For me what puts this song over the top to make it my favorite QOTSA song is that magical outro. Re: more harmonies...where they went heavy in harmonies was the solo. Adding the arpeggios to the original adds a depth of feeling...this song has so many layers, ALL of which are LOVELY.
You liked it!!! That is the incredible Jon Theodore on drums and Michael Schuman, a.k.a. Mikey Shoes on bass. But everyone is amazing here. Josh Homme on lead vocals and guitar, Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar, and Dean Fertita on keyboards. My favorite band. 💜
Great to find this channel! I'm a massive fan of Queens, and you nailed this. The drums, a hallmark of theirs since Dave, are almost always exceptional. On this track, and I think this might be a first for me, the bass was just so unbelievably insane. It wasn't just the picking, it was the tempo change. And it was something else.
Jon Theodore is an absolute beast of a drummer. His work with Golden, The Mars Volta and QOTSA is some of the most powerful shit from a modern rock drummer.
@@ericthornberg yup no need to worry, recorded all the drums on the new album and is crushing it on tour with them right now, now been their drummer for a decade and probably will be for the foreseeable future unless he decides to leave. Jon rules and the whole band lineup rt now is incredible
Boy do I like this song. Man is it set up for a drummer to go crazy in this song. He's able to do his own thing back there. Now the rest of the band just kept grooving along and it sounded good. Will look to listen to this again.
I appreciate that you check out so many live performances. This was a great one (performance) for this tune. This is a really good song from QOTSA's best album. My personal opinion: I love a great track, but if a band can't play it as good, if not better live, then it is not as great a song as it could have been. Glad you pointed out the harmonies!
Great song. Great album. I always liked that "Smooth Sailing" came before "I Appear Missing" on the album. It's like two sides of the same coin flipside type of thing. In the end this'll always be my top favorite bands.
Just discovered your channel, and I LOVE it!!!! Not sure if you're taking suggestions (and maybe I'm not telling you anything new), but whether you do a reaction or not, check out Them Crooked Vultures. I never hear anyone talk about them, and I don't understand why. Side project from 2009 - absolute POWERHOUSE trio: Dave Grohl on drums, Josh Homme (QOTSA) on vocals, and...wait for it...John Paul FRIGGIN' Jones. Dave keeps teasing another album, but after almost 15 years, my hope is waning. I saw them live before the album was released, and I was BLOWN AWAY. If you're interested, start with the first track "No One Loves Me and Neither Do I" and/or "Caligulove." But the whole album is great. The fusion of those 3 artists (in my opinion) is just out of this world.
I've done a couple of reactions to Them Crooked Vultures already, and I have a new one coming out in October. I just finished editing it yesterday and I'll be uploading it today for release in mid-October.
How to Handle a Rope or Regular John studio versions are the place to start with this band. You're not getting the intent by sticking to live versions.
Hey, David, I'm sorry man. My speechl to text doesn't work very well. I appreciate you trying to make point and give me Recognition with the reading of mine. But I was trying to say that Third Eye Blind is very good. I know people think they're cheesy but if you get to some of their deep cuts. You'll find a really good song writer on Steven Jenkins.
One of my favorite songs, buddy, this is a great 1 man. You do a lot of the good songs like I'm glad you hit Pearl Jam up. Eddie better as a genius and you've found another genius. I say and don't laugh at me. But I always loved Mike Patton from Faith and more. I've always loved Eddie Vedder and josh home And Steven Jenkins from Third Eye Blind, no I know people's dig up their eyebrow and it's cheesy get into the blue up. Check that out, check out out of the vein, check out Ursa major I'm telling you, I'm telling you. Steven jenkins is one of my favorite song Writers don't think about it do do do....do da do do.. The whole first album is amazing except for that song. I mean, even that song if you had this has been played out but you should check out some Is third eye blind
You should really react to Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan live at the celebration of blues and soul. I know it isn’t your kind of music, but it is very rock and roll. I have no doubt you would enjoy it!
I did a reaction to Texas Flood. I had to take it down. Despite the high score I gave it, and all the praise I heaped upon SRV, you would not BELIEVE the hateful, spiteful comments I was getting from the SRV faithful. I was getting a ton of heat, including death threats for me and for my family. So I took it down, it's a shame, but I'm not gonna deal with that kind of nonsense.
@@THEDavidHeretic wow. That is absolutely awful. There is no place for hate in music and I’m ashamed in the srv fanbase for acting that way. I’m really sorry for that.
@@austinvanderheyden Jon is a fantastic player. I remember his playing with The Mars Volta. Incredible stuff. But Dave has that thing and he and QOTSA just have something special when they get together. That can't be repeated live by anyone else.
I have no idea why people keep picking live versions with the worst possible mix. This is a superb song, there are many more better recordings, and the studio version is excellent, but this mix is horrible. Do yourself a favour David and check out the album version

What an album. Banger from front to back as usual, but this album had a darkness to it that made me sink my teeth in from first listen.
My favorite song from them. And they’re my favorite band!

One of my favorites of theirs for sure! Glad to hear more on the subject of how the more unique things become the less they’re used
Jon Theodore is one of the best back there on drums. Miss him with “QOTSA”
He’s still with the band lol

The studio version should be heard first anyhow. The composition is complicated.
And drummed by Dave, not Jon.

If you’ve never heard Deloused in the Comatorium or Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta, it’s a polyrhythmic drum clinic by Jon Theodore.
Finally the patreon peeps do qotsa justice. The lyrics to this song are very poignant
