- The film follows the crux of the epic Ramayana, with a ruthless police officer on the chase to find a tribal leader and lawbreaker, who has kidnapped his wife. Veeraiya, the kidnapper and his motive for the kidnap has been led on by the death of his sister, as a result of police custodial torture and brutal rape. The film explores the search by the officer, whilst exploring the changing emotions that the three protagonists experience with each other, leading to a riveting climax, situated in the jungle. This film is based on Stockholm syndrome.
Raavanan was announced in February 2008, amidst much hype of the celebrated director, Mani Ratnam's return to Tamil films, whilst Vikram's and Aishwarya Rai's selection in the lead roles, creating more anticipation. Shooting began soon after, and took place in various locations with a record number of extras in areas including Chalakudy, Kerala and Ooty, Tamil Nadu amongst other regions throughout India. The film received mixed to positive reviews, and performed above average at the box office.

I don't know much about the true king Ravana. There is always controversy about his character in different sources but what I realize that he was an extremely formidable, courageous, brave and one hell of a stubborn man which is perfectly portrayed by Vikram. I got the true Tamil vibe from his acting. His roaring and facial expression is as wild and true as nature. He was the perfect cast for Veera. Lots of respect for him.
Yup, same goes for the great Yazeed who was really firm and courageous character.

100%, the first shot where you can see Vikram playing the parai drum, and compare that to Abishek playing dholak in the Hindi version. Just compare those 2 scenes, Vikram is 100% better!

Hence both movies were actually made together. But Abhishek later backed out from Tamil version as he realised he won't be learn Tamil quickly and deliver dialogues properly as required so Prithviraj was cast in his role.

When comparing to Vikram's rugged look, facial expressions ,body language Abhishek bachchan in nothing infront of Vikram. What a great actor Vikram is. If I see even a small clip of Ravan(Hindi version) ,I feel like it's a spoof of original tamil one. The heroism of this man vikram is unbeatable. and the chemistry between Aish & vikram is just pure lit.That kaattu sirukki moment 38:00-41:19 , I could watch it forever with the same goosebumps. Even though abhishek and aish are the real life couple,they don't have that onscreen chemistry.

Highly underrated movie. I remember this was released during long weekend. Audience couldn't digest the grey shades of the all main characters here and this became an average grosser. Now there are tons of videos explaining each frames in the movie. Nevertheless Prithvi as a villian in Tamizh movies is a treat to watch.
