Leo Review/Guide, Creating Bushes for 1st Shot Advantage

  • I review the Leo, a tier 7 Swedish medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 8 Redshire and tier 7 Steppes battles.
    The Leo is an oft misunderstood and misplayed tank. The 10cm gun has poor gun handling and a long aim time of 3 seconds base but it hits hard. With proper use of vision control, you can fully aim in, and one of the tricks I show in this video is creating a deep line of bushes by knocking over trees so that you can repeatedly gain the "1st Shot Advantage".
    Strengths and Weaknesses (with 10cm gun)
    Superb alpha (300)
    Superb gun depression (-10)
    Excellent top speed (60)
    Very long aim time (3 sec base)
    Low reload (11.2 sec base)
    Poor accuracy (0.42 base)
    Weak armor
    Large profile
    Slow shell velocity (785 m/s)
    Recommended Equipment
    1. Optics
    2. Rammer
    3. Vents
    You can run GLD instead of Vents, but I equip Vents for the improvements to view range and reload.
    This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

    Just unlocked the 100mm gun on the Leo and I've totally fallen in love with it. Thank you for this video, it was extremely helpful in showing me how to make this tank work. In general, I would cite this series as the most important factor in my skill improvement over the last year and 3000 battles. I've gone from a yellow player to dark blue recents and much of that was thanks to your excellent game knowledge, presentation, and educational abilities.
    To be honest, I'm a bit saddened that you seem to have stopped uploading. While you are obviously not beholden or obligated to your fans, it would be nice to see a community post or blog post updating us on when/whether you plan to return to youtube.

    Good work, the commentary is on point. Using the Leo now to research the new tier VIII medium. I use the 75mm gun, just cant bare the aim time and the awfull gun handling of the big one. All round, the tank as you said is is usable. And I have a killer crew of girls in it with 4 skills, so that helps.
    And how don't you have more subscribers? Your clips are some of the best advice in WOT I have ever heard. Anyways, keep up the good work and have fun.

  • @InfernalDalek

    YES! I'm glad somebody else uses the bigger gun. Not only is smaller gun's dpm theoretical and requires you to fire non-stop...pretty sure bigger guns wreck components more. I got a satisfying full HP ammo rack on a same tier Italian tank earlier. I doubt the smaller gun would've obliterated the ammo rack like that!

      While i love the big gun on leo high rof guns tend to damage modules more since every shot is a new module damage roll.

    In regards to the argumentation between the smaller or bigger gun. Although I'm not advocating for the smaller gun necessarily, one thing you didn't mention in your "equation" ( 16:04 ) is that the smaller gun, because of its faster aim time and better dispersion over 100m, will hit the target more times than the big gun. This is without factoring in the reload speed which also further allows you to put in more hits. Sometimes you wont have enough times to put in that second shot but sometimes you will. The differential in penetration is somewhat negligible. In conclusion I must admit that I am not sure which is the better gun since the alpha offsets the extra hits but I did want to point out the factors which you did not mention.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 лет назад +6

      Absolutely. Plus higher rate of fire = more opportunities for module and crew damage.

    • @grimreaper3882

      The thing is that you also have to take into consideration is armor nominalization into consideration. Because the small caliber in the 75mm, shoots that could normally penetrate will bounce.
      The 10cm gun is good when fighting tanks that have what for that gun is considered "medium level penetration". In those situations having a higher caliber gun is better than a 75mm one.

    i play the leo as a ambush tank you have great mobility and the tank is low profile but the armor is nothing you can rely on
    10,5 cm HE has 410 alpha and 52 mm pen so you will wreck paper tanks with it. its really satisfying to roll 410+ on a type 64 or even one shotting a tier 5 medium
    if i wanted to play the 75 mm i would've played the comet -12 depression high dpm averaged it on 1.5K dmg 500 assist on average
    i played it with the following equipment : EGLD, Optics , Rammer & Food
    had 3 crew skills (BIA, Repairs, Smoothride/snapshot 6th sense & safe stowage)

    Leo turned into one of my favorite tanks, tho' I'm one of those running the 7,5cm gun. Similarly, I was running the 9cm on the UDES 14 alt 5, but all the feedback - I mean ALL the feedback - I got on the WOT forums said alpha is king. You make the same argument here. This video has me thinking I should consider the 10,5 cm.
    I feel it has similar play to the US T-20 medium, also one of my faves. I'm not a great player by any means, but I over-perform in both of them. sub-47%WR in general, but 52/53%WR in those two. That I have good crews helps, I'm sure. It was a hard decision, but I'm transitioning my Leo crew up the tree to eventually be my UDES 15/16 tier X crew.
    Looking forward to your perspective on the Tier VIII, IX , and X Swedish meds.

    The M12 could get a shot on the Type 59 for you, so he was in a bad spot yes, but for you it should have been some help. But you are still focusing on the bad SPG when maybe you could understand he moved there because the heavy was so sad in going back; the heavy was after all going to sit with the SPG like they were offering TEA and Cakes all safe at the back.

      FWIW, the only stats that matter are your recent battles (last 1k). Account-level stats are strictly for bragging rights / e-peen.
      If you're carrying more and more, that's the surest sign of improvement. Carries can happen to anyone on accident, but with increasing frequency it means you're making the right decisions to enable the carries.

    The Leo has a rather good dispersion on turret rotation, of 0.12. Making it behave a bit better while not completely fully aimed. Compared to the Chinese t-34-1's 0.15 however, this does make up for it's bad aim time on the 10cm and combine it with good depression value it becomes more useable.
    On the 34-1 you can clearly notice this difference in dispersion on turret rotation, even though it's 100mm's base aim time is a fraction better with 2.9 sec.

    Nice games, as always and great explanations as always. Also like the changes to MM a lot, they should've done that long ago.
    Tried playing on the north american server (no premium), but tbh the folks there are too depressing, so I deleted my account. Made it to tier 7 (light) and 55% WR but as u stated ... the decision making there is just mind boggingly bad most of the time. I have had teams melt around me in less than 2 minutes.... At least on EU u can actually make plays and oftentimes you will get supported, on NA that seems to be a rare occasion and I don't like the sitting back and patient style too much tbh....
    I played the Leo with the small gun, and over bigger distances you will also hit a lot more for less damage, so it may averge same as big gun, but in close quarters you still have the DPM, are able to permatrack (which is a huge deal when fighting TDs and sometimes heavys) and can work nicely with the gun depression (less aim time, less exposure, but smaller reward in dmg). I'd say both guns are viable and have advantages and disadvantages.

    I'd argue the BB gun is better because it hits far more often.
    The big gun is nice with the alpha, don't get me wrong. But with the small gun more of your shots hit the target to compensate the lower damage, and as an added bonus, you have the dpm to brawl when necessary, and don't have to stay exposed for as long to set up and fire.
    Though on paper, my performance average is pretty much the same between the two guns.

    I know you saw my other comment so I'm gonna add another one, this time with a small suggestion and a couple of questions :D
    Can you please tell us what equipment you favor when you do unicum guides to certain tanks? (for example on the Pershing or the Patton) And also maybe what skills you prioritize, do you go camo -> retrain to take something else at 100% -> camo again, do you just keep camo and move to repairs or does it just depend on tanks?
    I usually just straight up pick repairs first and retrain at 100% for something better and then repairs again (both on mediums and heavies), do you just go for camo on mediums instead?
    PS: or you can show us the tank in the garage, we can see both the skills priority and the equipment XD
    Thanks.

DPM is nice and all but its harder to use the dpm imo.

      That is exactly right, and why I found the 10cm gun so effective. Granted, the skill cap for using the 10cm is higher due to the high aim time.

    • @LoverKittey
      @LoverKittey 5 лет назад +1

      Danial Malik sirfoch brought this up a while ago. The cons are that the bloom in sniper mode is not accurate to what it should be, particularly in 25x, in that with most guns with .35 accuracy+ the reticle can look aimed in but not really be fully aimed it(wait to hear the clink). Server reticle can in some cases eliminate this but it is a client-side mod and not vanilla. The benefits at 400+ are that it is easier to see a tanks overall silhouette, aim at weak spots and see what direction their turret is turned. You will not hit these targets with very much higher probability but the shots that fly straight on .30 or lower guns feel very crisp.
      Overall it is up to the user. I would definitely have battle sounds on for aiming/sixth sense cues and so the added zoom gives me an easier time understanding the topography and orientation of my opponent. But if you play unmodded without sound, or can easily make out targets and carefully mouse over weak spots, this option doesn't have a point, and can only be a disadvantage particularly in closer ranges.

    In the 1st battle you called the Lowe 'selfish' when he first fell back. This is what I would have done in his position, as the flank was failing, he was out numbered in a tank with so so armor. I am confused by this because you and most other streamers preach play smart and stay alive. Please explain as I do suck myself but continue to try.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 лет назад

      That Lowe was not meaningfully engaging for the first 6 mins of that battle. He hung back while his fellow heavies died. He survived the battle but only had 1.3k damage. What does that tell us? He was being too passive in a top-tier heavy.

  • @AndyChipling
    @AndyChipling 5 лет назад +2

    I think the SPG players got fed up of waiting to the Lowe to do anything.. so they felt they had too. I am when playing a french fast SPG often in a position where the other tanks are just plain chicken look after me kind of players. I post forward and have spotted for my other SPG mates and we have won the game because of this. Yes it's a risk, but with players not taking part.. SPG players are not all bad players and I don't know why you see them as that. For a start they get to see all the bad or good play that others do in the game; because of the GODs view. Yes some are not checking the map and focus on one player and get killed; when they could have moved. I have often moved up in front of my team, because the other side have come behind and I then am helping them by shooting over their heads. It's a risk yes; but it works when you need to fix a bad game. In my clan we call the TD's flat SPG players. and so many times I have gone TD on the other side because SPG are the only ones left in the game! and have killed both the other players with in your face shots. The hard part is aiming an SPG and not getting to close. The first time I did this on full health I died from getting my own splash damage and or a combination of the others shot or colishion or all 3. But if you keep your head and only fire when you know you will hit. an SPG can kill very well. So many times I have seen or been helping normal tanks win a game by killing someone who is about to shoot them in the ass. I may stun my own side from time to time, but it's worth it. a win is a win. So please let us not run down SPG players so fast. Many players do not play SPG, but should so they can see more of what to do and where to go. If you know where SPG can always get a shot on you, don't go there. Thanks for letting me have my say and good killing in the game.

Played with small gun for about 70 games and i couldn't make it work, you cant trade, you won't scare - you are a joke for others. After being frustrated so much i switched, guess what? First game with big gun, 2.8k Damage, next game 2.5k. I managed to do avarage 1.5k every game, why? Because you have that boom effect, you can out trade, you do damage and re-position or wait for six sense to go off and get another 300. With this experience i would never play leo with small gun, quickybaby is not right every time.

    • @taugrim

      Yes -3 gun depression is miserable. Although the same principle applies: 1st Shot Advantage can also mitigate awful gun depression.

    • @LoverKittey
      @LoverKittey 5 лет назад

      Sadly it does limit the positions you can occupy to utilize soft cover, not every open map has spots which even allow safety to -3 gun depression. Luckily in the a44 you get the Russian "da comrade, I press w key and run over anything lower tier" that has sort of been improved in the new matchmaker where now a third of matches are top tier and most matches are same or 1 tier down. Makes playing tanks with premium matchmaking awesome too.
