More meetings is the root of pressure. More meetings = more questions by the guy who only asks questions, so you keep preparing to provide answers rather than do actual work. Eliminate 90% of meetings and see stress levels going down. But then there are people whose only job is meetings so in order to keep their job they will ask for more meetings.

Certainly an eye opener content for younger generations who started their IT career recently. I personally realized this after decades of my IT career. I worked in major Indian IT giants and always worked 6 days per week though 5 days per week is the norm. Also average work hours were more than 12 hours. The real problem is, majority of the service based IT giants are competing each other with low bids and gets the project. Later to meet the profit targets, they are crushing resources like anything. Poor management and profit greediness are main culprits. People at higher management knows all these things and they intentionally promote this work culture just to grow high on their career. Though employee centric policies are there, it is just in paper and individual accounts can override all these policies. Due to financial commitments, many are adjusting a lot and burning out after some point of time in their life. That’s the bitter truth!

I used to work for almost 10-14 hours a day last year now I only work 2 hours a day.
What has changed? Definitely the work has been reduced but more than that the reason is because I identified all the ways to reduce the time taken remove dependencies from other people.
Now I multitask and do my work in boring meetings. I have also grown way stronger technically. Less Bugs less redos etc.
So in my opinion number one thing people should do to get WLB is identify ways to reduce time taken on the job.

Work pressure in Indian IT companies(TCS/Wipro etc) is high, mainly due to mis-calculation of project/deadline estimates going wrong and over promises to client.
Vast majority of managers in Indian IT companies don't know head and tail about project management. What they know is if some task is not getting done by 2 developers, put two more developers sitting on bench to do the task or put pressure put pressure on developers to work round the clock.
IT companies also exist in Germany,UK,France,Australia,Netherlands but people don't work like slaves.

Agree. IMO, project management/people management is a skill and can be taught but one has to have some built-in leadership skills of convincing the developers, high level leadership to get work done.Number of years of experience may produce bosses but not necessarily leaders.

Anand, I have been watching your channel for a while now and here's my 2 cents on this. I have been in the IT industry for close to 12 years now. From what I see the core reason for work pressure is corporate greed. Let me explain. Lets say there's an amount of work that can be done in N days. Typically aggressive senior management (VPs/Directors) pitch that they can do the same work in say 15-20 % lesser time with improved quality metrics. This inevitably leads to work pressure on the engineering folks and there's no way to work around it other than switching to a better workplace. More often than not if you are part of such aggressive organizations most people below the senior management (team leads) would have bought into this work culture and push it on their teams. Leaf level engineers who also buy into this idea of over working are seen as key resources. People who don't are not seen as a good fit and are slowly phased out

  • @Sameer_9715

Agreed with your thoughts but with pressure there are benefits as well like your technical skills enhances when there is good amount of work everyday and also if you achieve some good results in pressure then you can demand for hikes at right time. Pressure exists in every job wherever you get good income, but at the end of day it's all about how well you manage your pressure. The major concern arises when there is high pressure but low income and also when you don't learn anything after doing a lot of work.

It depends on projects, worked 90 hours in a week with 25k salary with 1 yrs experience, Also worked 25-30 hours in a week on different project with much experience.
What I experienced is that if any project is new or having demanding client has to face this. But this pressure comes more when client company is declining and going through several mergers. Then they have to do lot of cost cutting on IT Budget which affects is.

All problems have one common root cause few jobs more people available to do the job or problem of plenty. As of now the only solution is, if possible, migrate to other countries. Exceed expectation there is meet expectation here. Still most people are working on legacy technologies such as Mainframes, AS 400, SAP, Oracle ERP etc....ppl work for 20 years in the same technology. In most of the western world culturally people are a bit relaxed, give preference to personal life, thereby work conditions are also a bit relaxed (except a very few startups)

Work Pressure--- Can be due to many reasons like
    1)Company-product base: "makes u work a lot"
2)Team: "Some teams that are more customer focussed then u will always be working 24x7"
3)Feature or Product that you are working on may be critical so everyone might be behind u for the status
4)Bad management: May be Manager or Teammates who are Toxic--This will create a lot of pressure as they will always try to find issues to hit on u

Please don't demean the word "competitive". The meaning of competitive in service based companies is that they signed the deal for very cheap price, by underestimating the project efforts. That means that, if the project was supposed to get completed in 20 months, then the project signed by the service based company was with a promise of completing it in 10-12 months or utilising less people in the team. That's the only differentiator among services companies.
Every Tom, Dick and Harry runs a service based company, everyone is a digital transformation partner (while many of the top management of the companies do not even understand what it means, lol 😂), every body does the same work. So how do they differentiate themselves? Time and Money are the only factors. The one who quotes less time and money will stand to be the winner, mostly. And that's where all the pressure begins for the team. They have to work on weekends, long hours per week, etc. That's where the quality of work gets affected. And when the project backlog gets released, the team gets blamed for the quality and gets a sound thrashing by the customer, and they need to work extra hard to resolve the defects. The top management blames the delivery manager or account manager. The delivery or account manager blames the project manager. The project manager blames it on the team leads and the team. Overall the mental and physical health of the team members go for a toss

Look around you - see any 10 people. How many volunteer on the weekends to improve the country. There's 1/10 or even less. This is also our responsibility as citizens.
Please Google gemsofbollywood. It will open your eyes to the shocking thing happening in India. And yet no one speaks about it. Because we are all busy 14 hours every day.
Look at the health crisis in India. It is the diabetes capital of the world. Capital of the world. The highest among all countries. Once we step out into other countries we see how healthy they are. But in India the majority have 14-16 hours a day.
This is pure exploitation by the business owners. I'm not saying they are evil. They're also doing good for our country. But it should not come at the expense of the lives of people.
It is not a question of passion (that is the common reason to justify this 16 hours exploitation). Plz look at the US / Europe. 🙏They work only 8 hours. Does that mean they are less passionate? Ask them to work on the weekends. See how they will react. Lack of passion? No. They are more innovative and more passionate than we are.
We are very good at working hard and delivery more than they deliver in the same 8 hours. In spite yet we have a culture of 14-16 hours work.
I don't have time to create RUclips videos because I'm also working 14-16 hours everyday. But you are at least free of the rat race and have the power to make a difference in our country. You have the power and the industry experience to know if what I'm speaking is the truth. That is why I appeal to you. Please consider whether it is only budding employees who needs to improve attitude or also the businessmen in India. 🙏
