Thank you. Came here looking for the location of the sending unit and you did not disappoint. I like the idea of the mechanical (well, non-electric anyway) gauge but I’d like to keep the stock one as well.
Yeah the heat sink phenomenon is really evident in the 60s. I replaced my radiator with an aluminum one about 5 years ago. After I finished tightening the last bolt, I turned around and what did I see? The fan shroud sitting on the ground. Well I wasn’t going to take it all apart. So, now I will get vapor lock if I don’t raise the hood and let fresh air in to cool it down. I had the engine die a few times at stop lights, and had to divert traffic and cause a big scene with cops showing up, jumping out of their cars, and pushing me to the curb. Anyway, now I’m going to replace the thermostat and put in a new aluminum radiator as well as a water pump. I had to laugh when you mentioned that heat sink.
I stopped using after market thermostats long ago. They sometimes stick open or closed. Definitely a critical engine component. You don't want a sticking thermostat on some deserted, lonely, country road late at night. I purchased the only FJ60 OEM thermostat I could find at a local Atlanta Toyota dealer. I am now bankrupt. $ 84.27 out the door. Got the O ring and gasket at O'Reilly for a few dollars.

Glad I could help!
