a conversation with Angelica Arbelaez, Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Steven Zucker
At first glance, her images look like some kind of exotic plant we've never seen before.
I had the same responses viewing these drawings-initially beautiful, then disturbing & uncomfortable upon closer inspection. Very powerful analysis of these works. 🙏🏼
Reminds me a lot of a work like Slaveship or D*rkytown Rebellion
gorgeous
Fresh Smarthistory? I knew today was a good day! ❤❤
What a first impression those initial images of the Whitney made (0:06) - taking me right back to the modern art playlist... I'd love to stand before those pieces and experience them more fully (just as I would "Vir Heroicus Sublimus").
And then another major impression was made seeing Savdie's work! An immediately eerie, otherworldly, and uncomfortable feeling.
Dr. Zucker's breakdown of "Thirty-Seven Counts" didn't help that! lol.
Really amazing stuff - I watched the whole thing and am still sitting here like 🥴 May have to give it another go sometime.
Harold Towne comes to mind.
i was not familiar with this painter. very interesting and insightful video.
These make me think of grotesque jarlequins, for some reason.
