- Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Lotuff Leather creates handcrafted leather goods with their team of twenty two employees. One of their most complicated bags, the Triumph Briefcase, requires a multitude of skill sets to create; from leather working, to painting, to hand-stitching.

The artistry and the fact you pay livable wages, have employee benifits and care that your staff is not over worked so than can focus on their own art. As well producing a very high quality product that will last a lifetime is truly incredible. Well done this is what companies should thrive to be.
@Shlomo Goldsteinmenbergvitz obvious troll is obvious
Everyone complaining about the 1% is ignoring the fact this company employs at least 20 people and gives them a fair wage, as well as benefits. So go ahead, buy mass produced, cheaper products. Line the pockets of the people you claim to hate by buying exclusively from them, and put this company out of business. Bottom line, hiring people and paying them a fair wage costs a lot. That cost is passed down to the consumer. When you buy a bag from this company you're not just forking over $1k+ for a single bag. You're helping a fellow American pay their bills and put food on the table. I for one would rather own less, and support companies like this. Too bad this is not a sentiment shared by many. If it was, we might not be in the dire economic straights we're in right now as a country.
If you used that bag everyday for less than 3.5 years the value to you is quite high at a dollar a day. This value is even higher when the design is timeless and the construction is tough and thought out so you can continue to wear and use season after season instead of buying a bunch of cheaper bags that fall out of favor or their lifespan has ended.
It boggles my mind that people don't look at cost per use. A two thousand dollar bag is a bargain if it's the only one you ever have to buy. Products like this usually end up costing pennies a day to own, and if you take care of something like this they typically retain their value really well.
Uh-huh, really fucking easy for you to say how much of a "bargain" this is when you can painlessly spend that kind of money on a bag there Morgan. What do you make, $180,000 a year or more and drive around in a luxury car that has $700 a month insurance payments? Come down to earth with the rest of the peons dickhead and have a bit of consideration for the majority who can't piss away that kind of brass on a bag.
I guarantee it costs more than a thousand just to make the bag. This is what things cost when you use actual artisans that can actually support themselves from their work and don’t outsource or use practically slave labor to manufacture things. They’re a relatively new company so the standard practice is to have very thin profit margins to attract a large client base before raising prices to more appropriate margins. They’re not price gouging, they’re asking a VERY fair price.
Thank you for understanding this structure. Most people just don't get it.
I still using my iPhone 5S.
I was actually expecting the price to be $3XXX+
People pay far more for designer bags that have nowhere near the craftsmanship.
David W Ingelson This is a designer bag..
@@Poseidon650 I'd consider this bag to be a lot more than that. Designer bags can be churned out of factories and sold because of the name emblazoned on it. These bags are handcrafted and are luxury for the craftsmanship, not the brand.
everyone freaking out about the price but no one freaks out about paying 1000 for an iphone that only last a year before you gotta upgrade...
Not freaking out about price, but about why people feel the need still to use animal skins for products. There's no need for this cruelty in this day and age.
While there are vegan leather options like polyurethane, it’s not as ethical as this high quality leather Lotuff uses. Vegan leather degrades much more faster than regular leather which adds to more waste in our environment. Also, making polyurtherane is dangerous to make. Most of it is made out of petroleum or other crude oils which cannot biodegrade. In the True Cost, there were third world workers risking their lives everyday just to make this “ethical” leather.
Catherine Pedersen sis...... quality leather lasts forever and I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with ethical leather harvesting
raymond gonzalez I bought my iPhone5 5 years ago for around $300 and it still serves me perfectly. Not gonna upgrade until it fails to work. Speaking of quality leather bags, there are Italian companies, offering made in Italy leather briefcases of very decent quality in $250-500 range. Why should a young, unknown company sell their average level products for over a $1000? Still, I wish them all the best! It's great that "made in USA" isn't dead.
@@KitoMonster Not sure how they do it in your region but here leather is made from dead cattle and buffaloes. You can't kill cows in most of our states.
Everything is worth what its purchaser is willing to pay for it. Handmade goods like this, with the amount of care put into it, is an art and they treat it like an art. Essentially, for each bag they are making is a masterpiece so of course they're going to be expensive.
jmsloss they’re not expensive because of art, they’re expensive because of LABOR
No thanks, I'm not spending a month of my salary on a bag.
thank you master
@@acampoverdeify if that purse costs as much as your monthly salary, didn't you think that MAYBE you're not the targeted buyer?
Yeah, neither me, not 90% of people.
I am so glad to see this. I went to design school in NYC and it is VERY hard to do what you're doing and the fact that you have combined that with helping other artists is fantastic. I can't tell you how many shops and studios have closed in the 20 + years I have lived in NYC. As for the price - this is a piece you are meant to keep for almost the rest of your life. If you take the $1600 and divide that by 20 years (yes at least 20 years), that's $80 a year. These bags will only get better with age and will keep you from dumping countless number of cheap bags into the land fields once they've fallen apart. It's not about bragging to your friends that you can afford an expensive bag.
I bought a vintage Coach leather bag (I think early 1990s) two years ago and with daily use, it still looks new. I would definitely save up to buy one of these.
People complaining about the bags being expensive. You guys want manufacturing to come back to America, you guys want the people making the manufacturing to be paid well but then you want the items they make to be cheap. Thats some fantasy shit.
ۛ a leather bag has more function than a plastic one.. plastic can barely support a college book
ۛ the voice of someone who doesn’t understand the value and quality of handmade items vs. garbage that falls apart in a few days of use. XD
ۛ people spend more money on iPhones, tablets, and computers that they get rid of far faster than you would ever spend on a bag like this. Mainly, because you only have to do it once. Not once a year or once every two years. A bag like this would last you your entire life. Which, if you do the math, vastly offsets the cost of the bag. Better to buy something amazing once, that is utilitarian and will last a life time, than spend all your money, every year, replacing garbage. It’s the same reason I weave, knit and sew most of my own clothes. Because I have no interest in spending money on garbage clothes that are faddish and fall apart in 2 washes when I can have complete control over the fiber content, dyes, and quality. The better statement would be, if you want to invest your money into garbage which falls apart so readily, then have at. No one is forcing you to have quality goods that will last your whole life.
I bet that factory smells amazing....love the smell of leather!
Me too
What about the smell of all that paint and glue?
Just whatever you do, don't visit the tannery!

Fantastic as a native Rhode Islander to see there are still great things being made here!! Bravo for your beautiful work. ❤️❤️👏🏼 Now I totally want one of your beautiful bags.
With everything else in life, you get what you pay for. Keep it up Lotuff
Great unisex bag at a SUPER low price. Was expecting at least $1,500 - $2,000 for this. Very reasonable very impressive
Malthizar when she said it takes 5 weeks I was expecting 5,000 at least, people drop that much on shoes no problem
I think this is not just about the cost of the bag. It's also about offering an affordable living to artist who can use their talent towards trade and still be able to focus on personal studio time.
@tyvek05 /r/wooosh
A successful company has to make profit, spare something for the future and take care of its workers - also grow at least to a certain extent to become more stable. The price must include all this and everything else. These bags definitely aren't about how cheap it could be made but about how cheap it can be in the long run taking everything into account so that the company is able to concentrate on quality in every step.
I think that price was quite low for a what was shown. On the other hand I have a proper English made bag that costs a bit above one third of these and is still awesome. It might last longer than me - at least with repairs done by the manufacturer. I call that cheap.
@tyvek05 Same quality for $750? Let's see one of yours against one of theirs.
This would be my first luxury bag of choice (If I ever thought about getting one) and I would pay well over $1,200 for it. So inspiring.
There's nothing wrong with mass production, the problem is we don't have quality goods being made anymore.
@Onkar Sawant the charging cables are terrible.
Apple cables are no bad.
Adam Frisk yes they are, they used to be better with the 30 pin connector. Now they are weak and easily torn.
iPhone are horrible once a new iPhone comes out they barely function anymore 😉
TeenQonservative yes cables are phones?
Not that I can afford this at all, but I expected this bag to be significantly more expensive than it was. You're telling me that this 60 piece bag that takes up to a month and a half to make, with all these specifications for the leather and thread, is only 1200? This is a very very fair price.
LVMH and Kering don't come even close to this. This is real LUXURY. The ethical one too.
To the people complaining about the price, these are quite reasonable for what you're getting. Moreover, I think it's gross when people complain about the price of something like this. This is what it costs to make something when you're not paying for workers $2 a day. You don't get to get complain that people need to earn a living wage, and then get upset when goods produced by companies that pay their workers a living wage and locally source their materials charge more for their products.
Most products nowadays are way, way too cheap. If you adjust prices from the fifties, when goods like this were still commonly made here, this is about what they cost. When you buy something like this, it's a lifetime investment, so in the long run this is going to cost you a lot less money than a cheaply made bag.
America needs more brands like these. A company like this can keep jobs in the States, produce quality products to boost GDP, and turn the country's reputation back toward one of quality, excellence, and attention to detail.
So many hateful comments but some buy Hermes and other luxury bags that cost ten folds of this.
Yes but that's an Hermes , and we (well, people , i don) buy the brand not just the product , Although the quality of Hermes bags is amazing but the name value is huge . 10 years or 20 years after you purchased it, you can still sell your vintage Hermes for the same fee you bought it (especially if you kept the box and little pouch ), even more if it is a limited edition . But these bags here, won't even be worth their weight in leather 5 years after you buy them .
People buy Hermes for the name, it comes with prestige and resale value. Why spend a lot of money on an unknown brand, not saying they're not quality, instead of an iconic brand ? There are many cheaper options if you want quality.
@Alex Undiscovery Can you point out how exactly is my english fucked up ? Just show me any sentence I wrote, which isn't proper english, and then show me how YOU would have written it .

These workers looks clean and respected .
Loved the insight into the production and the price point is fair. Cool video
Watches this after watching vids about ppl trying to track down a $14,000 hermes bag. The same level of craftsmanship and work goes into something like this so the price is totally justified I reckon. This is more individual as well which is a plus. Support artists, support sustainable fashion. This is great!
It's impossible not to buy :

Thank You dear Bloomberg !
Fascinating, and beautiful. Thank you to all who made this video and to all who make these bags.
My husband and I were considering buying a Lotuff weekender bag each and this video convinced us! Thank you for sharing this incredible production process :)
these are the kinda places i’d love to work at
One can tell the dedication workers have to fine craftsmanship, assuring precise details for a beautiful product. I don't the the big manufacturers do this as well.
Just Beautiful! This video is very inspirational. Our brand has just started creating handbags and I’m learning all the steps your team has mastered. Thank you for the visual.
Wow amazing work..
Anything that the souls get involved in is one of a kind; unlike anything else.
I'd get this over a "designer bag" any day. Beautiful work!
There will always be market for luxury goods. For the mere mortals we have Walmart.
rotate85 thats the problem, instead of going without for a month or two, you take yourself to walmart to buy cheap crap. Instead of having one of something for 10 years, you want to buy 25 different things. That type of thinking is why we have very few manufacturing jobs in the united states and why the landfills are filling up with useless purchases. Try making some sacrifices and buying quality, get out of the walmart mindset.
i'm too poor to buy cheap stuff... i don't need those kinds of bags, but if i would, i'd buy something like theirs.
and what's even sadder is the people buying this $1,200 bag will end up throwing it out or buying a different once after a couple years.
SoundSpark highly doubt that these are investments pieces that will never go out of fashion
This isn't a luxury bag. Its an investment piece. Your mindset is off. You think that if you have to save for something it's luxury. This is a lifetime purchase. With normal everyday wear it can last beyond your life. That's more than worth $1000. If you get impatient or want change, that's not the bag's fault.
I want that briefcase in blue. ...after watching this it gives me a new perspective and appreciation for the art of leather goods
I have a lotuff purse and it’s amazing. Absolutely worth the money.
This is really cool - the level of detail and focus on meaningful work, quality of design and build. Very impressed
America needs more of this
America can't afford this from a cost perspective and a manufacturing capacity perspective
Then stop selling overprice goods and you'll get more of it.

Yes, bring handmade back to America! This will spark a creative renaissance we have never seen. In fact, small cities like Paterson, NJ was a leading in the silk industry during the Industrial Age. We need to teach and promote this to our Millennial generations, who group up on video games and smartphones. Like the Industrial Age was the paradigm shift of its era, The smartphone and digital was a paradigm shift for millennials. But that’s almost 10 years old since the first iPhone and Android phones. What’s the next paradigm shift around the corner that will spark a new industry.
Yeah, that won't happen. People aren't gonna drop $1,200 for bag. It's a nice bag but not worth what she thinks its worth.
Lots of people making the point that the mass produced stuff is way less costly and *perhaps* as good. As a manufacturer, let me shed some light on how this kind of company justifies a $1200 pricetag- for one thing, not just rich people but some in the middle class will decide that they are tired of disposable crap, and for a variety of emotional or rational reasons, fix their eyes on a few things which are really, really nice. This at once justifies the high price. For others, the fact that this was made by people, amd moreover people who are really into what they do, makes the product exist as a physical expression of talent. This will also cover the bill. Lastly, while there is no technical reason why automated production can't equal the quality of hand production and still beat it on cost, the economic case is lacking- many automated production techniques will require certain concessions on materials or throughput or maintenance or all three. Many hand techniques allow for more difficult work to be done, on the trade-off of higher wages against a fabulously high one-time equipment purchase and high maintenance costs. And of course, why spend all that extra money to make machines do exactly the same work as humans, only to leave money on the table by way of a far lower price?
unclejoeoakland Came here to say this; leaving satisfied.
@@mr7wi just wondering, do you by any chance run any sort of manufacturing concern? As it is, I'm glad that you agree with my sentiment or indeed that I agree with yours
Not in mfg. I just appreciate the craftsmanship. It’s an item that will improve over time. Not wear out.
It's not just handmade, it's quality made by workers in a 1st world country being paid 1st world wages and benefits to do quality work. In a construction worker who wore Lee jeans for decades. They became so poor in quality I now only wear jeans made in America. Look them up on the internet, All American clothing. Jeans, denim, shirts, ect. They cost a little more but they are worth the money and the job you provide might be a family member!
@@stevep5408 THANK YOU! Exactly the point. You get what you pay for. You also pay for what you need, whether you buy it or not.

In the long run this is a bag that can be used to pass on to your kids and then grand kids and great grand kids until it's in a museum
In 2-3 years those bag will be out of style and found at your local goodwill/charity.
Quality says volumes about you. If you carry a cheap bag, it looks cheap, and so do you. If you wear a cheap pair of shoes, not only are they uncomfortable but don't last long, and it shows and reflects poorly on you, and your lack of taste and culture.
Our consumer driven culture where more is seen as better, when in actuality its more junk.
A wealthy, sophisticated person purchases select, high quality items. When you walk in their homes, its not jammed with bric a brack but handmade objects of art which reflect the owners tastes, and is an investment both in the beauty of their home, in the artist who made it, and gives their heirs art worth inheriting.
Less junk, more quality is where our society needs to be encouraged to go.
I disagree with the last part. If the idiot masses started to think that way, it'd be more difficult for the cultured ones
welp..guess I'll spend my salary on a bag worth 1200$ otherwise the people at work will think I'm cheap
Yeah... you're not wealthy with that attitude. Sounds like you put too much thought into how people perceive you and acquiring status symbols, which you will not take with you when you die. You sound like the type of person to buy a range rover on your 50k salary to look cool.
Ever heard of Dave Ramsey or minority mindset? You should really look some of there stuff. Why do you wanna spend so much just to show others that you're living a comfortable life?
You sound like one of those guy who just bearly gets a taste of money and then suddenly thinks they are above all

Yeah, the level of craftsmanship for this is easily worth 1,200 - I thought it'd be double that.
Yay artists, handmade is more expensive but the quality of the work, the patience, the eye, expertise and craftsmanship are the investment for value. I make too, sometimes creating, making things right and finishing are as much a reward as money. Having pride in a job well done is a personal value people who are not makers admire and respect.

The way the clip is shot makes it seem like an epic journey, for many it is daily life.
Mass production has its merits in getting cost down and availability for many, how many people who use bags in daily life will end up owning such a bag. Mass production also looks at options that small operations cannot sustain.
Why does it have to be one or the other? They both satisfy different kind of needs.

I am sure that it was made in China.
I have no doubt that these bags are worth it. In fact, I'd say they're a bargain compared to high end name brands. But creating unique products by hand is really only accessible for those who can afford it and it doesn't represent what the core of our economy is.
Having said that, there are a huge number of niche companies like this and they all have their place. It's really good to see this kind of quality and craftsmanship in America.

Looking at the comments ig not everyone likes the hand made stuff at that price. It's an older technique but its cheaper than louis or gucci. It's a luxary bag of course it's not attainable for some. I would feel happy to know I have true craftsmanship than just buying the brand. It's not for the 1% it's for some of the 99% that cares about quality and can afford something really nice and non essential once every year or so like that.
Matty you are typing for practice. 99% of people would rather not buy overpriced item 1200 US the majority of of the 99% can't shell out that much dough for just a bag. its a month of rent if not two.
Lechiffresix six A majority of people can afford it, people buy so many bags over their lifetime, some buy new bags every one or two seasons, this though a high upfront cost will last you so long you won’t need to buy another bag for a long time, in the long terms it’s a cheap bag.
Its much better than Gucci. Gucci is mass produced with little actual craftsmanship.
I love buying handmade, what gets to me is when people complain about the price of Handmade/Locally Made/Made in America products and they then complain when stores like Walmart close that sell Made in China products. If we as a society bought only Hand Made, Locally Made, or Made in America products our cities/towns economies would be more stable and the money would stay in the communities.
