It really is one thing to look at this quality of work.... then when you speak to what is being done, how and the differences among approaches it adds great value and insight as to why or according to particular traditions as well! Nice work all round there. Thank you for bringing us along.
Thanks, We always try to put a lot of thought into each project so that we can produce the right 'look' for each given style. Sometimes it can be tempting to just go with what you know but in this case it was really fun studying pictures of Japanese walls and trying to emulate that as best we can. Thanks for watching!
@@drystone-tvI'm not sure what the stone is going to be. Granite is the usual material there, but maybe a difficult stone for beginners due to how hard it is?
For this job I just eyeballed the curve as it was such a small wall but the way I would do it on a bigger job would be to hang a heavy chain at the corners to the desired swag. I might do a small video on it if I've got time
@drystone-tv that's a great idea. I am trying to work out how to do a Japanese style retaining wall around a duplex I own in Minnesota, USA. The wall will will surround 2.5 sides of my rectangular property lines. I am trying to research how it's done. My tallest corner will be 12-14 feet tall.
New subscriber here! 👍 Amazing craftsmanship. I recently purchased a property on a small island in SW British Columbia, Canada and the previous owner had built some random-sized stone dry stacked walls that I’d like to create in other areas around the land. Your videos are very inspiring and informative as I learn. Mostly I’ve learned I should just save my back and hire you to come spend some time here doing it for me! 😂
Haha ! You'd be surprised how many good wallers there are out in Canada and the US. Theres an organisation called the stone trust that may be able to find a professional in your area to help out!
Can’t wait! Your videos have inspired me to try a dry stack memorial wall at our family cabin. Thank you for passing on your passion and knowledge. Truly.
@@drystone-tv oh do you know where I can find it? & I think yous deserve your own show, I could listen to your dad talk about walking for hours, he’s a brilliant teacher and makes it sound interesting, you get like Fred dibnah vibes if you know what I mean and you and your sister have the passion, I remember watching your video when you done abit of walking while on holiday abroad, I respect that. I don’t do dry stone walking myself but I’m interested and appreciate it when I’m walking about in the countryside and I’ve been subbed to yous for a couple of years now I think, not many other people teaching dry stone walling and it’d be such a shame if the old ways were lost
Technically speaking none of the stone on this wall is properly structural , this wall is just facing a block retaining wall. In a properly dry japanese style wall I imagine the pins do have a structural role but I'm not an expert on that.
nice, I'd love to have a go with some real igneous stuff. No matter stone type the principles are always the same; length in, cross joints, wider at the bottom than the top. just have a go and see what happens!
@@drystone-tv Thanks for the vote of confidence your reply has given me. I might try and do a wall that goes no where, like I saw in a demo videos that you and your mate have done. Is there any way I can get a picture to you? Just so that you have an idea of the rock I'm looking at. Thanks again

Ended up watching a few of your videos this evening and have booked onto an intro dry stone course on Dartmoor! Great channel - all the best👍
That's awesome! What a place for a course and nice lovely granite I'm presuming? Cheers for watching

Very pleasing to the eye!
I would love to see more of the process and how the curve is figured out. Thanks.

Great wall. Looks great.
I know you haven’t posted in a while but these videos are mint. Just love seeing these finished products.
Thanks! Sorry about the lack of videos, been too busy getting jobs finished for people but spring is looking a little calmer.

Brilliant! Love to see you making these.
Amazing skill. Great work !
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful!
Hi! Love your videos, they are so informational! What type of stone did you used for this wall ?
Hey! cheers! This was a limestone from the Isle of Angelsea, North Wales. It makes a really nice looking wall for sure.
I seen and your family on tele last night, really good and really done your family justice, what was the old grouse tune they played ?
Nice! That would be the walling song written by Keith scowcroft and sung by my dad.

Would love to see the garden planted up😀
Hopefully the designer will send us some pictures or videos!
Gorgeous.😍
Seen some similar random stone walls in Portugal too 😘 (no curved batter though) great job mate
Portugal video on the cards? X

Are the small pieces structural? Or are they just faced?

Thanks! We really enjoyed this one!
Looks great, it reminds me of Tebay services restaurant.
High praise indeed! Elite service station !

Tôi thích kiến trúc này
Can I supply my stones with you to by
We like to use local suppliers and keep the shipping to a minimum. thanks though!
Very nice mate. I've got a lot of lava/basalt from an eruption 10,000 years ago I'd love to make a wall out of but I don't know where to start
