I've got the Master of Puppets tab book, and sure there are some hiccups along the way, most of which are quite obvious, but it's pretty solid. Definitely not as bad as AJFA.
Bc the timing is so weird it doesn't follow normal time sigs. So the transcriber has to do the best they can to make sense of it all.

Can't read music and still one of the best rythm guitarrists and riffmakers ever
I mean, most musicians can’t read music.
I’m not trying to be like that but not knowing how to read music isn’t really all that unique. James is one of the best but that factor doesn’t make him special in the slightest
Sir Paul McCartney: Hold my beer
The ability to read music has literally zero bearing on creativity and skill.
@@mugwump7049 thank you. Non-musicians are absolutely clueless about this.
Its actually kinda reassuring to hear them say theyre bad musicians cos it kinda doesn't matter if theyre super technical musicians theyre still the reason why i started playing guitar
you can be technical and not know music theory. Plus memory degrades with age and they haven't played a lot of their songs for like, decades lmao even I have to relearn shit I wrote like 5 years ago.
They are great musicans, they just skipped all the thing about "learn the rules so you can break it" and immediatly started at the breaking part whitout knowing they where pushing the rules to their limits so much
@@antoniocenteno1483 Well it's not like James doesn't know harmony/music theory tho, it's not uncompatible with not reading sheet music. But you're mostly right
I’ve even heard guys like Paul McCartney say the same things
@@Nestorglass Is not just about Harony, neither about they not knowing stuff by the book, of course they do, all of them including Lars, they super do, is just that they know it mostly from streeth knowledge rather tha academy, hence why when they where told by Michael Kamen MoP had 5 different time signatures they where joying with how much they didn´t knew about that even though they composed and play the song for ages, in response Jason famously said "we only now about chika chika chika". But yes, they know music. Also i´m sure James comedically lies about not know how to read music, cause he actually does since he learned to play piano before playing guitar and was thought piano lessons wich include sheet reading.

It’s all attainable. Looking at years of experience, mistakes and all, and thinking you should be able to achieve that after a few tries is madness. There are so many people involved in the creation of these songs, don’t ever hold yourself up to an impossible standard. Just have fun creating.
I'm perfectly okay with this. Kirk always gets compared to Slash. Slash never plays the same solo twice. Glad Kirk understands Metallica fans want to hear something close to the record

I could listen to kirks voice forever! It's so beautiful
I love Kirk, he is truly humble person.
0:05 James' sarcasm, lmao!
I love how honest Kirk is and doesn't take himself to seriously.
I remember that clip of Kirk having a hard time playing the main riff James wrote for “Some Kind of Monster” and they were stuck on it together for like 10 mins I was like “bruh why doesn’t James just write it out for him?” But here he is saying he can’t read sheet music so now I’m like “…ahhh… All by ear. Both a blessing…and a curse!” 😅
I remember that part well and it always blew my mind how something so simple could be so annoyingly hard. When you play an instrument like guitar it actually makes a lot of sense he had problems lol
That's called "the note in between is fcking with me" technique
Also another hint of james not being able to read music is when he teaches kirk that riff and instead of saying the name of the notes he points to the frets and says "this one" and "that one" lol
James is always on point. I never hear him deviate from the original riff. Maybe miss a note here and there or plays sloppy but never an altered version.
James is on point.. Kirk has been coddled. He is a Trainwreck of a guitar player
Listen to James solo, Im sure he misses a few notes
James is known for simplifying his riffs live. At least some of them. They sound close enough but according to many people they're not quite as he played them on record.
*/w\TRUTH/w\*
As a player, this isn't shocking at all that they'd have to revisit and learn some songs they maybe haven't played since the studio, which would of been in total fragments anyway and Kirk probably played 14 solo's and they kept the best one or bits of multiple takes even...
Sad but true
Well they are known for touring constantly ,and after every album , knowing that makes more it weird that they might forget ,,
@@wyldelf2685 they have hundreds of songs and only play a handful at their concerts. They could rotate setlists and just play hits let alone their other material. So yeah it's not that weird. Write thousands of songs over ten years and tell me how many you remember off the top of your head.
@@nickg1307 in interviews Publicly James has said that he hates the sound of his own voice on the first 3 albums ,,, this may factor into a lot of this ,,🎃🎃👍
Totally agree. Reverse engineering your songwriting and recording process is very very difficult.

James can't read music?? That makes him even more legendary. Just pure talent!
I remember watching the Black Album documentary and James admitting he can't read music. All those complex, beautiful songs and he doesn't read music. Insane!

That's the worse. I helped a friend out by laying down 10 improv leads, where they would cut and paste the best sections, and then I would do another take of "the best of" lead (I'm a rhythm player by like 90%). Well, I couldn't repeat most of it and was doing things I've never done before, apparently bc I was like "wtf is that run?!"
@@hmpz36911 man i think this is why in the last album when they started performing certain songs Kirk had to remember how he did some of the solos becuase they cut and pasted what they felt were the best parts of all his ideas and mixed them up....a little bit of a different process since its so easy to do that these days.

I think it is easy to forget that we listen to this music WAY more than they do. It isn't like Kirk sits around blasting Metallica all the time. I also think in live shows, you want to mix it up a little bit and have some variety just to keep it from getting so mind numbingly boring for the band. Fellow guitarist all know about forgetting how to play a song you once knew well. Another thing we face is we forget we even knew how to play the song in the first place. I totally forgot I had Zeppelin's Babe I'm Gonna Leave You down....the whole piece, except solo and I am so bummed!! There's this complex acoustic part I call "the dream sequence" where, it uses very complex/obscure chord positionings that I HAD, like 25 years ago, knew perfectly. It looks like.....ugh.....I'm going to have to look it up on the web. You'll be going along in life and hear a song and BOOM...Crap! I use to know how to play this song. Most guys like me have our little "set" we do to show we know how to play...and you HAVE to play them periodically or BOOM....long forgotten. I have, I'd say about 25ish? Songs I always play. I've had several girlfriends complain I play the same songs. Yeah ..it's called practice....and if I don't play them. I'll forget em. That isn't just me, right guys? If you don't play a song once in awhile you'll forget it??

I have all these old videos of jamming with the boys. I wish I could remember how to play that shit. I hate being on camera, so I’m facing the drummer with my back to the camera 90% of the time. Gonna have to try to figure it out by ear some day. There’s a few instances on harder parts where I purposely turn to and walk up close to the camera to show what my hand is doing for future reference. But those instances are very few.

Now that's honesty
It’s not a surprise to be honest, I used to play in a cover band and studied songs until I knew them by heart, but as we progressed to different songs I would have to revisit some to relearn them.
Honesty is the best.
I learned to read music in high school and can't say it's helped me in a band setting, but for personal growth it helped a lot. It gave me a different perspective in which to view music from.
It's a really brave thing to openly admit that you need a songbook to re-learn your part to a certain song. Nothing but respect for Kirk for being willing to say that.
