UDES 14 5 Review/Guide, Effectively Engaging at Intermediate Ranges

- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2025
- I review the UDES 14 5, a tier 8 Swedish medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 10 Serene Coast and Overlord battles.
The UDES 14 5 offers a unique style of play; it blends a high-alpha gun with a low-profile platform. The hydraulic suspension enables the driver to increase the max gun depression from -6 to -13 at low speeds, but it's not immediate gun depression and therefore has limitations in terms of practical use.
If you don't like brawling and do like vision sniping, this is probably a tank you'll enjoy.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Superb shell velocity (1385)
Superb camo (over 34 with full Camo crew)
Excellent alpha (360)
Flat profile
Upper frontal hull armor is angled, can bounce shells of 105mm or lower
Poor accuracy (0.38 base)
Thin armor
Low HP pool (1400)
Like many tier 8 meds, limited top speed (55)
Recommended Equipment
1. Optics
2. VStab
3. Rammer
This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

.38 is height of Russian accuracy, you should be honored to have such marvelous gun handling comrade. Great guide thank you for doing these.
Love your work Taugrim, keep it up. Calm, cool and sensible.
Thanks for covering this line. I'm really enjoying this and plan to move my old Leo crew all the way up to the tier X UDES 15/16. Happy to get your perspective on these!
To the rest of you, head over to Patreon and chip in $1/month to support this guy. Taugrim's videos are hands-down the best resource for improving your game and he more than earns it.
I love how you use striking/combat terms from your training in your tank videos every now and then.
Very helpful commentary, especially when you note how could have made a better decision. Thx for that.
I like the mid-range ambush/vision control playstyle, and this seems like a tool that let me do that in the ridgeline as well. Dang, now I need new swedish crews.
Ur videos are always so helpful thank u Taugrim so much
Always fun to watch and rewatch your guides.
Theres a lot of good that you can do with these tanks suspension. They dont favor quick poks onto a rodge, but if you can inch up and stop where you know you can get the depression, you can actually get away with showing even less of your tank. Im finding the UDES 14 5 really comfortable with how much it allows me to control my exposure.
For instance, you probably could have sat even further down on the ridge in the second battle and used the full limits of the gun depression to show even less of your tank.
Ive found the suspension system to be incredibly intuitive and well done by WG (which is amazing, because I was previously worried that it wouldnt work smoothly at all) and Im incredibly excited for the STB-1 to be gaining it next patch.
Yes, you make a good point about ridgeline sniping - this tank is excellent at that.
I didn't know the STB-1 was gaining that suspension as well. I agree it was well-implemented. It's an additional tool, but it's not overpowered.
The SYB-1 is going to have -12 or -13 degrees of gun depression next patch., at least over the front of the vehicle, at the cost of only getting -6 over the sides. Im trying to get info to the WG devs that the STB could actually use its suspension to til left and right as well (by up to 9 degrees), which would allow it to have the same depression around the entire vehcile (minus the engine deck).
I'd love to see you finish the American medium line with a video on the M48A5 Patton.
I played with you once when you were playing the Leo after you finished the Leo video, and I appreciate the communication you have with random teammates. You do a lot better in that regard than most other streamers I've seen.
Once of these days I'll circle back to the M48, but right now my priorities are the new tier 9 and 10 SWE mediums, based on popular demand.
this video was great, as you did not swear once. Keep your language at this level and you are very watchable and have very useful comments about mistakes and good play.
Placeholder. I'm going to watch now, my favourite wot guide
It looks like a tier 8 Leo, gun seems derpy but hits like a truck, the reload is nearly as bad as Leo also. I'm really enjoying my Leo, already unlocked the Emil and now trying to unlock the flat mediums.
I sometimes mess up the Leo but when it works, it's incredible. I'll have a look on tanks GG between Leo and the udes as I'm now totally convinced I want one but I'm not sure if I want to keep the Leo. Funny I have all the tier 7 mediums with large guns
Also you mentioned sidescraping, beware doing that as the depression over the side is awful. Btw I'm a patron now also. Keep up the great content and I love how you point out when you make mistakes so we can learn
@@FlaviaPitariu Except the UDES actually has pen. Leo + big gun + tier 9 = RIP
@@SanguineMalcontent well tier 9s still have a weak side and ass and that 300 still hurts. Udes is obviously better as it's a higher tier, most tier 7 mediums have terrible guns, comet comes to mind
The gun handling on the 105mm gun on the UDES 14 5 is miles better than the Leo's big gun.
That said, the accuracy of the 14 5's 105cm gun is still below average.
Nice! I often find that I struggle finding safe positions to take when in bottom tier mediums, and I totally didn't even know that ridge/bush on overlord existed. I have a much better idea of what I should be looking for in a 2nd line position now.
thanks for the code . i enjoy your videos, picked up quite a few useful tips
Where is the code?

You doing good job, keep it up.
I really appreciate these videos
great job Taugrim!
really good review. Thanks
hey bud, I've been running Tuesday training sessions with lower rated players and I can not think for the life of me why I haven't recommended your videos yet. I'll be sure to remedy that. Excellent explanation of what you're doing, while you're doing it. Very well done.
Thanks, appreciate the advocacy :)
@@taugrim Already sent out a hand full of msg's with links to you and your channel bud. Good stuff.
Haha you got me on this one with the LT-432 " such ridiculous unhistorical armor. " :-D
Great vid mate
What an excellent insight to this new line of tanks, and specifically this tank. Is this a line that you would recommend, or is it a little too technical (i.e. better suited to higher skilled players) for general/average players? Thanks, as always, for your great content.
I think it's a bit hard for average players, the armor is paper and the only time it will (potentially) help you is when you're on a ridge.
The tier 8 has a really bad turret, the t9 and t10 have good turrets but even those can be overmatched or easily pend by HEAT (HEAT doesn't care about angling so it will usually go straight through). It's not about the line being too technical, it's just very situational and you need to be very careful with them.
The suspension thingy is nice but again, very situational. Line is worth a try if you wanna see something new but I think for the average player the m48 patton line or the russian line are better.
To Shin thanks so much for the detailed advice. That is exactly what I was hoping to receive.
I have been working my way up the M48 line, but am stuck at the T20. Soft armour and poor pen ammo issues.
@@richarddyson4380
T20 has 240(?) apcr pen IIRC, that's a godly pen for a tier 7 medium.
For a less experienced player the Centurions line seems like a good choice after the armor buffs.
Cent 1 is a very comfortable tank right now, high AP pen, strong turret, 10deg of depression, can sidescrape, mobility is mediocre but everything else is good.
Much more beginner friendly than the Pershing (and much cheaper, as you don't have to spam apcr).
Same goes for 7/1, the gun handling is wonky but at everything else its better or just as good as the M46 (base view range may be 10 meters shorter on the cent, not sure).
Tier 10... The fatton may be better overall but it requires skills to be used correctly, Cent is a tiny bit more comfortable in most areas (other than gun handling, once again).
P. S. Cromwell is fun to play, though Easy8 with a durp is fun too, at tier 7 T20 is far superior to the comet which is kinda garbage in 2019.
Bamzee X thanks for the other options mate! I hate spamming gold so the T20 pen is problematic, but I agree re being better compared to the comet. More grinding to follow haha!

Italian meds from tier 8 upwards are sweet. Mobility comparable to amx30, autoreloading system is borderline op, gun depression and gun handling solid to good, high base pen on the tier 10 gun, VR isnt the best but camo is good on tiers 9 n 10, so vision game is on the strong side. Of course, little to no armor and tricky autoreloading management are the downsides but that's fine.
I average between 2.5k and 3k with my more recent tier 9s, Im at 3.5k with Standard B, it's my fav tier 9 atm.
If you have time to grind these bad boys, do it, well worth the lower tiers struggle (tier 6 and 7 are mediocre).
Great Video's .... love your insight
yay been waiting for this! btw, no HD version?
It's fully rendered in 1080p now. It can take 10 mins after a video goes live for the higher-quality versions to be available.
Nice, thank you for this video. I hope you will cover new STB-1 as well. Take care
I haven't played the Japanese medium line at all. I have no plans to grind up that line - next up would be the Italian line.
@@taugrim its a pity. Okay, roger that. I though, you have it in garage.
Peeka-BOOM! I like this term.
Loved the swede meds. The suspension screwed me over a few times as it would overangle up or down further than I needed it as I was cresting a hill, but I kinda got used to it.
I *love you explain your reasoning* :)
Taugrim, you totally should try the Italian line, i really really want to see you in a Progetto 65!!!
I have to say, it’s always disheartening when a teammate dies and immediately starts pinging you on the map as if you could’ve saved them. Sometimes accompanied by chat rage. And sometimes they’re pretty good players. Normally I made a conscious analysis and decided that it would’ve been a bad gamble. But I almost always worry whether I made the right call.
Unless I'm in a platoon, I've learned not to be too aggressive. When solo queuing Random Battles, I assume that I'm not going to get supported unless I recognize their names or I see them doing things that make sense during the battle.
If good players are doing the pinging then you are probably doing something wrong.
I'm pretty decent at the game and I generally don't ping at someone unless he is completely out of position or should relocate immediately.
Sometimes one shot makes all the difference, unfortunately vast majority of the player base is not willing to take one hit to save a teammate or expose for few seconds to make that crucial shot.
That's when the pinging starts, most often.
Re good players - by that I mean accounts over 2.5k wn8 and decent WR (the more games played the higher the wn8 should be, while under 20k games accs are tough to judge, 15k games and 2k wn8 acc usually ends up a unicm at some point).
@@zajtoja I gotta say I don't think I rage ping teammates after I die ever... if they friendly fired three times in a row or something they know it.
Hi taugrim, would you consider this to be a bad(in terms of pen) turreted tank destroyer? Cuz it kinda is for its play style, thanks for the video bro really nice keep up the good work :)
No, it should be played as a medium, just as a mid-range / vision medium instead of a brawler medium. The great camo and low profile make this tank very effective at spotting and shooting over ridge tops. Non-assault TDs tend to be much more camping-oriented, even if they have a turret, as they are typically either squishier or slower.
While you don't want to force the 14 5's armor to save you, it will bounce shells.
@@taugrim thanks for the reply cheers
Awesome Video Buddy. I struggled with this tank compared to the Tier 9 and Tier 10. Is it as bad for fires as the Tier 10 as it seems to get set on fire every game lol I keep Auto Fire plus Fire Fighting Directive to help lower damage as I got sick of fire deaths.
360 squad Pog
I really like this video!
I'm trying to get 2nd mark on it right now, and I've noticed I had a battle with around 1700exp and it was a 1st class only. Yesterday I had 4,5k combined and it was 2nd class, but I'm going up with marks, so thats OK. I guess that's one of the differences between EU and NA servers.
Thank you for the code
nice review.
woohoo i like you explanations
can you make video about k-91?
I watched your RTU about light tanks and it is helpful and I have k-91 as first tier X tank but it seems I sucks at sniper MTs
can you make video about it
Would you say that with new mm (more same tier battles) that 90mm gun is also viable? It has 197 pen but somewhat better soft stats than top gun. But since it has 240 alfa reload is much better so its easier to keep people perma-tracked and in general if you miss a shot next is there in 5ish secs.
It can be tricky against tier X's but to be honest against those 217 pen wont be too much of an improvement
The 21 pen difference (217 vs 196) is quite significant IMO. I can tell differences as low as 10 pen between guns.
Also, with the 105mm gun you get 360 alpha, and if you are using the great vision control of this tank correctly, you should have many opportunities to fully aim in.
So the higher-alpha, higher-pen gun all the way. The DPM difference isn't that much either.
I was running the 90mm for a while when I first got it, but 100% of the feedback I got on the WOT forums was what Taugrim says here - alpha is king. I switched to the 105 and never looked back.
@@taugrim good points. I am asking since I played 90mm while grinding and didn't havd much issues despite drawbacks.
And strangely enough, even tho I prefer high alfa meds I grinded for e50m with that loooong 88. Had loads of fun destroying people with dpm. And even if 105 on e50m is magical I still kinda miss that meme dpm monster
Would the Udes 14 5's HE shell been enough to kill that T95 in the second replay? That's what I would usually do, if I was reluctant to close in.
The T95 armor is super thick, even on the sides. I doubt it would have done damage.
It's strange but interesting how you zoom in, fire and instantaneously zoom out before rounds hits. Is there a possible advantage of doing this?
Allows him to keep aware of what is going on around him. Allow him to see if someone is aiming at him or for him to check if there is a higher priority target he could be shooting.
Exactly this. Also helps me avoid firing on a team mate who is crossing in front of me when I have a gun with fast reload or am driving an autoloader/autoreloader.
I’ve yet to start this line, but I’ve heard so many good things about it that I’m going back to the Leo. Any suggestions on how I should be playing these tanks and get the most out of them?
Watch my videos from the tier 7 Leo to the tier 10 UDES 15/16?
That's why I make these videos :)
Are you still doing tank videos?
you could've also dropped the tree left of the building (vs JT) ^^
You are correct. Yes, I should have done some gardening there to gain the 1st Shot Advantage.
I got 1220 base xp with 6 kills, but only 1st class. I just need maybe 5 more base xp to ace it.
Accuracy is frustrating of this tank. I missed fully aimed shots from 150m distance. Sometimes, it just won't hit.
Update: I got 1277 base xp and got an Ace, finally.
Update 2: I got 1243 base xp and got an Ace.
Can you do the charioteer?
Don't own it, no interest in playing HESH mechanics, it's super cheese.
Taugrim Thanks you made my day for simply replying
What's the small box that pops up in your radicle sometimes?
At slower speeds the hydro pneumatic suspension engages. It gives you more gun depression.
Taug when did u join OTTER?
Several months ago.
Do you know iddorelartytarget (in game name) He's in your clan and im pretty sure he watches your vids.
Yes, I know who he is :)
that tank is made for ridgeline
34th yes, I did it 34th comment woot......
The smaller gun works better for me...
You have to carry quite a bit of premium ammo to make that work. Also, the DPM increase over the 10.5cm gun is not that much, like 5%.
Wait till u get the tier 10.. it's on a league of it's own
ya the 8 and 10 are amazing 9 is kinda disappointing.
I think the 8 and 9 are pretty comparable tanks at-tier. The tier 8 may be slightly stronger at-tier, but not meaningfully so.
yep, never talks about how useless this tank is when trying to grind it

here is his code
did you just beg for money?
Unicoms are one of the reasons this game is taking such a HUGE shit. You show players how to run around and gather up all the XP they can as individuals, you leave your team mates to die because you choose not to fight that side, you hide in the freaking back regardless of you class. STOP IT.
Simple as this, if you play this game you are a member of a TEAM of 15 players that want to win the game. Forget about being a UNICOM, those assholes just care about themselves and their XP and 3 marking their tank. SUPPORT your team mates and you'll find you will win more and lose less.
You mean players who are good at this game and tend to disproportionately contribute to their team winning are the reason "this game is taking such a HUGE shit"?
Seriously you think this?
LOL...
Good instructive video but absolutely terrible voice-over. You go 'up' at the end of every sentence , it is like listening to one of the girls from the mall. Apologies but you must obtain some voice training.
I listened to the video and I was doing that at times. I'll fix it in the next video. At work I typically end sentences on a down tone - it's more authoritative / affirmative.
Good for you, glad you recognised it yourself. Absolutely correct that it is more authoritative and it makes a video so much more easy to listen to and it gives you, the speaker, much more gravitas. Going up at the end of every sentence is the vocal curse of our age and those speakers that do it lose the capability to inflect and give more meaning to a sentence. Glad you took the criticism well.
