I am going to write this in English so more people can understand. Separable Verbs are the absolute core of Dutch language, and there is not enough material out there, so again Kim hit the nail on the head by choosing a very relevant area to share and teach. The internet and Dutch Language Books are plagued with the Beginner Mentality, which is to make everything down to just basic words and basic sentences and never really getting to the next level and the next level. With Kim you can feel that you are getting somewhere each time. Absolute Beginners please go somewhere else and then come back to have your mind blown. Now: my contribution to whomever is down and serious about learning Separable Verbs in Dutch is to find a second part that if combined with all sorts of prepositions, will make different verbs. This way you won't feel so confused. Here's an example: - The verb Sluiten (to close, to conclude). So now try to add the prepositions: af, aan, op, in, uit and you will get completely different verbs. AFsluiten (close off, shutdown), AANsluiten (Join, Connect), OPsluiten (to lock, imprision), INsluiten (Contain, embed), UITsluiten (exclude), ... You can to this with tons of verbs like Werpen, Slaan, Wegen, etc. And every time you add a different preposition you will get a different verb. Preposition list is also quite big, so besides, AF, AAN, OP, IN, and UIT you also have OVER, ONDER, VOOR, TEGEN, MEE, WEG, TERUG, DOOR, NA, TOE, SAMEN, etc, and a special list like ONT, BE, VER, ZICH but these last 4 do not make up separable verbs but they can confuse you. Like OPwegen (compensate, it is a separable verb) and Bewegen (to move, this is *not* a separable verb). And then not all verbs that start with those prepositions, mean they are separable. Like Aanvaarden (to accept) and like Kim mentioned, the tone is not on AAN but on VAAR so if you know where the tone is, you get a pretty good idea if they are separable or not. That is the magic uncomfortable zone of Dutch
Your follow-up explanation is super helpful. I'm stuck in A2-B1 hell and this is one of the main challenges for me as a native English speaker migrating to Dutch. Kim's video makes so much sense and is so beautifully broken down in a logical, sequential manner (as are all of her materials).
Thank you so much for all these videos! They are helping me a lot! They are so practical, this exactly what I miss while I am studying: having the sentences and words applied to daily situation!
Again, many thanks for your useful and well explanied vidoes. kindly can you continue doing videos regarding the same subject and to give more examples of the separabel verbs. thank you in advance. greetings from Belgium.
Dutchies to be - Learn Dutch with Kim Hey Kim? Let me try and translate that whole Ik wil een krokodil song! XD Yes I used google translator and something else and not counting the other bairns repeating what Eva says! Sort of! First verse. I had written on my my bucket list, I badly want a real crocodile but do you know what my mother had given? A turtle that I actually don’t want. I think such turtle’s boring then I was allowed a parrot but when the beast came the I shouted far too tame! Chorus. I want a crocodile as a pet that’s much more fun than a snake, I want a crocodile as pet but my mother is scared in advance! She thinks such creature far too scary I think that’s a big deal! She wants me to be happy with a cat or a canary. From that you get scared of it right? From that, that’s why I scream loudly I want, I want I want a crocodile! A croco croco crocodile! I want. I want a crocodile! Second verse. My mother said where would such beast sleep then? But I WILL make a little sport under my bed but I did have my mind set on that! I don’t need a goldfish in a bowl and I also find rabbits stupid so that’s I why I called out don’t you get it mum? I find them far to tame! Chorus again!

Hi, Kim! Great video as always. Cleared up most of my doubts on this subject. But what about when there's more than one auxiliary verb? I've come across 'Ik wil rustig na kunnen denken.' which got me very confused... What's the rule there? Does it have to be a modal verb?
I am pretty sure that you said that, if there is the word 'er' in a sentence, then the verb is separated. If this is correct? Then can you explain why this example is not separated? Wie wil er iets toevoegen?
Hoi Tanya, no I said when "te" is in the sentence the verbs is separated when it's in the infinitive form. With "er" it isn't when it's in the infinitive form :)
That's the reason why I have sooooooo much respect for anybody who is learning or hast learned German (or Dutch) because the grammar must be soooooo hard and confusing. And why I ad a German am really glad there are so many similarities in word order and grammar so I don't have to think about it too much 😇
Hi darling, you make really good video but the Arabic subtitles can't let us seeing the sentence in Dutch. It's a pite, I am Arabic- but i prefer reading in Dutch . I suggest to change the place or the time of subtitles.
Kim, you are the best, maaaar is het moeilijk voor mij... haha... I really need to be more advanced to understand all these rules.... for now I'm going to make a mess of all these verbs :(
Yes it’s hard! The thing you can recognize it on in infinitives is the stress on the first part. But when you’re reading a sentence and it’s already conjugated it’s harder to recognize, I admit. I will make another video about this topic, how to learn to recognize them :)
Heel goed! Een heel flauwe opmerking, maar schijtbare werkwoorden? De openbare toiletrecensent weet er raad mee. Zou er dan misschien een verschil in uitspraak bestaan? Niet dus!
Kim, dit verschil in woordvolgorde begrijp ik nog altijd niet. Heb jij tijd om deze papieren UIT te zoeken? Heb jij tijd om OP mijn kinderen te letten? (Lastig om uit te leggen aan iemand die Nederlands leert).

Im not gonna lie, it's really pleasure learning with you but this channel is more like for expirienced or skilled level students.. I walked thru the moust of your videos and first thought was that you shold do at least 10 videos of basic simple words and frases for absolute begginers. You have amaizing mechanism to reach people and hit the spot when you explain and i like that, just think you should dedicate lite more for newbie students and thats it..
Thank you for your comment! Did you see my whole beginners' course playlist? It starts from scratch! This particular video about separable verbs is more for intermediates indeed. Good luck!
En waarom “Jack” een boy’s name is because of the name “John” somehow! XD

Are separable verbs in dutch like phrasal verbs in english?

A really mean one is "erop uittrekken" of erop uit trekken". Even Dutch linguists are not sure about that one.
