turn, pinched it from his friend Dave Van Ronk. Indeed, I think we can thank Dave for taking a old bluesy version of the song and turning it into the song we know today by adding a different chord progression which in turn created a more memorable melody.
