UDES 15/16 Review/Guide, In-Depth Look at Two Different Playstyles

  • I review the UDES 15/16, a tier 10 Swedish medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of Westfield and Murovanka battles.
    The Swedish mediums support 2 different playstyles: ridge fighting and camo sniping. The UDES 15/16 excels at both thanks to a rare blend of bouncy armor and superb camouflage.
    Strengths and Weaknesses
    Superb camo (over 36 with BIA and Camo)
    Excellent alpha (440)
    Upper frontal hull armor is angled, can bounce shells of 150mm or lower
    Flat profile
    High-caliber gun (120mm) may create more greater-than-3x overmatch opportunities
    Side skirts provide protection against HE/HESH/HEAT
    Poor top speed (50)
    Mediocre silver APCR penetration (254)
    Below average view range (390)
    APCR has below-average velocity (1000) but it's still functional
    Thin armor, susceptible to HE / arty
    Recommended Equipment
    1. Optics
    2. VStab
    3. Rammer
    This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

    Here's some tank nerding for you:
    Two basic types of main gun rounds - kinetic and explosive.
    Kinetic -
    APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot - say it five times fast, that's what APCR gets to be when it grows up) is the modern kinetic kill round used by (virtually all of NATO uses some variant of the Rheinmetal 120mm smooth bore - so, there's an in game tie in). Kinetic kills work through direct penetration and spalling, generally. Spalling, in simple terms, is fragmentation off the back side of an armor plate from penetration/impact. When a "silver bullet" (APFSDS) round hits, all the armor in front of the penetrator either ends up as spall/fragmentation in the crew compartment or as liquefied metal in addition to the now blazing hot metal rod the size of your forearm on its way through. Typically used only for tanks, it's a bit of a waste to shoot APFSDS at lightly armored or soft skinned vehicles.
    HEAT -
    High Explosive, Anti-Tank. The work horse round for tanks, and appropriate for use on a variety of vehicle and armor types. The HEAT projectile looks a lot like a can of coffee with a pole sticking out the front. The "coffee can" is the shaped charge (HEAT warhead) that creates a focused explosive jet. The charge requires stand off to form the jet prior to contact with the armor/target and the rod on the front is the fusing mechanism that ensures this. APFSDS will typically out penetrate HEAT at "normal" combat ranges. APFSDS also tends to be less sensitive to reactive and composite armor. HEAT projectile performance, however, is insensitive to velocity (whereas APFSDS depends on it). Proximity fused and variable-time fused HE/HEAT are available.
    HE, HESH/HEP -
    High Explosive, High Explosive Squash Head / High Explosive Plastic are usually used in an infantry support role. They are ideal for use against fortifications and obstacles, or massed infantry. They also work well against supply dumps and soft skinned vehicles. This is much more typical, the last few decades, for the former Eatern Bloc countries. This is generally not considered for anti-armor use, contrary to how it's depicted in game. Most Western nations will use one of the two to three machineguns mounted on their tank to address these types of targets. HE and HESH/HEP differ primarily in how they are fused - HEP/HESH are fused at the rear and the rounds "squashes" or deforms against the target before detonation for greater effect.

      @@K1ngKrunch - it's an interesting concept, for sure. It might be a bit too much of a stretch on the game's engine to implement the full complexity such an idea could entail. The trade offs would be interesting though. For a simplified system aimed at game balance, change the current prammo to give enhanced pen at the cost of damage. Then it's a choice - the security of a more likely pen versus the higher damage and lower reliability of "standard" ammo.

      @@davelenzi3698 HESH and HEP was used against armoured vehicles in the cold war. The FV4005 was designed to counter the Soviet IS-3 and guess what, the 183mm L4 gun it used was only capable of firing HESH rounds. The L4 was tested in live fire trials against a Centurion and a Conqueror. In 2 shots, the gun blew the turret clean off the Centurion and split the mantlet of the Conqueror in half.

      @@OlujaDoTokija - many a WoT HESH lover has been quick to point that out whenever balance changes are suggested to the "death star" - though that's a more a console problem than a PC problem. It's always fascinating to look at historical vehicle design and how certain features converged/diverged across nations. Naturally, there's a reason modern MBTs don't sport such large bore cannons ("our" own attempts with a 152mm were a sort of final straw, though the CEV did use 160 HEP for obstacle clearance) and often don't even carry HE/HEP in the rack - simply not efficient/practical as the focus of the tanks changed.

I'm on the Leo and I hate it... 9 times out of 10 trying to trade with that 300 alpha gun means you're gunna get hit while your shot tries to dig a hole to china. Agreed. I was sooooo excited during the countdown on Westfield because I knew I could go northwest to ridge fight. I tend to attract a lot of attention from enemy arties and if there were 2-3 arties, heck even 1, I would think long and hard before going up top to brawl as there is no meaningful hard cover from arty and I'd be constantly spotted due to proximity.

    I just bought my Conway and I really like it. The stock gun is actually better for my play style than the top gun. The stock engine is painful but I just got the middle engine and it is a noticeable improvement. The HESH on the Charioteer is unreliable and the stock gun on this does not have HESH so I can’t comment on that but the gold rounds on the stock gun pack 320 pen. I only carry five of them for those situations where reliable pen vs Tier 10 armor is vital. I like the Charioteer and I have kept it for tournaments where I need Tier 8 tanks. The problem is that is is incredibly fragile. If my gunner sneezes too hard it will ammo rack me and damage the engine.

    The reason that T-57's HEAT penned your extremely angled hull isn't b/c of real world HEAT physics (ie.. a super-heated jet of molten copper burning through armor). It's simply b/c the devs have hard coded the auto-bounce angle of AP/APCR at 70 degrees. HEAT on the other hand is hard coded to auto-bounce at 85 degrees. On a ridgeline the UDES 15/16's hull & turret is almost always right at or over 70°. So if they're not firing HEAT, it's gonna bounce.

    • @zajtoja

    As for double repair kits vs fire extinguisher - Im F2P player and I think its optimal balance between cost and performance to carry small repair kit + medkit + big repair kit. Cause if I was carrying fire extinguisher single small repair kit would be insufficient. Especially for Udes line which gets a lot of modules damaged. So using large repair kits all the time would be hella expensive. So I take that risk of fire so I can use small ktis most of the time, and large kits only from time to time.

    Two remarks:
    1. What you said about that arty not retreating absolutely true. Happened to me more times than it should, notice our clicker getting to far away from the team, ping the map and tell him to back up, he doesnt and them 5 mins later when he gets picked off by a pack of lights rushing a flank: "omg retard team, go play hello kitty"
    2. HESH concerning, I think its much better than heat as a premium shell. Guns that usually have considerable hesh alfa are big in calibre and people playing them are usually camping back for those 1/10 shots when you will pen something for full hp so they can be avoided. Also, smaller guns that use hesh dont have enough punch for that he to do anything meaningful. And finally, because it has low pen, 183 pushed me to the limit in looking for weakspots and aiming in. Because I want those big numbers, if I wanted splashes I would have play arty :)

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 лет назад

      Agree 100% on HESH - it's very powerful (overpowered) for high-caliber guns, because even on non-pens the damage is quite meaningful, and on a pen you can 1-shot same-tier tanks, which is nuts.

    As a tank nerd, HEAT is a bit of a misleading acronym.
    Nothing about the shell's function uses heat to penetrate the armor, it uses explosive force. So instead of melting through the armor, it's more like blowing a hole through it with a focused explosion. The copper liner inside the HEAT shell will end up very hot due to physics, but the heat produced is just a side effect of the shell going off.
    As for WoT making HEAT have 85 degrees autobounce, I assume that's just gameplay simplification of real-life behaviors. Modern HEAT rounds have a fairly long fuse away from the tip of the shell, so to "bounce" them (HEAT will fail to explode if the fuse doesn't impact the armor first - the damage to the shell from an incorrect impact will destroy the round), it has to hit the tank at a really really steep angle, like the upper plate (like below the gun barrel) of this UDES 15/16 tank if you were looking at it from about level with the gun barrel.
    And HESH in WoT is modeled awfully, but I digress. Keep on with the great videos.

      I don't have it. It's a low-alpha TD machine gun, so you have to maximize windows where you'll have multiple shots at a target. That requires positioning, field of fire, and map awareness.

      Basically the Foch 155 is the ultimate, pump-n-dump and then go screw off for 45 secs kind of tank. The burst potential is massive, but the reload is crippling. I'd rather have lower burst burst a more manageable clip reload.

    • @bfbaril
      @bfbaril 5 лет назад +1

      It just sucks a bit with the soft stock turret. Play ridgelines and focus on shooting from camo, then pulling back. Even those tiny bushes can be high enough to cover you fully. You can't ridgeline brawl well until you get the foreheadless turret, and then you become a ridgeline brawl god.
      You might also be overexposing, too. It takes a bit of practice to learn just how little over the ridge you need to peak to be maximally effective.
      Ultimately, you want to use ridges combined with bushes. The late UDES tanks have phenomenal camo and good alpha.

    Remember that this is the strongly nerfed 183 gun. Because the first one had 275mm of pen. They nerfed it to 230mm. It is fucking overpowered and the udes tanks are too in another sense.
    183 HESH is op itself. Udes tanks are OP because a combination of factors. Excellent Alpha, good gun depression and super OP cammo and armor angles, speed and so on.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 лет назад +1

      That's helpful to know about the 183. 275mm of pen on HESH was insanely imbalanced, and the current 230mm of pen is still way too high. HESH is a bad mechanic in its current design.
      I don't agree that the UDES mediums are overpowered.
      The speed of UDES tier 9-10 mediums is definitely below-average. The gun depression is not instant - it takes time for the hydraulic suspension to activate. Beyond that, the hull armor is very susceptible to HE.

      > My HE did 350 of damage only on them, shooting at the turret
      350 damage is about right with HE.
      Think about it:
      1. UDES 15/16 turret has 100mm of armor
      2. Grille HE has 75 pen, so you won't penetrate even with the highest possible pen roll
      3. Grille HE has 950 alpha, so on a non-pen you'll deal (alpha / 2) - armor. So that = (950 / 2) - 100 = 475 - 100 = 375
      If you can I'd shoot the hull not the turret, you'll pen that as it's only 50mm of armor.

    • @lpanades
      @lpanades 5 лет назад

      @@taugrim
      unfortunatly it is not possible to hit the hull that is first covered and even if it was being shown, the Grille 15 has not the accuracy to hit them... I can say more: has not the accuracy and not even the gun handling too. I say the accuracy because even fully aimed shots are not near to be consistent.
      Simply German no armored TDs have not any real accuracy, they simply do not shoot near the center anyway... and anyway is ANYWAY. Any of them from tier VIII to tier X. They are simply impossible to play with the minimum of competitivity. They have not the accuracy, they have not the penetration and they have not the gun handling and absolutly any gun depression. Simply this vehicles are on the game to be hitpoints pignatas. Their condition is absolutly scandally. The game rebalancing is a urgent question... specially for non armored vehicles, specially for german vehicles.
      The more importante feature should be fully aimed shots accuracy. The number of shots that goes to the near center on these vehicles should be much much much much higher.
      I will put you an example: tomorow, I have the bad idea of playing my WT aufs Pz. IV. Simply I cound not hit the copolla of an TS-5 with my 128mm gun @100m with 5 fully aimed shots. I was forced to put gold and try more 3 shots to take it out. What is quite fun is that the WT even being a tier upper and having absolutly no armor has about the same dpm of TS-5 and much much much much better gun handling.
      No armored vehicles, specially german ones, are super super underpowered and ineffective in this game. And that totally fake gun depression that just do not fit the vehicles geometry should be totally reverted, re-thank by Wargaming.
      They are quite unplayable these days.
      It is absolut impossible to see any in a Clan Wars or any type of competitive game.
      But, by what I'm seeing Wargaming will nerf something more on them. These Sandbox stats are really a bad joke: let's see a tier X encounter: while Grille 15 bounces 1060 hitpoints on Obj 268v4 just raising the income conquests of this Op vehicle... the Grille 15 player see that he should go to gold ammo. Ok... now it has 334mm of pen. The situation is that perhaps you could pen Obj 268v4 but it is more right that you will bounce it while Obj 268v4 will respond back with 950 of alpha.
      Those that do not see that this was a nerf of Grille 15 and a buff of Obj268v4 had some serius mental problems.
      Lets seen Grille 15 agains E 100: While you have to shoot Gold to pen E 100 for 750 it shoots you back form 1060; Meanwhile Obj 268v4 is penning E 100 turret with regular AP ammo for 950. E 100 and Grille 15 are in the same condition about using Gold against Obj 268v4.
      So these changes were a strong real nerf on no armored vehicles like Grille 15, a sligh buff in some sense for E 100 but it is too a strong nerf to it, while it is a right and consistent buff to Obj 268v4.
      Sandbox is a bad joke. I will not lost any second of my time in that piece of shit like it is today. The game was not fun in some sense for the some vehicles. But they are simply making it worse. And they say it is a rebalancing.
      While they are buffing very armored vehicles they are fakelly buffing no armored vehicles. This is not near to be an honest behavior.

The terrain resistance is better on the T-62a but I don't think it makes any difference when you compare the hp/t. T-62a has no hull armor and will never survive if he's lit up at the 8 line.

    There's something I find very strange in your replays from tanks you play quite passive in. The fact that you keep using (almost) the same positions and, like in the last replay, none of 3 arties is firing at you, even though you've been not aggressive but still a big threat to the enemies, because you blindly killed some and kept others spotted. Only in the end 1 arty splashed you. Is it just me or are you just extremely lucky on that point? I remember the same thing from a replay when you reviewed the Leo.
    Although there still are no armor models available at Tanks.gg, I have the idea that the cupola on these Swedish meds is too strong. I remember playing against this UDES 15/16, in my M48 Patton and kept bouncing on the cupola. Even with HEAT, I think I damaged him only once and all shots were from max 100m. If I compare this to the Swedish top td's, I don't have this problem going through with standard ammo on most tanks.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 лет назад

      That's incorrect, I was fired at by arties multiple times in the Murovanka battle. And ofc there were no arties in that Westfield battle, as I said during the countdown.
      Keep in mind that what I am doing is minimizing the amount of time that I am spotted, and arties can't hit what they don't know is there.
