- Starting a new sketchbook can feel really exciting and also a bit scary. In this beginner friendly video, I wanted to share a fun technique I use to trick my brain into overcoming the fear of the first blank page without worrying about messing up. I share a few of my favourite colour pencil brands and show how I paint some pattern-filled endpapers. I hope that it inspires you to give it a go too. This helped me SO much! I can’t thank you enough! I was so nervous to start in my new sketchbook that I had let it sit for months and collect dust. I had never known of end pages before and after seeing this video I felt very motivated to try it out myself. I really connected to the part when you said this was a good way to start a sketchbook with no stress. I just picked a color and started painting my flat layer and it was heavenly. I was listening to the coraline audio book at the time so I decided to draw keys as my repeating pattern. Some black, gold and white and I couldn’t be happier with my results. AND this was the first time I actually painted something. I usually gravitate towards alcohol markers and colored pencils but you inspired me to get my paint out and use them for the first time since I bought them a few years ago! Truly thank you so much! You’ve just got a new subscriber for sure!!

What a lovely idea! I usually use the last page as a swatch page, but this is even better. It really turns your sketchbook into a book. Definitely gonna do this in my next sketchbooks 👌🏻

It's sucha a great idea!!! As a bookbinder, I love to make patterns for those pages. But as the shoemaker's son always goes barefoot... in my own sketchbook I left it blank. :P

Thanks! The book’s called Van Gogh Painter. I bought it from the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam quite a few years ago, so not sure if it’s available online or anywhere else. It’s a gorgeous book.

Ahh thanks a lot. Yes I usually use old papers like printer papers, envelope, old bills and keep it in between the double page spread.

These are great, BUT, for me, the first page is now the one after the end papers, so the problem has just moved a little further in :-/
Ohh no! Maybe treat every page like the end papers and just keep making patterns! That would be fun! ☺️
