What you call the 'orographic' lift in the sierrra mountains is called Föhn in the Swiss alps. Currently we have exactly those conditions, in the Swiss case it is a southern wind that causes rain and snow in southern CH and dry weather tomorrow north of the alps (which we need, as our gliding club is assembling all gliders tomorrow after conclusion of winter-maintenance for the start of the gliding-season of 2024). Cheers!

How is this related to the "mountain wave" effect we typically see with the Rockies? It's seasonal, about this time of year (springtime) as I recall. You get a blast of mighty good turbulance up as high as FL300.
Perpendicular straight-in to a mountain face would give maximum effect, no loss because no side component.

Actually those windspeeds CAN break the tiedowns or pull them from the ground, especially if the tiedown anchors are in unpaved ground. So... it may help to put tire chains on your truck and park it in front of the A/C. Without the chains / cables on the vehicle it also may be pushed into the parked A/C by the wind.

I witnessed a good size fire in the TX panhandle one time - out in front of the blaze it looked like every critter from Noah's ark was high tailing out of there headed to Arkansas. Deer, antelope, rabbits, buffalo, and coyotes were running side by side. It's not uncommon there to stop what you're doing and help fight a small fire to help keep it from getting out of control.

So by the time embers where to reach ground at 30+mph they r burnt out and the fuel is still in my hand and put away to dispose of later. If you look at the graphic weather products (i.e. surface analysis), there is frequently a dry-line in West Texas. The prevailing Westerly winds typically lose their moisture over all the mountains, and so the air is substantially dry by the time it reaches Texas. Laypeople are scratching their heads about winter fires, but winter is the driest month, and snow is not liquid water, nor are the plants respiring.

We would occasionally work outside the United States in dire emergencies. Texas is dealing with wind driven fires in extremely volatile fuels. Be careful out there.

Do you use the term « Foehn » in the U.S.? Looks like what is happening there in Texas is a large scale Foehn effect. Not an expert on this, but hot and dry air in low terrain resulting from all the moisture being discharged after the air masses impacted a mountain area (the Sierras) is what Foehn is known for in the Alps. You have rain at higher elevations in front of the mountain and snow at lower elevations after the mountain because of compression/decompression resulting of the air masses impacting the mountain line. Foehn is a significant part to the plot of Clint Eastwood’s movie « the Eager Sanction » if I recall correctly.

If you're snowed in and everything quits working,
you must have enough whisky to drink
so that you don't really care.
Sitting by a warm fire with a good single malt
and a good book is entertainment enough
    for a good long while.
It's always nice to hear that your snowpack in good stead.

Two of our scoopers will be down there soon, as well as two of Bridger's. But I think they are parking all of them just across the OK boarder.

Nice report Juan, loving the Red Sox cap as I've now lived more than half my life in MA vs NYS just north of NYC. My friends don't like me much anymore ;) lol Go Sox! RIP Tim and Stacy Wakefield :/

I’m not totally sure, but it looks like the jet stream is also diverging over the Sierra Nevada, which enhances uplift. That was a factor in the 2013 Colorado floods.

I bet in the future, they won't dump excess water from Oroville into the ocean, there's probably going to be a mega project to capture ALL that run-off to sustain population growth at some point.

On a ski trip to Yosemite we took a walk to the base of Yosemite Falls. With the water falling there was a warm flow of falling wind. Two falls in one!!!
