It wasn't done though. I still needed to finish some details to make it even better. I created a French Cleat holder for my table saw, modified my scroll saw to be clamped anywhere, built a French Cleat large paper roll holder, added electrical outlets, and most importantly, built a comfy swivel seat that slides out when in use and hides away when not in use. The seat really makes this a unique workbench. Enjoy!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

Hey, dude. For the seat, why don’t you attach a wheel/caster and cut a notch (or maybe fold-up wheels) so that when you extend the seat, the weight is not supported by the slides alone?

How would that work? With any attachment directly under the stool, it can't slide in nearly as far as it needs to. Also, it would pretty much ruin the soft puzzle mats he uses. What's the advantage of buying a wheel that reduces how good your workbench is, if you can also just buy new slides in a couple of years? You may even be able to just flip the slides around side to side if they start sagging. It's not like they're going to be extended often, so the only real wear they could have is sag. It'll be many years before those things wear down, so it's just not worth adding a wheel underneath it.

Also wanted to say that Rockler sells some amazing workbench casters that mount on the outside of the table legs and will fold out of the way so that the weight of the bench, while stationary, is completely on the legs/frame. They support up to 400 lbs a piece.

4:20 great idea for mounting the table saw, but I really think it needs additional support in the bottom, going directly onto your floor. The bend in the cleat becomes very visible when you add the saw, it's just not meant to support that weight. Could have safety issues...

      My very first question.

    • @AndrewSanjanwala
      @AndrewSanjanwala 3 года назад

@@bs838 One variable this could introduce is some slop in terms of height-from ground. To resolve that, the legs could attach to slots/lock tabs on the base of the table itself or rest on a load bar on the bottom ledge. This would permit the saw to slide on the cleat. That said, I don't feel that the the cleat is a safe solution for a table saw. At the minimum, a "locking bar" should be installed above the lower rest bar to prevent the assembly from walking up-and-over should kickback with sufficient force occur. It's all unlikely, but a table saw moving while in use easily leads to lost-limbs, and the mode of failure of a french cleat is "Thing Fall Off". I love the idea, but it feels like a lot of risk to me.
I'll absolutely be attaching cleats to my workbench for accessory mounts, though. Brilliant idea.

The sliding seat would have worked perfectly for me when I was 25 years old. Now that I'm 55 I don't think I'd even fit in the cutout. Not to mention, if I was able to squeeze in there..., well let's just say the slides giving way would probably be the only thing saving me from flipping the entire workbench over onto myself. When you get old and fat, like a lot of us who never saw it coming, you may want to add a trailer jack wheel onto the bottom of that seat. Patent Pending

Three things. 1st, I like your work and motivation. Before I give u some feedback. I am a licensed contractor and have been building homes for 30 years. That is now my hobby and I am a senior officer for OSHA and have been for 17 years. 2nd, your wiring is ok. However, using an extension cord wired permanently into a box is against the law. No biggie if you are not a business and have no employees. However, the second you do, it becomes a safety concern for your employees. The fine can be considerably large! 😬. 3rd, when wiring boxes, always leave some extra pig tail before entering the box. This allows for any movement without compromising the wire, it also gives you extra if you need to upgrade what's in your box. Glad to see someone who has trade skills. Keep up the good work!

I love it, except as an Electrician.....I suggest using SJOOW or similar portable high impact resistant cable to feed the power in your tables outlets. Extension cords shouldn't be used in a permanent application.
I will be using some of your ideas in my garage I am working on. Appreciate the video, great work!

Beautiful bench. You should have it on the front of a brochure to advertise your woodworking business, if that is your purpose.
Now...let's take that bench from a nice conversation piece, and make it truly functional.
    1. Outlets from the walls...psst. Thats amateur hour of you. Get yourself some Wiremold, run it up the wall; continue across the ceiling over your bench. 3 or better...5 of them. And put retractable power chord lines over your bench. Each one with its own GFCI. Do I have to remind you to put a surface beam on the ceiling, bolted to the ceiling joists, over the bench to resist the stress of the retractable power lines, and eliminate any future retractable power chord damaging the ceiling ? Enough said.
    2. You should have put 5/4 tongue and groove boards, sandwhiched between your plywood sheets. So you could have bored holes on your bench top in a useful linear pattern to have bench holdfast inserts. Once you use one, you never want to stop using them. They are addictive. Get hand forged blacksmith made one's. They will last forever. And blacksmiths can make you some custom ones for extra reach into a piece. The best I have ever seen were hand made, and the tip that held down the wood, had two holes in line to screw in a piece of wood, to provide support for very expensive woods. Gramercy Tools makes great ones.
    3. Stop giving excuses, and put a bloody caster underneath that retractable bench. That it will not make it able to fully retract you say.
"Piss poor planning provides piss poor production"
You should have planned a cutout on the bottom footing, of the bench to accommodate the heavy duty caster getting tucked in.
When something can go wrong, it usually occurs at the worst possible moment. If that seat cracks or gets damaged, you might be sick at the time, or hurt, or out of your best game, and it will be a royal pain in the butt to fix. Have it done. NOW!
    4. Dress the edge of the bench with a 3/8" or 1/2" inch round over bit with your router. Rounded edges stand up to dings betteŕ than sharp 90 degree one's.
    5. Lacquer your bench several times, sanding or using brass wool on each coat. Why? Dirt will get into the pores of the wood. Lacquered wood is easier to keep clean. Dirty benches show disregard for your bench.
    6. I am the only one who seems to have made a habit of this idea im going to give you. It will make your bench more useful. Put in 2 cutouts on the bench top, reaching all the way through. Build it with a removable coveŕ, to hide it when not being used. I used to make mine 5 x 8 inches. Why?
So that when I had to bore a hole in a piece of wood, I could do it while the piece laid on top of the bench; fully supported. What did I do to find the exact position of the cutout, if the piece to be bored covered the cutout?
I built a template for each cutout, that had the exact position of the cutouts, and it straddled the width of the bench,
    and locked into registration holes.
    7. Inlay a glued metal measuring rule on the benchtop to quick measure pieces you are working on. Find a long one. Put it on the longest side of your bench, opposite your cutout. And another on a short end of your bench.

Ok tough guy, let’s see you flip off the table with the table saw hooked up and running. This was great man, gave me perfect blue print to build mine. I really like the cleat for table saw. Also, don’t underestimate some heavy duty casters. 4 good casters can handle 1000lb no problem. 8 will be sufficient for elephant roller skates.

That is an amazing bench. However, that slide out seat is doomed to fail. Putting caster wheels on the bottom of the seat supports would solve the problem of relying on the glides that only hold 150 #'s. (You'd better not gain anyweight if you don't...and even then, those glides won't last.)
    Fantastic design and build however.

Talking about drawer slides at their weight limit - use two sets? According to your math 4 would hold 300 lbs. Anyway, nice job, ill probably "borrow" some of your ideas.

I bet you worry about that cool seat idea breaking. Still using it? i had 2 ideas. Add 2 slides to each side, stacked and add a caster to the base and it will never break. You have some really great ideas. Took lots of screen shots. Keep it up! My channel is in the making. 316 Woodworks. Starting it out as a hobby. We'll see how it works out. You shoulve made the main outlet on the bench 'unpluggable' so you aren't forced to use the cable "forever". Not sure if I explained myself correctly, something like extension cord that you can unplug from the bench and move it around when you decide/need to. Great work btw I really enjoy your content.

  • @roadshowautosports

Love the project and flexibility but I’d definitely add one caster under the seat!!!! With only one caster you would be safer since one gotta account for the fact that the drawer extensions aren’t designed for twisting and that will happen naturally whenever you move or rotate! Considering that you are pretty much at the limit weight of the extensions, the caster can save you from some serious injuries if you fall while working any kind of machinery.
Not criticizing but recommending something to keep you safe!
    Good luck!

Hey, I have concern about your power cord to your workbench. You said you put it in the expansion joint of the slab. I would recommend either a) not doing that, or b) use a concrete wet saw to cut a larger groove in the concrete. I don’t know where you’re based, but I’m warmer summer months, concrete definitely expands and could pinch the cable, resulting in a short/reduction of power. Not a concern as we head into winter, but maybe look at revising how you get power to your bench. Otherwise, great vid, great content, keep on trucking!

I love the seat idea. Would a 45-degree notch in 2 4x4's work in place of a slide? Not as smooth sure, but for those of us over 150Lbs. Industrial round tube sliders would also work but would cost more.
