A tip I forgot to put into this video, is everyone has the ability to go into the training range and change the map. This way you can practice flying and landing on the maps you'll actually be playing. To do this you hit your tilde key (the key right above your tab key) and enter "AdminChangeLayer (whatever map/layer you want)." So if you wanted to fly on Kohat and use the British Puma you would type in "AdminChangeLayer Kohat_RAAS_v4." Hope this helps you guys out!
almost immediately after switching from the stinky heli training to an actual map I figured out low altitude flight, landing, and momentum control. the heli training is good for learning the controls but not for much else
It has been a month since this was released and since then I have gone from crashing leaving the landing pad to being able to hot drop troops on 50m fields without crashing. So for anyone wondering whether or not this guide is good, I can say that this guide and the advanced guide are both amazing with absolute certainty.
Just want to say thank you. I needed only a day with the tutorial and your video to be able to fly. I played 2games and supplied with 0 crashes. Even survived gunfire with engine almost gone and smoking
1:42 the collective actually changes the blades tilt in a helicopter, the rotor stays at a fixed constant speed the whole tires but the pitch of the blades allows it to move up and down. Think of it like a lever when up you go up when down you go down.
Duuuude SAME. I stopped playing after the update because I couldn't figure it out... I didn't conceptualize what had changed & wasn't using max collective to slow momentum in J turns. After watching this it all clicked - thanks so much!
the quality of this content you push out is honestly the best I've seen from someone who hasn't have a large fan base. from the quality of the video's I thought you had way more subs but man you deserve a lot more subs then you do now. Keep up the amazing work and ill be sure to stick around and learn some new tips and tricks from you

Pretty useful guide for new players, I'm now going to watch the second part. With only 30 hours on the game I started piloting yesterday, crashed a few times but as time progressed I managed to get supplies to the frontline as requested without problem.
You've done a wonderful job , you speak clearly and calmly which makes it easily understandable even for non-English speakers. I'm not going to say everything that has been said because the whole video is very well done A big congratulations!
A year on from watching this video, and i've basically mastered J-hooks and just moving around in the heli. I can even do barrel rolls and off axis flips without crashing 98% of the time now! Thankyou for getting me started on the journey. It certainly was hard and embarrassing to begin with!
Story time, im a top 500 Battlefield 2042 Heli pilot Hailing from the lands on Xbox (JoDiirt). I just built my PC on Sunday, and im addicted to Squad already. Naturally, after picking up on the infantry gameplay, i NEEDED to touch the choppers. Quickly found out they are nothing alike lmfao, but after your videos brother, one sleepless night, setting up a controller for flying and 4 hours in the training range, i am ruling the skies. Appreciate you buddy❤
The key for me was to understand collective (W and S). In every other game it is something that you have to keep pressing, either for going up (W) or for going down (S), while here you have to stablish it (press it, not hold it) and change it all the time. Basically, i'm watching this again but just looking at the collective bar, changing all the time. Oh, and i just read the comment below, where you say you can change the map. That's so great! Thank you!
Oh my goodness those J hook landings are insane. Just recently got back into flying in squad. I was an above average pilot before the heli flight model changes and after them… I’m barely average lol. It’s amazing to see those j hook landings which I no longer thought were possible with the new flight model and then you just make it look easy. Thanks so much for all of the guides! They are really easing me back into squad after my break.
i’ve been playing squad for 2 days, I needed this, I could already turn mid-flight and take off well and some-what land but I wanted to learn how to J-hook so I can hot drop this video is helping a lot
You just got my sub, this is what I was looking for thanks for the info and tips. Been destroying dozens of helicopters in the training area, but your clear directions were exactly what I needed.

there was a time when I had just installed squad and my team needed a heli pilot, I had never piloted one, so I just got the bird, all the troops went in and I managed to fly it and land sucessfully, imagine how happy I was
Lol all skill, I swear! But honestly it goes back to know the dimensions of your bird and being able to understand how close you can get to objects without hitting them.
Thank you for posting this! I have been getting better and using the training site with your video to help. Thanks for helping make this game easier to understand a learn!
I've watched about ten videos like this so far and yours is by far the most clear, concise, and comprehensive. Thanks so much for taking the time to put it together! I've gotten okay at controlling helis in the air and landing but my J-hooks still suffer a bit, but I think your clear explanation is going to really help me become more smooth and consistent. Can I ask what sensitivity you have your heli pitch/roll set to? I have mine at 2x but thinking maybe it should be a little higher as I need to move my mouse a lot more than you on J-hooks.
Keep your sensitivity where it feels good flying around generally, and then add pitch up to a dedicated key on your kb (I use spacebar). That way, when you start your hook you just press the pitch up button until you hook around.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I have my pitch and roll sensitivity at 1.5 with my mouse dpi at 800. The biggest thing I recommend is picking a sensitivity and sticking with it. Allow yourself to build up the muscle memory with whatever you decide on. Changing it around will force you to have to relearn the movements and will slow your progression down. Keep me updated on how your flying is going!
@@Gorlami14 Put in a couple more hours practice today (rewatching bits of this vid now and then) and yeah, it's been a dramatic improvement! Way smoother, faster, and safer landings! Still working on my accuracy -hitting a helipad from 100+ knots at low altitude is a trick - but I'll get there :P
@@marcus6639 Awesome stuff dude! I still miss the heli pad and LZs constantly. I did some hours of training with the chopper, then I thought I was ready and went into a populated server. At my first go, I was ordered to escort one and a half squad. I personally forced myself to make 10 successful landings in a row in training, 5 out on the battlefield, 5 at main, before I would allow myself to fly in a live game. Then once in a live games I would fly on layers that had 2 or more helis, so that I could let my team know I'd only be doing supply runs as to not take a full squad down with me. Best of luck to you!
The J Hook in this game feels much easier to do than in Arma 3, spent around 300 hours flying helicopters in Arma and I still struggle to get 100% consistency, but I spent 2 and I can get pretty decent landing. This guide was really helpful!
Good communication with other SL and commander is key to survive dropping troops or supply near an objective. You need to know where the enemy is and if any enemy vehicles. Plan B i use if poor intel is to go very fast over the objective first to see where i take fire, then land at a safe distance.

trained 2 hours after this video. stopped crash landing. played in a live server. supplied fobs. I only died once when I tried to jhook right hand side because I only trained for left hand. Killed myself and a squad mate lol
I have quite a few hours playing as infantry, but I’m thinking of trying to get into flying. I have a joystick that I have mapped, but I am struggling (only a a couple of hours of practice). Should I stick with KB&M (feels so unnatural) or does it just take a while to get good with the controls? Also great videos!
Feels like the game is designed with only enough tolerance for vertical slow landings. Any additional maneuverability you get while using a joystick is lost because of this fact. Landing even at a slight flare can result in a hard landing regardless of the speed. I see KBM players much more successful in squad because it limit's them to these more basic maneuvers which squad just tolerates more. Wish they would refine their flight model but seeing how there's only ever 4 pilots at any given time I don't think it's a priority unfortunately.
Do you have any advice because whenever I join a server all of the hellicoptors are all ready being used. I’m a good pilot with over 70 hours of flight experience so you have any tips to get a hellicoptor in a public game/server
Great Video Dude! I'm new to Squad (Joined in Free Weekend) and have 32hours in it, but since i love to fly in any game i am learning how to fly heli in Squad too. Pretty good Progess so far, especially since the Controlls are pretty much the same as for the Minicopter in Rust (A game i played a lot before Squad/Still playing a lot). I have a question tho. In Order to make my J-Hook Landings faster i'd like to have the Roll Sensitivity a bit higher, but the Graphs in the Settings for Helicopters just confuse me. Any advice you could give me?
Honestly go into the training range, change the map to something like kohat and mess around with trying to fly down the river staying as low as possible. That's what I've done to improve. Learn when you can increase your pitch to get closer to the ground, and when you need to raise it to avoid crashing.
As an experienced arma pilot everything is the same except for the flight model and how picky you have to be with your LZ’s since the rotors are made of glass
Im a new pilot and in a month i will describe my progress! still no progress... I just did my first j hook landing but not on a helipad on a field and now i cant do it anymore first j hoook helipad landing yeee

Do you have any advice because whenever I join a server all of the hellicoptors are all ready being used. I’m a good pilot with over 70 hours of flight experience so you have any tips to get a hellicoptor in a public game/server
Haven't watched all of the video yet but how is the flying is a similar to Arma 3 or better
0:07 They should update some of the mechanics there, cause THAT drop with heli would be fatal :D bad bad bad
There was nothing wrong with them to begin with. This change has made it much more arcade like.
If i drop the supplies where they're going? How to know where to drop them?
And if you unloaded the supplies, how do you get new ones on board?
Hey Gor!
Hey duck!
i play on keyboard what keys are best to quickly put for my pitch UP,PITCH DOWN.ROLL RIGHT ROLL LEFT? PLZ HELP LEARNING TO FLY
Any idea why when I add Yaw to mouse it's inverted? Mouse movement right heli nose goes left...
09:30 I usually prefer having my collective slightly above 45, pitching forward and literally crawling forward with a slow pace
Yeah that's a good method too! I really like doing that on down-slopes and just roll down the hill.
Any advice you could give me?
gonna get squad in a month so I can play with my cousin but I wanna fly a heli sometimes
I've found that with the changes to the Heli system, I'm having difficulties with flying low and maintaining that low altitude. Any advice?
Honestly go into the training range, change the map to something like kohat and mess around with trying to fly down the river staying as low as possible. That's what I've done to improve. Learn when you can increase your pitch to get closer to the ground, and when you need to raise it to avoid crashing.
I can fly….. but god I can’t land. I have find the J hook easier to do then just landing normally.
Can you connect a joy stick?
Can you bind a HOTAS?
I'm thinking of buying or building a PC specifically to play this game. Is it possible to play this with a controller. I was never good with mouses.
The music in the begining. Where is it from?
hey when i do the focus on the screens my screen becomes blurry and unfocused does anyone know what this is from?
came from arma 3 and i have to say flying here feels like in bf4 just with more delay
Yeah I can land coming out of a flip on arma but this game just feels like it uses the flight model or an oil tanker.
This man had more ads than the superbowl
when i enter the chopper my cockpit view is so zoomed in when i chanced field of depth nothing chance how do i fix that?
I actually tried it with the flight stick recently. Not too bad... but I don’t think you’ll gain an advantage over the mouse users
Yeah I think for the most part it's just cooler to use a flight stick and makes flying a tad more immersive than M&K.
As an experienced arma pilot everything is the same except for the flight model and how picky you have to be with your LZ’s since the rotors are made of glass
Im a new pilot and in a month i will describe my progress!
still no progress...
I just did my first j hook landing but not on a helipad on a field and now i cant do it anymore
first j hoook helipad landing yeee
