Destruction of a sense of pride in one's culture, language, traditions and imposition of unnecessary english traits like eating with fork/spoon,dressing up in suits etc. 3. Commodification of human beings, women in particular in corporate culture, fields of entertainment and showbizz. 4. Money is a mere way to put the Indians out of the misery. The money can be used in unimaginable ways to better the life of people in India. It is not the only solution but it's a start.
+vinita manek Britain has provided billions in foreign aid as it is to the Indian government. I don't see how funneling even more money to India is going to solve their problems. This is a country that still has designated shitting streets for God's sake.
+Kyle Donahue It is true that people shit on streets in India but perhaps what you don't know is that they don't do so because they enjoy it, they do so because they are poor and there aren't much facilities available. India is widely divided between people who are billionaires ( people who couldn't care less about what is happening) affluent people ( those who like to ignore the non availability of services because they can afford it themselves) and the miserable poor. Unfortunately, the aid never reaches them. India spends around 70 billion pounds on welfare schemes and the British aid is merely 200 million pounds, it is not the money but the British Aid can make sure that 70 billion pounds are spent effectively and it reaches to the right people.
The ''people who had no hand in the events paying money to people who did not suffer from them'' point is quite a strong argument in my view. A separate issue is the government making an official state apology in regards to any specific documented and widely acknowledged atrocity, that seems reasonable to me.

"We can not reevaluate historical events through the prism of todays values" This is so important. Life was hard everywhere including Britain. Our values have changed. If India had carried on being a colony it would have developed similar to Britain with similar rights and opportunities.
He is absolutely right. Why should today's british taxpayers pay reparations to us Indians? And even if we don't agree with the speaker atleast be respectful in the comments. He is absolutely entitled to his views. It is because of the British ideals of free speech that Mr. Tharoor has been invited to the British soil to attack colonisation. 'Might is right' was a norm in those days, it is also the western civilisation which introduced the concept of war crimes and human rights.
Did he actually raise and argument against reparation? It was so weak 😂😭🤣. It was such because Britain does not have a solid argument against it because there is no way one can justify taking what was not yours that set a platform for ones continued growth to the detriment of those one oppressed. Their big argument is that they 'civilized' us to European standards.

And from 1807 the West Africa Squadron RN patrolled the Atlantic for the best part of a century freeing slaves of other slaving countries and repatriating them to Africa, this notwithstanding the slave trade from East Africa to Arabia...
The problem with reperations is: -How long do we go back? And there better be a damn good reason for whatever length of time. -How can we calcule how much wealth taken out when corruption was rife and documents are more than likely to be exploited and corrupted? -How can we factor in the positive outcomes in terms of wealth? -Who does the money go to? Especially with a lot of corrupt African governments that just take money from charities and keep it. -Why should the people in England suffer for the suffering of others caused by long dead people. Eye for an eye huh? -Where can we even direct money from with such failings in our own healthcare, millitary, education and councils? -Since much care is put into past suffering how can we be CERTAIN money we send to countries doesn't go into more suffering? These important questions seem to go overlooked by people just repeating "Britain's commited past crimes, we should pay" I don't deny the exploration of the past British empire, however if we start literally paying for the wrong doings of the past then how long before we arrest the children of criminals? It's the same logic. 'Your father caused the suffering of others, you should suffer.' I would also like to make a point that there was a lot of EMOTION involved from the speaker and the audience. We can't let emotion cloud rational ideas. There is no place for emotion in rational discussion.
I agree with you and you should know that after the second world war Germany gave money to the Jewish state for what they did in the holocaust and the Israeli government took most of the money because Israel were poor country and they needed it( many people in the Israeli public didn't want to get money from Germany but Germany still giving money today to the people who been trough the horror of the holocaust

2. Destruction of a sense of pride in one's culture, language, traditions and imposition of unnecessary english traits like eating with fork/spoon,dressing up in suits etc.

Can the speaker go to the former colonies where children do not have access to education, are malnutritional and have to work the fields without a proper childhood and ask why he/she has to go through a life so difficult and why he has to pay the price for his ancestors not being able to prevent the exploitations? The speaker's logic is beyond my understanding - by his logic if his parents steal stuff and then die and later the court finds that the stuff was stolen, then he should not have to payback the stolen object because his parents stole it, not him.

If Canada's PM Justin Trudeau can apologize after 100 years for Komagata maru accident where even canada had nothing to do with and Germans can apologize to Poland then you can also apologize . Britain is also country on this planet.
South asians (Indians/Paks/Bengalis) had weak men, with no backbone/strength. They have been ruled by the Pathans/Persians, Mongols/mughals and then British. The men of these territories are so proud that they fought for the empire like a loyal dog.
It happened 200 years before I was born, I didn't do it so I won't be apologizing. Get it?

That Indian had to understand that if Britain owes reparations to India than india should also have to give the reward to Britain for which india is obliged and grateful towards the great Britain which provided India with lots of previous things including justice system, architecture, etc.
No wonder we have to understand that Britain did nothing wrong with india infact it had always tries to make india a modern nation and therefore Britain did not owes any reparations to india. In fact india has to make reparations to The Great Britain as Indians always blame Britain to the wrong they made in Indian subcontinent.

The problem is the Eurocentric view of the world coupled with the Europe's supremacist notion of being better than the rest of the world. Just look at how he speaks down to Shashi Tharoor when he just simply pointed out an inaccuracy in his facts 05:45
Too bad Shashi Tharoor destroyed him and reduced the Ottoway argument to literal "shit" during his own response in the debate 🤣🤣
Looks like he's landed straight from the 1800's camouflaged by complete arrogance one can expect from a British colonialist with an overdose of SHIT.
The only gentleman who'd partaken in this debate and had literally the entire floor on the edge of their seats was Mr.Shashi Tharoor. Thought I'd hear some classical good counter debates to Mr. Shashi Tharoor, but what I get is an emotional biased justification, which starts with a good logical advice of keeping it away.
Colonial history should be taught to reporters of BBC.

British💂 the ☀️sun has set.
British government should at least apologize for colonization and as a symbol return kohinoor
I know most people have flocked here to say the empire was appaling or it was great but what people forget is that the majority of english people at the time had nothing to do with it. Most people were working class who suffered awfull conditions during the time of the empire. It did not benefit our people, only the very richest in society so it angers me when our entire nation gets blamed for somrthing that none of us now actually did and 99%of our ancestors also did not do. I know it sounds bad to 'not take accountability' for it but i do not see why most people today who have no problem with india should be punished for a crime they did not commit. We are ashamed of what happened but we cant do anymore than that
The world may have moved on but the people have not moved on and we're not going to move on until you do what is Right😎😎😎!
None of them has anything to do with the colonisation and none of the present Indians have suffered at their hands .It is indeed an inferiority complex and an excuse for the present Indian leaders to hide their failures to reduce poverty in India.

No! No one today has been a slave and no one has owned a slave before
Did he actually raise and argument against reparation? It was so weak 😂😭🤣. It was such because Britain does not have a solid argument against it because there is no way one can justify taking what was not yours that set a platform for ones continued growth to the detriment of those one oppressed. Their big argument is that they 'civilized' us to European standards.
Civilized us by making richest country to the poorest , literacy rate of 17 %, growth rate of 0.001 % for more than 200 years. Stolen all the artifacts and then flaunting them to the British museum, These people are such rude and arrogant despite they know everything they have done everything brutally and destroyed the countries they are not apologistic . Even Canada and Germans other western countries are polite than these.
Your country has taken things that weren't yours.
But then Britain stole like 15 countries
India has Head of State - the President of India (elected).
Head of Govt - PM (elected).
We are part of commonwealth just so that you can feel good. Nothing more.
6:26 If you can ask your taxpayers to cough up cash for the meaningless shit the royals get like the palace, weddings, dresses etc, it is easy to finance reperations. It's just a question of nonsensical things like 'British Pride' and shit like that
And from 1807 the West Africa Squadron RN patrolled the Atlantic for the best part of a century freeing slaves of other slaving countries and repatriating them to Africa, this notwithstanding the slave trade from East Africa to Arabia...
The problem with reperations is:
-How long do we go back?
'Your father caused the suffering of others, you should suffer.'
I would also like to make a point that there was a lot of EMOTION involved from the speaker and the audience.
Just return the artifacts and jewels and we will be happy. We don't want 'reparations'.
you dont need to make uk bankerupt for what they they but that would be the case if they are to repay for the atrocities. jewels, artifacts, trade routes, allies, some wealth etc. in fact, uk did not even apologize to any of the colonized nations.
